Love and Protest Kindle Edition
THE IDEAL NOVEL FOR A BOOK CLUB
While wandering through the Second Chance Thrift Shop, 17-year-old Harper Warner comes across a diary tucked in a nightstand drawer. The original owner, Libby Carlson, had chronicled her “Summer of Love” in San Francisco and her involvement in the Anti-Vietnam War Movement 52 years earlier.
Harper is certain her recently deceased mother arranged this discovery, and she gives the find special import. The diary entries help Harper cope with her loss and motivate her to become involved in something larger than herself.
After deciding her cause would be the Black Lives Matter movement, COVID-19 unexpectedly upends her plans. Her media-fueled fears and obsession with the growing death count drive her into isolation, until the George Floyd murder. Separated by generations, Harper and Liberty’s heartbreaks and missteps are intertwined as they come of age and find their individual paths toward activism.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Nancy Klann-Moren's LOVE AND PROTEST is the heartfelt story of young love blooming amidst the tragedies and triumphs of the Vietnam Anti-war Movement, juxtaposed against a heartbreaking coming-of-age tale that unfolds in a more recent, far more contentious time and place; where ignorance and idealism, brutality and naivete collide with consequences both gratifying and touching. This is a work of great depth and honesty, and one that is certain to stir readers."
---Baron Birtcher, LA Times Bestseller, and award-winning author of Knife River
"Libby Carlson comes of age during the 1960's anti-war movement. Fast forward to 2020 and Harper Warner finds purpose in the Black Lives Matter movement. Nancy Klann-Moren's new novel follows the two young women and their serendipitous connection, while it parallels social justice issues from two different eras. Beautifully descriptive and thoughtfully told, Love and Protest is a timely read."

About the author

Nancy Klann-Moren, Author and Artist.
I tried my hand at writing short fiction while traveling for work in advertising and marketing as a creative outlet on long plane rides. That led to me signing up for writing classes, writer's conferences, and local workshops. My goal was to create unique stories told in a distinctive voice. I'm happy to say some of the stories have garnered awards and publication in anthologies. Eleven of them are published in my collection of short stories, "Like The Flies On The Patio."
Short stories were my primary genre until one morning, while in a workshop at a conference, I read an excerpt of one. The instructor asked what I was doing for the next couple of years, because, "What you have written isn't a short story, it's a novel." After a good deal of foot-dragging I gave it a try, and penned my first novel, "The Clock Of Life," a thought-provoking, award-winning coming-of-age story of friendship and struggle at a time in our history when American protests changed the status quo. The novel has garnered awards from Writers Digest, Next Generation Indie Book Awards, Readers Favorite Book Awards, and Kindle Book Awards. It's a BRAG Honoree and an Awesome Indies AIA Recipient.
After finding a diary in a thrift store, I saw it as a good vehicle for the story in my newest novel, "Love and Protest." This is also a coming-of-age story about two young women's paths toward their future as social activists. Over fifty years separate their journeys.
For many years, I attended the Santa Barbara Writers Conference as a student. I am now honored to have graduated from student to teacher, leading a week-long workshop.
I live in Southern California with my husband, Richard, a retired architect who now creates ceramic art. I have two grown sons, both rock stars in their fields, unlike my two cats who don't give a damn about anything.
Favorite Writing Tip: Elmore Leonard's brilliant "Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip." AKA, leave out the boring parts.
Favorite Authors: Pat Conroy, T.C. Boyle, Ray Bradbury, Flannery O'Connor, Susan Cisneros, Barbara Kingsolver.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2024I continue to see more and more independent authors produce top quality books. Nancy Klan-Moren is one to watch. She artfully weaves two narratives ultimately bringing the threads together in a satisfying way. Nancy's writing is well-crafted and engaging. I loved the story and enjoyed the references to music and events I, too, experienced in my lifetime. A solid homage to the Viet Nam war protests and Black lives matter movement.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024Nancy Klann-Moran's novel Love and Protest is a nostalgic and thoughtful treat. Political protest across the generations is the vehicle but the twin protagonists of Harper and Liberty are the stories. And the two stories are compelling.
Harper departs Minnesota after her mother's death and ends up in 1960's San Francisco during the Summer of Love, Viet Nam era. While the author's presentation of those times might seem overly idealistic, it is the way those times were. As someone who was in college at the time, I found myself drawn to Harper and the sincerity of the war protest movement she became part of.
Harper's connection to Liberty and the Black Lives Matter is intriguing. I will not spoil it here.
What we are left with is an appreciation of the enduring grass-roots tradition of American public protest as a means of political change. What makes this book worth special attention, however, is the tale of the two main characters and the way their connection over fifty years is revealed.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2024Love and Protest by Nancy Klann is an interesting look back in time for those of us who lived through the Vietnam era and educational for those who did not. And to make the plot more complex, it also draws on the Black Lives Matter movement to contrast and compare these two points in time and how involvement changed people’s perceptions, attitudes, and willingness to get involved.
The characters are well developed. The coincidences and bits of luck that drive the plot are realistic and believable. As readers, we relate to their life circumstances and the personal decisions and choices that are influenced by these circumstances. I recommend this book to those who enjoy historical and coming-of-age fiction, stories of women who overcome, and tales of those who take a risk to fight injustice. - Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2024I loved this book! I am recommending it to others. I am a huge fan of historical fiction and a compelling storyline. I enjoyed reading about the lives of 2 characters in different time periods who led admirable, fearless lives by becoming strong advocates for worthy causes. The ending was a surprise twist that I never saw coming, I was pleasantly surprised! I felt like the girls and events in both time periods were relatable and close to my heart. I struggled to put the book down, the story was so good. This is an ideal book club choice, a lot of subject matter, topics, and events to discuss. This was a wise purchase, I will highly recommend it to others who enjoy reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2024Nancy Klann-Moren has a gift. A gift for taking her readers on a trip between two eras with a common thread. Her well-developed characters find themselves in similar circumstances yet growing up in different times. Liberty finds meaning in her life by becoming part of the anti-war movement of the sixties while Harper finds herself equally as inspired by the Black Lives Matter protests of recent years. The clever intermingling of their two stories is what makes this book such a great read. The other characters they meet amid their journeys add further significance to the eras as well as some spice! The dialogue feels real. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever been inspired by love and/or passion to make a difference.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2024The author thrusts the reader imediately into two significant moments in our history: the Vietnam war and Black Lives Matter. Her ingenious way of connecting these two separate times makes fascinating reading. When a young woman finds a diary in a thrift shop, its contents dramatically affect her own life. Both young women became active in the two separate movemetns and the author makes the marches and rallies painfully clear. You are there! The ending will both surpirse and delight you.
