- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2025The sequel to The Woman I Befriended gave off a different aura than the original, as former journalist turned private investigator Ellie is no longer snooping around trying to determine if her neighbor is a serial killer. Now she is snooping around trying to find the serial killer who has now targeted her because she thwarted her plans and forced her to go on the run. The majority of the book centers on the cat-and-mouse game between the killer (Tiffany) and Ellie who refuses to tell the police that she has been receiving threatening text messages. This is the kind of behavior we’ve come to expect from Ellie, which is one thing I enjoyed about this book. When you can write a sequel and keep your characters’ personalities and quirks, you have a well-written story. Add in Ellie’s husband as a target of the killer, and the intensity level rises that much more. Unlike the first book in the series, this sequel is more psychological in nature as opposed to being a straight up whodunit mystery. We know the killer’s identity, so there is likely not going to be a major twist or reveal this time around. I did hope to see more action, as we mostly get Ellie trying to catch Tiffany while Tiffany easily evades her (and is almost toying with her). The ending was exciting, although the book does end a little abruptly. Not to give any spoilers, but it is left open for a third part, should the author want to return one more time.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2024After reading the first book, The Woman I Befriended, I had to read The Woman I Want Dead. The sequel was much faster-paced and a lot more entertaining. It brought out Ellie as a determined character bent on catching her nemesis—and on her nemesis trying to catch her. I also loved how supportive her husband, Noah, was. It was refreshing to read about a solid relationship instead of one spouse cheating or being ready to kill the other (cough, cough, because I'm writing one of those right now). I definitely recommend reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024When I reviewed this book's predecessor last year, I had some thoughts about the character development, especially for the protagonist, Ellie. Although the overall plot was fascinating to me, I found it hard to get attached to the characters involved. Ultimately, it was a 6/10 for me.
This one, on the other hand, absolutely shines with the character growth for all those involved. You can see how the events of the last book have affected the way Ellie carries herself through all these little details. She has much more of a personality at this point, and you can actually get invested when she encounters danger in this story.
*LIGHT SPOILER HERE*
A cool addition in this one is that you actually see a mysterious POV from the killer in question every now and then. It really helps to drive the plot forward, and you get a little more knowledge on how they came to do what they do.
**END OF LIGHT SPOILER*
In the interest of keeping it honest, I do feel like the narration was a bit clunky at times. Not to the point where I enjoyed the plot less, but still noticeably so. The only other complaint I have is about a plot thread that comes up halfway through the book that seemingly goes unresolved.
Overall, I had a great time with this book and it was more than worth the collective 5 hours it took me to finish (I'm a painfully slow reader).
Keep up the good work Sara! Looking forward to next time
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2024full disclosure I was an ARC reader. However! This was such a good book, I was a little worried because a sequel can be hit or miss but this definitely knocked it out of the water! It drew me in from the first page and kept me hooked! So many twists and turns and a wonderful ending! Definitely will be picking it up again 10/10
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024I absolutely loved The Woman I Befriended and hoped for a sequel. So, as you can imagine, I was excited when Sara Kate announced this book! I eagerly looked forward to getting my hands on it, and it did not disappoint. I loved the short chapters and the quick pace. The storyline was enjoyable, and I was excited to see how everything played out. I appreciated the well-thought-out ending and wouldn’t mind if the series continued. I would definitely keep reading if there were more books in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2024The Woman I Want Dead is Sara Kate's sequel to The Woman I Befriended. Book one ended in a way that totally allowed a sequel, and I was overjoyed to learn about the new book.
It was great returning to the characters from the first book years later. It has been years since Ellie unmasked a local serial killer, and now the cat and mouse starts again! This dual POV between Ellie and Tiffany keeps you engaged and flipping those pages. The story is fast-paced while still keeping your attention. I enjoyed the development and plot. I enjoyed the creepy text messages!
I enjoyed Ellie’s character more than I did in the first book, and I was happy to see that she was still relentless and tossed caution to the wind. I would recommend reading The Woman I Befriended first before reading this one, but it’s not completely necessary.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2024After reading the first book I had very high expectations for this sequel and boy did it surpass what I imagined.
Absolutely loved the storyline, characters and overall really great read highly recommend.
I usually wouldn't read a lot of mystery and thrilling type reads but after finding this author I fell in love with reading her work.
The short and quick read of the chapters make you want to keep reading, so it's hard to put down.
That ending though.... ahhh perfection.
I honestly liked this book better than the first one.
