Review
"(A)n emotional rollercoaster that delves deep into themes of betrayal and redemption with confident narration and great dramatic effect. I was impressed with the detailed, up-close portrayal of Ollie Morales. The author has a great sense of how to utilize dialogue to immediately characterize Ollie and everyone he meets, as well as using realistic language to move the plot forward with plenty of information. The intertwining of past and present events adds plenty of urgency and relevance to every interconnected moment, and the command of the timeline was watertight to hold a strong internal logic in the plot. The revelations surrounding the central attack of the story were shocking and intriguing, compelling readers to think about how past actions can echo through time. The unraveling of secrets and resurfacing of past traumas felt raw and authentic, making Ollie's journey toward understanding and forgiveness deeply moving. Overall, I would certainly not hesitate to recommend Fury in Her Eyes for its deeply moving storytelling and accomplished dramatic turns".- Reviewed by K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite
From the Author
When I set out to write "Fury in Her Eyes," I was embarking on a journey that would delve deep into themes of betrayal, revenge, and redemption. This story was a narrative woven with intricate plotlines and a reflection of personal and historical significance. Writing this novel was an experience that allowed me to explore complex human emotions and relationships, much like my previous works, yet in a unique context.
The inspiration for "Fury in Her Eyes" came from the tumultuous events surrounding the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Witnessing these events unfold, I couldn't help but imagine the personal stories behind the headlines. This led me to create the character of Pulitzer Prize-winning Hispanic photojournalist Oliver 'Ollie' Morales, whose attack by a masked rioter during these events is far from random. It's the climax of a vendetta buried deep in his prep school days, a past filled with secrets and unresolved traumas.
Writing Ollie's story was a challenge and a privilege. It required extensive research to authentically depict the events of January 6 and the intricacies of photojournalism. But beyond the research, it required empathy and a deep understanding of human resilience. Ollie's journey is one of confronting demons and seeking forgiveness, a theme that resonates with many of us. It's a story of finding closure, of learning to let go of the past to embrace a brighter future.
As with my previous novels, "Fury in Her Eyes" explores the interplay of past and present. In "Searching for Sarah," I delved into the life of a man searching for answers while navigating through his memories. Similarly, in "Last Exit to Montauk," the protagonist reflects on a pivotal summer of his youth, filled with love and heartache. Both stories emphasize how our past shapes us and how revisiting it can lead to profound personal growth.
Another of my works, "The Captain & the Queen," also explores themes of love, loss, and redemption. It tells the story of a high school romance that faces numerous challenges, ultimately leading the characters to rediscover themselves and each other. The common thread in all my books, including "Fury in Her Eyes," is the exploration of human relationships and the emotional journeys we undertake.
However, "Fury in Her Eyes" stands apart in its intensity and the stakes involved. The backdrop of political unrest and personal vendetta adds a layer of urgency and danger that wasn't as pronounced in my earlier works. This novel required me to push my boundaries as a writer to craft a story that is both a thrilling page-turner and a deep emotional exploration.
One of the most rewarding aspects of writing "Fury in Her Eyes" was developing the character of Ollie Morales. As a Hispanic photojournalist, Ollie represents a voice often underrepresented in mainstream literature. It was important to me to portray his cultural background authentically, highlighting both the struggles and the strengths that come with it. Ollie's journey is not just about revenge or redemption but also about finding his place in a world that often marginalizes him.
In creating Ollie, I drew from my own experiences and observations. As someone who has navigated multiple cultural landscapes, I understand the challenges and the richness that come with a diverse background. This understanding helped me infuse Ollie with depth and authenticity, making his story relatable and impactful.
The process of writing "Fury in Her Eyes" was also a period of personal reflection. It made me think about the themes of forgiveness and letting go. In many ways, writing this novel was therapeutic, allowing me to confront my own past and the grudges I might have held. Ollie's journey mirrored my own in this aspect, making the writing process deeply personal and transformative.
Comparing "Fury in Her Eyes" to my other books, I can see a clear evolution in my writing style and thematic focus. While my earlier works like "Searching for Sarah" and "Last Exit to Montauk" were more introspective and nostalgic, this novel is more dynamic and action-driven. The stakes are higher, the conflicts more intense, and the resolutions more hard-earned. This shift reflects my growth as a writer and my desire to tackle more complex and challenging narratives.
Another significant aspect of "Fury in Her Eyes" is its exploration of social and political themes. The events of January 6, 2021, serve as a powerful backdrop, highlighting the impact of societal unrest on individual lives. This is a departure from the more personal and relationship-focused themes of my previous works. Incorporating these broader themes added depth to the story, making it not just a personal journey for Ollie but also a commentary on the times we live in.
The novel also allowed me to experiment with different narrative techniques. Flashbacks play a crucial role in unraveling Ollie's past, creating a non-linear storytelling style that keeps readers engaged. This technique was inspired by my work on "Last Exit to Montauk," where the protagonist's reflections on the past drive the narrative forward. In "Fury in Her Eyes," the flashbacks are more than just memories; they are pieces of a puzzle that Ollie must solve to understand his present and secure his future.
