An Unexpected Haunting: A paranormal, midlife rom-com that will make you laugh out loud! Kindle Edition
Alicia Stonebright's life is pretty good. She works for her beloved nephew Alex at the Stonebright Paranormal Agency and things are going well. Except for the odd mischievous ghost and her growing attraction to her new neighbour Tom, that is.
Still, as a woman in her fifties, she’s more than capable of handling both the spirits and her own hormones without too much embarrassment. She hopes.
However, the town ghosts have other ideas and soon the level of hauntings reaches overwhelming proportions. Where are they coming from and why are they there? The library appears to be the epicentre of the problem, and Alicia and Alex are determined to solve the mystery, with help from the rather eccentric members of their local paranormal committee.
Could her neighbour’s rune books be an essential part of the solution? And, even if they are, will the Stonebright Agency ever uncover the heart of this unexpected haunting?
Readers love An Unexpected Haunting, a fun paranormal romance perfect for fans of BBC's Ghosts or The Dead Romantics.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2025I liked that the main character was a middle aged woman who had a minor role in the paranormal. Her character was well developed and easy to identify with. It was a fast paced read and the characters were fun. The story was different from many of the paranormal stories and it flowed together well. I would recommend it to anyone needing a break from the pressure of today's world.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2023Anne Brooke is a gifted author writing across many genres and brilliantly so in all of them. Paranormal investigators, ghosts, and spooky shenanigans accompany the reader through the pages of An Unexpected Haunting, proving that Brooke’s pen really shines when writing supernatural tales.
Other reviewers will surely delve into the plot, so I’ll just highlight why I really enjoyed An Unexpected Haunting: Firstly, I adored Brooke’s protagonist, Alicia Stonebright. She could be anyone’s neighbor, co-worker, or friend, and her cares and foibles are sure to bring lots of smiles and nods to readers. I especially related to her need for strong coffee in the morning, and chuckled at her aversion to having to get up early. In other words, she is a 3D, real-seeming, and sympathetic character. Brooke is a master at crafting story people you would love to have as friends. The other characters were just as delightful, from Alicia’s nephew, who is her boss at his paranormal investigative agency, to her romantic interest, her hunky neighbor, to the town librarian and citizens. With a just a few sweeps of her pen, Brooke lets you feel at home in the town, makes you worry along with the town-folk as ghosts cause mischief and mayhem. Anglophiles will be in their element as Brooke delights with true glimpses of life in Merry Olde, including a lovely spread of typically English snacks and cakes, tea and coffee, at one point in the tale. I’m sure I gained a pound or two while reading that scene.
Booklovers will enjoy how the local library is a hotbed for the spectral activity. Brooke weaves the ghostly goings-on with such fun and mystery that readers will feel as much a part of the adventure as the paranormal investigators and everyone in the town. Likewise, she wraps it all up in a pleasing way, sure to leave readers with a big, satisfied smile - and a wish to join Alicia and her friends on more Stonebright Paranormal Agency ghost hunts. Yes, that’s a nudge for Brooke to write more in this delightful story world.
Bottom line: Anyone who loves books, ghostly fun, and stories with plenty of humor, will find that An Unexpected Haunting is just their cuppa.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2023I was pleasantly surprised with this book and author! It was very well written, and the storyline kept me interested throughout!
I loved the sense of humor and witty personality of the main character. Even if paranormal activities aren't your cup of tea, as it's not a genre I normally read either, I genuinely think you will enjoy this book! I look forward to reading more by this author!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2023A fun book that centers on Alicia Stonebright and her nephew Alex. They are partners in a paranormal agency, where strange things happen. Alicia tries to keep the office running like clockwork, and Alex is in charge of the haunting stuff.
The dialog between Alicia and Alex is quick and the affection between aunt and nephew shines through.
When the book begins, paranormal activity is surging, and they don't know why. When the local library is impacted, a group of the paranormal committee members (and a new love interest for Alicia--Joe) meet in the library to get to the bottom of this issue.
This book is funny, yet has moments that are on the scary side. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A paranormal comic caper
A really enjoyable read which made me chuckle. It is great to find a book featuring a middle aged heroine who is intelligent, droll and full of vim. Alicia is a thoroughly believable character who embraces her single status but still has an eye for a handsome, unattached man. It is her wry observations on her own bad habits and the lives of her nephew and neighbours which make it such a delight.
