From the Inside Flap
"Gather round, please. My name is Lucia Cruz and I'm the resort manager at Paradise Island. To save time, you were already checked in by the airline staff on the way here. If you'll all follow me, we'll get you settled into your assigned cabins so you can have a few hours to wind down before dinner is served."
Jess froze. The voice was low and feminine but embodied so much more. It was like dark chocolate, kittens, and pure distilled sex. The timber of it hit Jess simultaneously in the animal part of her brain and someplace much lower. She was afraid to turn toward the speaker because she'd surely never look away again.
But she did turn. The view before her perfectly matched the voice in her head. Tall, dark, and lean, Lucia Cruz was dangerous in an unattainable, hot girl, kind of way. Androgenous with dark hair and long eyelashes framing even darker eyes, Jess struggled to pin an age on her. Lucia had the full lips and high cheekbones that most women would kill for. The resort manager was everything Ruby Rose's aesthetic promised but could never deliver. Times ten.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024What a beautiful story! At first, I had a hard time with how angry Jess was. The author did a great job leading the reader to understand why Jess was hurting and had walls built up to protect herself. I enjoyed watching Jess transform into loving herself, loving life and loving the many wonderful things life has to offer. While reading the book, I was looking for a twist and the author took it to a place that I was not expecting. I loved how the author explored unexplained phenomenons from our world and universe. I also enjoyed how K. Aten brought in other characters from additional books they have written. Now, I am going to re-read “The Last Scion of Ra” - another book by K. Aten who is by far my favorite author!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2024In a world where the pressures of daily life can come at one hard and sometimes out of nowhere, the temptation of escaping to a tropical paradise for some much needed self-care is more than alluring. Paradise Lost and Found by K. Aten captures the essence of this idea perfectly. The story invites readers to embark on the journey of Jess Parker, a woman that’s had a few too many hard knocks, causing her to develop a bit of a chip on her shoulder. At first glance, Jess’s story may appear to be headed toward a typical “grumpy/sunshine” romance, but there’s so much more that lies beneath the surface with this one. It is a rich exploration of emotional healing and personal growth. Most importantly though, it is a story about the complexities of love and the power it has to heal one’s very soul.
Jess’s character arc serves as a compelling foundation for Aten’s narrative. Entering middle age with a heart hardened by past disappointments, Jess embodies the struggles many face as they navigate the unexpected hardships of life. Considering the circumstances, her bitterness and resentment are certainly understandable, and this makes her journey toward self-improvement all the more engaging. Though they may not like her at first, readers easily have compassion for her. It’s an interesting dichotomy, for sure, but it’s her vulnerability that really hooks readers. They can easily see there is about to be much change for her at Paradise Island Resort, and they buckle in for the ride.
Aten is a clever and intuitive writer. She pens Jess’s transformation with a deliberate and steady pace, keeping things very interesting. Readers witness Jess’s internal struggles—from moments of self-doubt to self-reflection—as her icy exterior begins to thaw and change into something quite endearing. Each interaction with others serves as a stepping stone for Jess to grow and change; the gradual evolution allows readers to empathize with her plight. Most significant of these interactions, however, is those involving Lucia Cruz, the resort manager. Jess’s relationship with Lucia is pivotal to the narrative, igniting reflection and change within her. Through Lucia, Jess begins to understand the magnitude of human connection and kindness, particularly as it relates to the healing process and love. Aten shows a real strength here when dealing with these tough emotions, and it makes for good reading.
The integration of Lucia into the storytelling gives Paradise Lost and Found an appreciable complexity that draws readers deep into the narrative. Just like Jess, she too is a rich, multifaceted character with a backstory filled with struggles and triumphs. There’s an intrigue there though, and it provides the story with an unexpected dimension. Nonetheless, her strength and kindness are just what Jess needs, and it easily lends itself to romance. Her presence, however, not only serves as a love interest for Jess but a conduit for transformation. Lucia’s warmth and understanding provide the much needed gentle nudge for Jess to confront her feelings and fears. The chemistry that ultimately develops between the two women is almost palpable, creating an engaging tension that captivates readers. Love, in the case of this romance, becomes a force that propels Jess toward self-actualization and healing, two prominent themes that push the characters towards a unique HEA.
Final remarks…
The romance between Jess and Lucia is not just captivating, it is integral to Jess’s transformation, making it so much more than a simple love story. Despite all that’s happened in Jess and Lucia’s past, their relationship allows them to confront what holds them back and truly embrace a life filled with love and happiness. Of course, it’s made a little easier due to the raging chemistry that burns hot between them, supplying the story with moments of tension and vulnerability. As readers immerse themselves in this unique and surprising journey, they are likely to discover inspiration and hope, making Paradise Lost and Found a truly enjoyable romance.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2024As I read this book, it was a cute romance. While the author didn't normally write those, I was all in. K Aten is on my autobuy list for a reason.
I continued to enjoy it even more after the twist.
This book delivered the 2 things I associate with this author: twists and my affection for all of her books.
This one gave me exactly what I expected. Loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2024Loved Jess’s journey back to herself. What a curvy, twisty road she traveled. And could Lucia be any hotter? There were a couple of times, late in the story that made my eye leak, but that could have been allergies. Of course it was. Thank you K. Aten for sharing a beautiful story!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2024Wonderful book, great concept, interesting main characters. Love the little twist on the story and that ending ! Happy tears
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024Jess Parker is in her forties, her wife cheated on her and left and after the divorce she used food to overcome her anger and hurt. She is suffering from menopause, has given up everything she once loved i.e. softball, riding her bike and has turned into a bitter woman. Her attitude towards people borders on hostile and when her best friend Shell convinces her she needs a vacation she agrees.
Having won a free two-week tropical vacation, at the Paradise Island Resort, she booked her trip. The resort is a self-improvement retreat where guests are required to see a therapist and sign up for two activities. When she arrives at the resort, she is met by the resort manager Lucia Cruz who is thin, pretty and who Jess immediately hated.
Her therapist is Dr. Kam who knows exactly what is required in Jess’s case to get her on the road to healing and change. He is what you would expect a therapist to be like and his sessions with Jess made for some enlightening reading. She begins to be less bitchy and makes friends with Lucia who has always been around when she was.
Jess had given up having a relationship but had accepted the fact that Dr. Kam was right when he asked her if she wanted to be happy. Things heat up between Lucia and her and knowing that her stay was going to be short, and that Lucia could not leave the resort, she still grabs hold of any happiness she can have.
She begins art classes and learns to love them, her sessions with Dr. Kam become something she looks forward to and signs up for other activities, activities she never considered before. Lucia gets her to bike ride again and hike some of the things she stopped doing when she was busy lamenting her life.
Although it is forbidden for staff to mingle with guests Lucia and Jess find a way to be together and their relationship grows strong despite the short time they will have together. Jess agrees with Dr. Kam that she wants to be happy, and the only problem is can she remain the same when she returns home.
This was a beautiful story of a middle-aged woman finding herself and putting her pain behind her where it belongs. Jess and Lucia were wonderful characters that I couldn’t help rooting for but there is a secret about the resort that could bring a stop to any chance of a future together.
When I first began the book, I was prepared to just read it with no thought of liking or loving it and thankfully I wound up loving it. There were secrets, surprises, sex and a second chance at the brass ring.
