Lieutenant Trufant (The Bloodline Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 78 ratings

Lieutenant Marcus Trufant sits alone in his apartment waiting for his phone to ring, and praying it won't. It's April, 11th and just like the April before, he knows a United States veteran will be slaughtered in the next several hours. Each year a veteran is killed on April 11th, and another on December 1st. The first two occurred in Chicago, but the last four have been on his streets.

The killer leaves no clues and no trace evidence, but after each homicide a cryptic letter arrives. A hand written quote from Shakespeare, always with a hint of revenge, but revenge for what?

The case has already ruined his marriage and it is slowly destroying Trufant as well. Only catching this killer will save him, and losing is not an option.

Jeff Shaw's fascinating first novel pits the seasoned detective against a methodical serial killer that leaves nothing but dead men in his wake.

A book you wont want to put down.
Jeff Shaw's "Lt. Trufaunt" is a breathtaking thriller that expertly combines elements of crime, psychological tension, and moral ambiguity, creating a gripping narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Shaw introduces us to Lieutenant Marcus Trufaunt, a seasoned officer grappling with the darker aspects of law enforcement while contending with his own haunted past. The novel opens with a mysterious murder that sets the tone for a complex web of intrigue and suspense. Trufaunt, determined and deeply flawed, is tasked with unraveling the truth behind this crime but quickly discovers that nothing is as it seems. Jeff Shaw's writing is both sharp and evocative, pulling readers into a gritty world where the line between right and wrong blurs, and trust becomes a luxury. I’m excited to start Leann and the clean man. I’ll post a review for it later! Stay tuned.

This book was a truly enjoyable read for me. After meeting the author at a small town festival and purchasing the book from a local authors booth, I felt fortunate to have discovered his work. The writing style and subject matter were exactly what I appreciate in a book. Fans of Michael Connelly, Karin Slaughter, and David Baldacci may enjoy this series for its similar blend of style and substance.

A great page turner. Not my usual genre but a fiend suggested it. Fast moving and not to wordy. Mr Shaw describes characters and locations perfectly making you able to “see” the fog. It’s a crime novel and bad things happen. But, unlike other crime authors he describes scenes so well he does need to get graphic. But you get his vision with out gory details. Hoping for another chapter. This would be a great movie like Reacher.

Jeff Shaw has a knack for creating interesting three-dimensional characters and making the reader sympathize with and relate to these characters on a deep level. More than a crime story—also an eye opening look at combat and war PTSD. The story moves at a roller coaster pace with plenty of intrigue and suspense, and a satisfying conclusion. I definitely recommend this one!

It's always a trial for me to get into reading crime thrillers, although there's exceptions (Jeffrey Deaver being a particular favorite).

However, what's so compelling about LIEUTENANT TRUFANT is that it's far more an esemble piece than just focusing on one detective. Trufant, while a good character, isn't so much a standout to other police and detective figures. I surprisingly found myself far more engaged with Armstrong, a former veteran homeless and drug-addicted and it's exceptional Shaw grants so much sympathy to this character and his journey.

Most of these characters are right on the line between being sympathetic and problematic (no Black nor White, but all "Grey souls"). But it's also the suspense where Shaw's previous career in Law Enforcement really blurs the line to what we've accustomed to seeing Law Enforcement in both literature and cinema, and makes it feel all the more real, but no less dramatic, terrifying, yet we feel we've met all these people before just walking down the street.

LIEUTENANT TRUFANT stands out as a "great start". I read this a few months ago, and while I can't quite remember certain moments of the plot, I remember the characters and sometimes, those are the things that'll always keep me coming back. That's what all the "Great Reads" aspire to.
