Cloudburst County: Secrets of Souls River - Book 2 Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

When romance and crime cross paths in a small town, dark secrets come to light and people's lives are suddenly and ruthlessly rearranged. It was no different with Rena Bjorkline and the generations that followed her.

In 1936, Rena witnessed Beulah Marsoni stroll into bachelor John's life and claim his as her own. When Beulah willingly shared excruciating secrets of romance and suspense, Rena found herself at the intersection of solid faith and heart-breaking fear. She could handle hard farm work, family tragedy, and the devastating poverty of the Great Depression, but this dreadful news was the final straw. It was time to run.

A generation later, Buckthorn Bluff's dream couple, beautiful waitress Lucinda Rae and charming champion Benny Lee were harboring their own secrets. No one must know the hidden trauma and evil forces of their lives.

They were locked in prisons of shame and fear, and their happy veneer didn't fool anyone. Sooner or later, something had to be done to escape this terrifying existence.

Family and friends sensed Lucinda Rae's life was in turmoil, and they had to act before it was too late. Would their simple efforts make any difference in her tumultuous life?

Teresa E Nelson's first book, Tender Mercies for Tough Moments: A 31 Day Journey into the Blessings of God was released in 2017. With a degree in communications and a desire to help people in difficult circumstances, she has served her community as a high school and community adult teacher, a social service case manager, a nonprofit leader, a grant writer, and a benefit auctioneer.

No stranger herself to poverty and cancer, Teresa led her community in a faith based mission to help people with various needs, and also founded a support outreach for people living with the uncertainty and struggles of cancer. In 2003, Teresa received the Nonprofit of the Year Award for leading a regional care-giving organization to quality high service impact.

Teresa E. Nelson is currently the pastor of a small rural church where Scripture is taught and people are loved. She is inspired as she teaches Bible classes at the local corrections facility and in her community, and also as she preaches Sunday messages online. Her passion is for all people to enjoy a thriving, purposeful, and eternal relationship with God.

Her childhood days were spent on a farm where she observed the ways of farmers, animals, nature, and God. It was a special delight for Teresa to listen to the visitors who sat at her adoptive mother’s kitchen table, drank coffee, and shared their own unique stories. These times combined with experiences of her adult life was the background needed for the February 2021 release of her novel, "Whisper County".

She and her husband now share their lifetime of stories with their four wonderful adult children and their exceptional spouses, and nine precious grandchildren. Living in rural central Minnesota, they enjoy the wildlife roaming the fields, fishing, hunting, and of course, drinking coffee with their friends and neighbors at their own kitchen table.

Cloudburst Country is a quick read novel that combines the sacrifices endured by parents during WW I and then grandparents during WWII, a mother fighting the system to provide for her newborn, and the cruelty of a race car driver that blames others for any and all misfortunes. At the same time, Teresa weaves in her experience as a pastor, to provide hope that indeed good will eventually overcome adversity. The novel is a must read, I’m anxiously awaiting her next book.

"I have received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author and am not being compensated for this review." In reading this book without being privy to the prequel I was instantly drawn into the story and the characters. I felt like John and Rena were interesting from the start and you could easily understand where they were coming from. Also I like the timepiece as it takes back in time and the jumps are easy to figure out. I also liked the aspect of faith and family, and knowing who is there for you and who isn't. I highly recommend this book.

I have received an advanced copy of this book by the author and have not been compensated for this review. I love books that when you start reading them, you hate to put them down. The kind of book that stays in your head til you pick it up again. Cloudburst County is that kind of book. The characters are believable and you find yourself drawn in emotionally; feeling happy for them when they find joy, or concern when they are in danger. A good book does that. I'm an 'old soul' therefore love the setting during the depression. I, also, love the way the author weaves faith throughout the book in a such a natural way that it reminds the reader faith can be that strength in their life as well. If you love Christian novels mixed with joy, sadness, love, and suspense, then Cloudburst County is for you!

    From Nancy Ashton:
"I have received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author and am not being compensated for this review."
Teresa has done it again. Story details flood me with memories of my rural hometown experiences, a story that kept my attention through the twists and turns, but best of all fabulous characters. The subjects of infertility, adoption and domestic violence added believable social concerns to the story and expressed real life scenes and well thought out solutions. It is obvious that this dearly beloved author has been in the trenches offering social awareness and providing loving care of the emotional needs these difficult subjects require. The well -developed characters are the kind of people you hope to share a table, for coffee and donuts or Thanksgiving dinner. Teresa is a true storyteller. So happy for Cloudburst County, a second story and prequel and now to learn a third is also on the way. I can’t wait. Nancy Ashton

As I delved into the pages of Cloudburst County, I found myself deeply immersed in the characters' lives. Their stories of love and the trials they face are captivating. Each character is richly developed, drawing me into their personal struggles and triumphs. Watching them work together to overcome their challenges made me feel like a part of their journey, experiencing their joys and heartaches right alongside them. The depth of their relationships and the resilience they show in the face of adversity kept me turning the pages, eager to see how their intertwined destinies would unfold. I'm looking forward to Teresa's next novel, eager to see how she continues to weave such compelling stories and unforgettable characters.

Such an intriging idea; a prequel that reveals past events and insights about characters, relationships and situations that already grabbed my mind and heart in Whisper County, the first book in the series. I found myself experiencing a myriad of emotions as I was caught up in the unexpected twists and turns of the storyline. The author has an incredible way of bringing characters to life so that I felt like I really knew them. Cloudburst County has it all...history, crime, romance, misunderstanding, expectation, disappointment, wholesome values, soul searching, joy and mystery!

Teresa E. Nelson has a unique way to immerse the reader into a past time, a time when rural America was younger, perhaps slower, and times may have been harder, but Love prevails through it all. Follow Cindy through all the Love she experiences. Good & Bad. Temporary and Forever. I must read for any young person as they perhaps are the most vulnerable. Beautiful segway into Cindy's adult life in Cloudburst County.

I have received an advance copy from the author and am not being compensated for this review. The story goes back generations and the struggles they went through. Growing up on a farm and also hearing my grandparents talk about the tough times brought me back to their strength and resiliency they endured. I couldn't stop reading each chapter had another set of twists and turns. Excellent characters with faith being their stronghold throughout the generations. Teresa is an excellent story teller and look forward to her next book.

A riveting story with well developed characters underpinned by the gospel message that Jesus offers new and eternal life to those who believe in Him. Such a great plotline exploring John and Rena's story and then Lucinda Rae and Benny Lee's and the contrast of living a godly life with the shallowness of one devoid of His guidance. My heart was in my mouth on more than one occasion. This author really knows how to write! A worthy sequel to Whisper County. I'm really looking forward to the next instalment in the series. Highly recommended to those who like a clean and fast paced read.
