One String (Lighter Ones) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

Second-chance, enemies-to-lovers, fake-date, little-sister’s-best-friend, forbidden, stand-alone contemporary romance.

Ricky Dunn is the equivalent to a splinter under my fingernail.
Romantic?
Right.
He’s the older brother of my best friend, and no matter how hard either of us try, we can’t seem to avoid each other. The problem started on the night my best friend and I graduated from high school. The party was joyous, a celebration.
That night, I willingly gave Ricky a part of me—more than the kiss we told others about.
Our deal was simple.
No strings.
Ricky kept his side of the bargain.
Years have passed.
Being from the same small town and crossing paths, I haven’t noticed how handsome he’s become or the way he’s filled out.
If you ask me, he hasn’t noticed me either.
Until he calls.
I’m working for a finance company, one he’s now interviewing for.
“Marilyn, will you be my date for the dinner with the partners? It’s only for one date and no strings.”
The problem is my heart hasn’t kept my side of our bargain.
I want at least one string.
Do I agree to his proposal, or do I turn him down flat?

Review

"I absolutely loved reading One String. These 'lighter' stories from Aleatha Romig are as fabulous to read as her darker romance novels. Once again, I was hooked from the very first chapter until the very end!" ~ Ann (Literary Lust) 5-star review

"Be prepared to be swept away this summer when "One String" pulls at your heartstrings, endearing you to this perfectly imperfect couple from start to finish. A quick yet passionate read, "One String" should absolutely be at the top of everyone's must-read list this upcoming summer." ~ Susan, Goodreads Review

"A great trip back to Riverbend. Marilyn and Ricky's story is full of ups and downs. When they are on, their heat flies off the page. When things are off, you're rooting for things to work out." ~ Molly, 5-star review

"One String is fun and flirty and will keep you smiling. And the ending is perfection! This heartwarming story will leave you with a full heart and a giant smile on your face." ~ Melanie Cesa, 5-star review

"One String hit all the boxes with Marilyn and Richard, aka, Rich, aka Ricky, LOL, working their way from a rocky beginning to a smooth-sailing ending. I LOVED it! Marilyn's sass and Ricky's insecurities made for a great combination. As someone who reads and loves dark, twisty romances, it's delightful to take a break from them and enjoy an Aleatha Romig "Lighter One." They never fail to set my world right-side up again!" ~ Chris, 5-star review

What can I say, Aleatha has done it again.

The lighter ones by Aleatha are always a joy to read and this one just blew me away, the love dripping off the pages was palatable. The heartbreak was real and the soul searching these two characters did throughout the book was off the charts.

Aleatha managed to capture all emotion in one book but still made you feel as if you knew these people and to some maybe they do as the characters come alive on the pages.

The lighter books are a joy to read, anything really Aleatha Romig writes I will read as she has a way of capturing your imagination, your heart and soul and takes you on a ride of a lifetime.

I loved and devoured every single chapter of this book and would recommend everyone to read this book and all of Aleatha's lighter side books, you will not regret it.

Rick and Marilyn story was cute. Rick had a lot going on in his mind, but his assumption almost cost him too much. Marilyn gave more chances than I would have.

Ricky and Marilyn have HISTORY. Big history, but they act like they hate each other. Fast forward about a decade and they find themselves in the same town, with Ricky needing some help from Marilyn to land his dream job. In spending time together, they realize their no-strings encounter way back when really left them both clinging to one string. They have to decide if they should strengthen that string or snap it altogether.

I loved this second chance, fake dating romance from Aleatha Romig! Her Lighter Ones series are quick reads, but pack a big punch. Enjoy!

I absolutely loved Marilyn and Ricky's story. So many fun tropes; sister's best friend, the first one, age gap all rolled into a story about fighting through the hard stuff to build a solid foundation for love. Marilyn and Ricky have been in and out of each other's lives for forever, friends, family, enemies all underscored the tension between these two. I am loving these lighter stories.

Love the characters, the story, the way it allows them to grow and the arc of their own personal lives. But at the heartbeat is a love story that shows that love enduring trait which is to forgive and accept the other person as is and how doesn’t matter time, when it is your time it is your time!