The experience of writing "Fury in Her Eyes" has been incredibly fulfilling. It pushed me to explore new territories as a writer, both thematically and stylistically. It reinforced my belief in the power of storytelling to heal, to connect, and to transform. I am immensely proud of this novel and excited to share it with my readers.
To my readers, I hope that "Fury in Her Eyes" resonates with you as deeply as it did with me while writing it. I hope you find Ollie's journey compelling and thought-provoking. Most importantly, I hope it encourages you to reflect on your own lives, confront your own demons, and seek forgiveness and redemption where needed.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Your support and feedback are invaluable, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on "Fury in Her Eyes." Together, let's celebrate the power of stories to illuminate the human condition and inspire change.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a rush! Phillip Vega introduces us to Oliver Morla, a photographer turned photojournalist with one hell of an expose in his past.
The world felt immersive and accessible. Oliver's story was absolutely wild but also full of very nostalgic, sweet teenager reality. I want to know so much more about the Morales family...I really want to know what happened between the studio and January 6- what was Madam Mayhem doing there?
Vega's story really shows you can never fully know a person ..and the satisfaction you seek can be right under your nose.

I thought for sure about halfway through the book that I knew who Ollie's attacker was. But as I read my mind changed and then it changed again. Then, in the end, I was wrong all together. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but this is a definite must-read!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2024Format: KindleI have have a long-held philosophy in life that there are no "accidental encounters". People come into your life, either for a season, or a reason. Fury in Her Eyes traces a modern day encounter, whose mystery is buried decades in the past.
Ultimately, this is a novel about grace and forgiveness. In this day and age, we are so quick to react, and when the truth is revealed, it was nothing like we ever expected.
This is also a novel about judgement, and at the end of the day, who am I to judge?

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024Format: PaperbackA photojournalist is attacked and severely injured by the angry mob storming the US Capital on January 6, 2021. One of his attackers may have a connection to the photographer, Ollie, from his prep school days from 1986. Mr. Vega proceeds to spin out this complex and well-written story by toggling back and forth between the events of 1986 and Ollie’s present day recovery, which is complicated by the FBI’s investigation into his assault. This is a captivating story about awkward teenage love and the scars it leaves behind.
The 1986 extended flashbacks are the meat of the book, following Ollie, the nerdy photography club member, as he navigates his senior year at a Long Island prep school. His long-term best friend and neighbor Fiona (“Fi”) urges Ollie to ask out the new girl in school. Navia is from Belgium and is hot and sophisticated – way out of Ollie’s league. But when Ollie’s calculus teacher assigns our hero to tutor Navia, sparks fly and they end up as a couple. Ollie’s awkward attempts to be Navia’s boyfriend are described in deliciously heart-wrenching detail and this portion of the book is the soul of the story. Ollie is possessive, jealous, and borderline insane in his devotion and all-in love for Navia. So . . . classic 18-year-old nerd having his first serious relationship. Mr. Vega nails this portion of the story.
The paradise that exists within Navia’s hazel eyes and auburn hair is interrupted by an incident where the editor-in-chief of the school paper and Ollie’s sometime nemesis, Jackie, is hit in the head by a rock outside Ollie’s house while attending an impromptu Mel Brooks movie party. (Mr. Vega sprinkles in many period references and Long Island locations in the story, to positive effect. When choosing Mel Brooks films for a “first date” event, which ones would you pick?) Jackie, who has had a crush on Ollie for years, recovers, but there is suspicion that Navia might have been the rock-thrower. Later, Navia and Ollie are outside the newspaper’s office when Jackie is assaulted and nearly murdered by a mysterious figure who escapes through a window. The cops bring Ollie in for questioning after he refuses to say why he and Navia were there (in a moment of adolescent stupidity). Then, the cops arrest Ollie for obstruction of justice and force him to spend a night in lock-up, which is a traumatic event for the young man and leads to panic attacks, which then dovetail into Ollie’s struggle to recover from his injuries inflicted during the mele outside the Capital, years later.
All this leads to a crisis for Ollie and Navia at a house party thrown by a classmate, and creates the questions that are alluded to throughout the present-day portion of the narrative: who did Ollie end up married to, and what happened with Navia? I won’t spoil the very surprising ending. I will say that the story is captivating and well-crafted, drawing the reader in and making it imperative to reach the conclusion, even if all the loose ends are not wrapped up as neatly and you might like. But, regardless of how you view the ending, this novel will enthrall you and has rich, well-drawn characters in a believable world. It’s a story that aches to be finished.
Well done, and recommended.
(Note to readers, the flashback chapters and present day chapters last multiple chapters each, often ending on near cliff-hangers, then abruptly resuming later. You should bookmark the end of each segment so you can flip back and recall what was happening in the other time line when you left off.) I received a copy of this book from the author; the comments here are my own honest assessment of the story.
