- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2014Ms. Slaughter did a very nice job presenting an intriguing young adult novel. For those who've always wanted to see the young dance world from the inside, WHILE I DANCED hits the mark.
That Ms. Slaughter understands the difficult life of dance is very clear as she also presents a very real and believable protagonist in Cass.
The mystery of Cass' mother; the trials of waning friendship and betrayal; the pursuit of Cass' dance career; and a chance for new love all contribute to a compelling, hard to put down novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2013In While I Danced, Slaughter captures the tender, painful feelings of being betrayed. As a teen, Cass reveals that hopeful, fervent optimism of youth while dealing with the difficult reality of people letting you down. Instead of being another story about a teen who falls in love and becomes the prima ballerina all in fell swoop, this narrative leads the reader on a journey of discovery about the realities of real life and the pain of loving others. I enjoyed every minute of it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2014Excellent book for dancers and non alike. It's one of those captivating books that begin from page one. I just didn't want to put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2017WHILE I DANCED by debut author Lynn Slaughter is as sure footed as the ballet dancers in this YA novel. Heroine Cassandra Smith is an extremely driven teen when it comes to her art. It is her social life and family life that tear her apart through the story. Must admit that when I was a teen I would not have picked this title from a shelf as I’ve always been drawn to far more action and adventure and would not have connected with someone still in high school being a workaholic regarding anything, nor have already chosen a career field. WHILE I DANCED will definitely appeal to an audience of girls who have spent years in dance class and are facing the decision on whether to continue or not, as one of Cass’s friends does. In many ways, Cass is unknowingly dealing with the same choices her mother faced – will she let history repeat itself or rise above the mistakes of the past?
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2020Teen Cass is a dancer with ambition, though she 'in her head' criticizes herself for her shortcomings--her height, her lack of technique in dancing. Having been a dancer myself, I completely related to her feelings. Feeling betrayed in high school by her best friend and boyfriend, who form a relationship, devastates her. How can she trust people in her life? The same with her father who is not at all forthcoming about information on her deceased mother, again, how can she trust that what he's saying (or not saying) is true? Ms. Slaughter portrayed all characters, especially Cass, vividly, strongly, and what I know a teen goes through in life. The ending was bittersweet and true to life also. I admit I don't read many young adult books, but While I Danced is not meant just for young adults, but for any adult, and one of the best books I've read in a long while. Kudos to Ms. Slaughter for her talent, knowing her story and making her readers love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2017Lynn Slaughter brings to life the dedication and determination needed to become good at anything. Her field is ballet and against that backdrop she guides us through events in a girl’s life that help her grow into a woman by teaching her what is important. Ms. Slaughter also shows us how important family is in our lives as we grow and as we mature. I loved seeing the different ways in which people handle the hurt and anger of losing loved ones. In the end there is healing.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2013This book invites you in immediately, and keeps your interest throughout the different layers of the plot. After I started the book, I couldn't wait to get back to the story to find out what was going to happen to Cass and her friends and family. I also enjoyed the peek into the world of dance. I have a dance background, and I think that Ms. Slaughter nailed it with her descriptions of auditions, teachers, the life of a young dancer, and the emotional ups and downs of trying to make it in that world. I cared about the characters, and enjoyed the fast pace of the story. "While I Danced" is beautifully written, uplifting, and manages to tap into a huge range of human emotions as the story unfolds.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2013While I Danced is not in any of the genres I read, except YA. I was unsure why I picked it up. It is so well written, however, that I will be reading it over again.
While I Danced was, for me, a feast of the senses. Lynn writes with knowledge of dance so deep that characters come alive. I could smell the studios, flowers, and traffic. I could almost taste the granola bars and sandwiches, see the dance, and hear the music. Most especially, I could feel the muscles slide against each other as the dance movements flowed across the studio and the stage. The emotions seemed real, and the characters grew throughout the book.
