HARPER

I had to destroy the boy I loved. I ended up destroying myself.
But no well-intended deed ever goes unpunished.
I thought I could set him free by letting him go. Until a tragedy sends me racing to Gabriel Blake- the boy I was once forced to betray.
But his anger and its smoldering embers haven't yet subsided enough for him to listen to me. Instead of running from his fire, I find myself with a need to feel It, desperate to be burned. Because I deserve to pay for what I did.

GABRIEL

Harper Grimes almost broke me once.
I'd been so sure we would withstand anything, I'd been wrong.
When destiny pushes us together again, all my hatred for her resurfaces.
But anger, contempt, and raw desire are a dangerous combination.
Flames ignite and burn, and I can't resist the heat.
We're no longer the same boy and girl.
We're unrecognizable to each other now, but there's still something powerful between us.

When danger threatens us both, can our once-pure love destroy a present evil? Or will it bury us beneath its weight for good?

Anise Storm knows how to write the steamiest romance books while keeping you on the edge of your seat. She is one author that I don’t have to think twice, or read any blurbs, about. I know that if I pick up one of her books, I’m going to have a good time. Deceptively Yours was no different. There is a lot of spicy scenes here, but there is no shortage of plot! Harper’s whole life has changed in an instant, but she is determined to save the love of her life from what she believes is a murderous plot by her own family. Gabriel can’t believe Harper has the audacity to show her face here again, but he knows she’s the only one he’s ever loved. This story has so many twists and turns, it left my head spinning. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and cannot wait to read the rest of the series!

Anise Storm did it again. This story is epitome of childhood sweethearts, miss communication gone wrong. Gabe and Harper are such a cute couple. I loved them together. And what they had to go through is so heartbreaking. The plot was amazing. The idea of the other Titans make me giddy for the wait. I can't wait to read more from her.

Another win in the world of the Titans, this time with book 1! I was so excited to read this. Not my first and a million percent not my last read of Ms. Storms. The prose is fantastic, the passion and anger are as red hot as ever, the decisions the characters make in their lives and how they effect the others are as angsty and grief filled and loving and electric as ever.

Gabriel and Harper are children of the Titans. As teenagers they've been insulated for a lot of their lives, but they have also had a lifetime to feel the magnetism and special relationship possible amongst one another. Their first kiss was at age 7 and it began to cement just how much they belonged to one another forever. Gabriel was a hot shot athlete who was waiting to make the call on where he wanted to attend college, but all that mattered to him was being where Harper was. They had their entire lives mapped out, full of hope and excitement for the future and the steps they'd be taking together as they entered adulthood...until tragedy happened and Harper was whisked away across the country with barely enough time for whispered promises between them.

Just like that, they were separated and feeling lost except for the tethers that bind them together. They were so sure nothing would ever come between them for long, but Harper is forced to endure another trauma and horror, and her shame and guilt lead to a lie in order to protect Gabriel and it begins a decade of anguish, bitterness, hatred and shame. She begins to try to reach out to Gabriel, but the only burning emotions he feels is hatred and anger for her and he denies her requests. They end up being brought together unexpectedly, and Harper takes advantage of her opportunity to get his attention, even if it only brings more pain by causing him to lash out at someone he thought he once knew. Whatever it takes to get him to take notice and listen to her...she's willing to take the heat. Her guilt and shame for lying to Gabriel has hung over her for her entire adult life.

Gabriel has never lost his passionate heat towards Harper, but it morphed from love to hate with Harper's decision ten years ago. He wants to burn her with his disgust, but it isn't the only thing still burning after all these years...they are both adults now, with many life experiences and choices behind them and have become different than the young adults that were so sure love could conquer all. He wants her to feel his disgust for her, to make her feel the pain of his heartbreak as starkly as he does. Will he ever give her a chance to say what she's been trying to tell him all this time? Will their passion and magnetism burn as brightly as it always has, or will the flames of betrayal outburn them?

Another absolute win, there are some traumatic experiences in this book as a warning.