Eighteen year old Marilyn James made a deal with 28 year old Ricky Dunn on the night of her high school graduation' one time and no strings attached. Ricky stuck to the agreement, but Marilyn wasn't expecting him to ignore her after the fact, especially since his sister, Devan, was one of her besties. Her pride took a hit so for the past 7 years, she had nothing but sassy comments aimed at him whenever they were around each other socially. At Devan's wedding to Justin, Ricky's best friend, the two decide on a temporary truce. During the wedding party dancing, Marilyn learns Ricky is pursuing his bachelor's degree in Indianapolis, closing his chapter as a farmer in their small town.
Fast forwarding a year and a half later, Marilyn's working for a very prestigious wealth management firm in Indy where she interned. When Ricky calls her for a favor, she reluctantly agrees to meet him for dinner before his meet and greet dinner with the partners at her firm. Marilyn actually enjoys the time spent talking to Ricky until an unfortunate reminder of their past turns things sour.
Marilyn spends a lot of time ping ponging about how she feels about Ricky. She's trying to reconcile the hurt from his aloofness towards her in the past with the "today" version of him that she reluctantly enjoys spending time with. I really liked Ricky's character. He was honest with her from the beginning which she eventually comes to admit. He was also meticulous about his career planning though he struggled with the "I'm not worthy of her" doubts. Just as they commit to being together, something happens to test their relationship. Will they find a way to make things work together or drift apart permanently?

Marilyn and Rich had a little something many years ago...it was supposed to be "no strings" but Marilyn's 18-year-old heart didn't get the memo so she was crushed when Ricky (as he was known around their hometown) blew her off. Fast-forward to Ricky's sister and Marilyn's best friend marrying Ricky's best-friend. Marilyn decides she can lift her "hate Ricky with a passion" ban for the wedding but then she sees a different more mature side of him and decides maybe it's time to let things go. Rickly is impressed with how smart, witty, and what a go-getter Marilyn is. She is also interning where he would someday like to work. When an opportunity provides itself, Ricky calls Marilyn for help to get his dream job. After spending the evening with each other, Marilyn decides she isn't quite ready for the evening to end....... But when tragedy strikes, Ricky tries to pull back from Marilyn and she begins to question even letting him back into her life.
One String took me a little while to get into but once I did, I fell in love with Marilyn and Rich (Ricky). The first 1/3 of the book was a lot of setup, but I was fully vested once they started their relationship. I loved reading their story and Ricky' s heart made me swoon with the sacrifices he was willing to make to help out his BFF/brother-in-love and sister. BUT, Aleatha Romig Aleatha Romig Aleatha Romig Aleatha Romig Aleatha Romig Aleatha Romig he did owe Marilyn a lot of graveling. I got sucked into this book and read it over an evening. In this light, sweet romantic story, Aleatha proves she is a multi-faceted author.

Really enjoyed this standalone. It was easy to read, had a good storyline and a really nice HEA. There was enough interest and characters to hold the reader, but not to many to confuse. Ricky a long time friend of an older sibling has a one night stand with Marilyn with no strings! However regrets occur and a reunion at another siblings wedding leads to an endearing story.

    One String
    A Riverbend Lighter One
    By Aleatha Romig

No strings….that was the agreement made the night Marilyn James and Ricky Dunn made when she graduated high school. Ricky was older..this was Marilyn’s first. She was leaving for universty, he was staying on the farm in Riverbend. No strings….they could do this. Until Marilyn realized no strings was going to be harder than she thought.

Two people who walked away from one night, both realizing this no strings pact might be the hardest pacted they have ever made.

The years go by, Marilyn did go to University and only comes back to Riverbend for special occassions. Ricky’s parents sold the farm, but this has given Ricky who now goes by Rich, a chance to do what he has always wanted to do, get a degree and a job in the city. It isn’t until Rich needs to talk to Marilyn about the company she works for Parker and Stevens, a Wealth Management firm that he reaches out to her.

They have both changed, grown and matured, but old wounds can go deep. Rick has a few things he needs to apologize for but will she give him a bit of leeway and listen to his side.

What had been laying dormant for years sparks an attraction and maybe just maybe they can work through the past so that they can both have that new ONE STRING Rich is asking for now.

As their relationship grows and nights are spent together relearning the things that they’ve forgotten and new memories are made, will that ONE STRING keep them together?

There is a bit of angst here and there, but there is also that One String that has always been between them, they just needed to see it.

Will that string be strong enough to keep them together?

One String was a fairly quick read and watching these two grow as a couple was so enjoyable. Definetly one of my five star summer reads.

I really enjoyed this lighter read. It was nice to read about Riverbend again and all the characters. Marilyn and Ricky were great characters, and I enjoyed reading about their journey and the things they overcame to get there.