This book was a decent read. The plot lines were very captivating and kept me on the edge of my seat. Harper’s trauma with George, Jayson, and the loss of her parents, as well as the overarching issues of her inheritance and the murder mystery were super interesting and heartbreaking at the same time. I felt so bad for Harper and I thought she was resilient despite her luck. I really liked her character and I was crushed how she blamed everything on herself.

Gabriel, however, I did not enjoy. I’m all for a grumpy mc, but I thought he was just angry and vengeful. He has every reason to be hurt and upset with what happened, but to keep interrupting and cutting off Harper, refusing to listen and talk to her, only caring about punishing sex, and then having to nerve to nullify and dismiss her fears, EVEN AFTER WHAT HAPPENED WITH JAYSON, baffled me. It made me so angry and I could not bring myself to like his character which kind of ruined the story for me. I felt no connection on his side of the relationship and thought Harper deserved better. I love the childhood lovers trope but the miscommunication as well as the MMC didn’t do it for me.

    * Received as an ARC but all thoughts are my own.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to LOVE this book so much more than I did...

Deceptively Yours is the first book in the Titans of Chicago series by Anise Storm. This is the start of a new spin-off series (from Titans of Manhattan), this time set in Chicago. I have loved reading the Titans of Manhattan, so it was a given that I would be diving into this book as soon as it released.
This is a bit of a darker romantic suspense with trigger warnings for violence, SA, and more- so keep that in mind before diving in.
The story is a second chance romance with forced proximity, painful past history, hurt, tension, chemistry, sparks, sizzle, emotion, lies, secrets, angst, drama, tension, intrigue, action, flashbacks, and is told from a duel (alternating) POV.
There were parts of the story which were heart-wrenching at times, where I really felt for the character/s. And as I mentioned above, some of the subject-matter could be considered triggers for some readers - so be warned. This is not a light and fluffy read. Our FMC especially, has been through the wringer.
Though, I have to be honest here, I have really struggled with my thoughts on this book and how to put them into my review. As I have mentioned, I have read most of Ms. Storm’s books now and have enjoyed my reading journey with her. But I really struggled reading this book for numerous reasons, one of which was that it felt like it was (almost) written by a completely different author, and not up to Ms. Storm’s usual ‘polish’ (so sorry, Ms. Storm).
Let me try and explain. First of all, our MC’s are only 26 and so much has happened to them over the years- as they have gone from childhood friends to teen sweethearts, to then being ripped apart by harrowing circumstances at the age of sixteen. So, I really feel that these two needed to be slightly older now (perhaps 29/30) to really ‘fit’ the storyline/circumstances/life better. But, in saying that, there was a lot of dialogue/inner thoughts which ‘sounded’ much older and more ‘formal’- especially when we were reading from a sixteen-year-olds perspective. There were times that the dialogue just didn’t feel realistic for the situation or characters circumstances/ages, which pulled me out of the story and disrupted the ‘flow’. Then there was repeated information, in the form of inner thoughts/dialogue which was frustrating having to ‘hear’ something we already knew, repeatedly. After a while it just seemed like manufactured angst/drama. Then there was the use of wrong terms (from my perspective) which pulled me out of the story and had me re-reading to confirm what I just read. Which again, is my own perspective/‘issues’ with this book- as others might not even notice or care. There were also terms, sentences/dialogue that seemed quite ‘clunky/bumpy/unneeded/confusing, which made for a choppy feel, and again, pulled me out of the story. And the tenses of the story were in conflict at times, too. I feel that most of these issues could have been caught during the beta read/editing process and would have made the story so much more polished — made it flow/feel so much better (but again, this is just my personal opinion).
Then there were the characters – who frustrated me to death with their miscommunications/misunderstandings/manufacturing angst and drama- I went from really feeling for them to wanting to knock their heads together, and that made it hard for me to fully connect with them and invest in their story. I am not trying to sound ‘nit-picking’ here, just trying to convey how I feel, and why this just didn’t connect with me the way I had hoped……
But having loved Ms. Storm’s other works, I am looking forward to seeing what comes next.
    Happy reading!

    Thank you, Anise Storm!
