About the author

Writing in a variety of genres, Black's character driven stories rarely turn out quite the way the reader would expect. The author combines imagination and experience to weave dramatic plots with believable characters in descriptive settings, whether contemporary or supernatural.
Those familiar with her prose can attest to her fascination with the paranormal. Even when it isn’t the basis of the plot, it is not unusual to find a touch of the supernatural in her books. Occasionally, the reference is so subtle, the reader could miss it.
With a passion for animals, the author includes a four-legged character in most storylines, even if just a cameo appearance. Two of Black’s novels, “Race into Murder” and “Ride into Romance,” draw on her background as a racehorse owner. Her experience at the racetrack supplies realism to the setting, the races and the characters.
Black lives in the United States with her husband, and two alien creatures disguised as cats. While each of the furry critters is unique, one of them is rumored to be ET’s second cousin. The rumor, however, has not been confirmed.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024In Bopama, a short story by Karen Black, a centuries-old family feud finally ended. Both families have equal powers: the Latriviattas use magic to help people, and the Travaglias want to use their powers in a more sinister manner. Colette Latriviatta is seven years old when, with the help of her grandmother, the Empress, she creates her first spirit doll and successfully casts a detailed healing spell. Then, her mother suddenly disappears. Collette is special and moves in with her grandmother. There she continues to learn her craft. A wave of peace exists during the next twenty years.
When her grandmother dies after living to the age of 103, Colette becomes the powerful Empress of the Latriviatta family. However, somebody just as powerful is trying to kill her.
With the help of family spirits, she learns that her mother is still alive and held captive by the same person who is trying to kill her. Colette will need help to defeat this villain and free her mother. Does good prevail over evil? If she fails, everything good will be lost!
The story is an easy and quick read with likable and detailed characters. I was wholly engaged from the beginning until the end. It is recommended for all ages. I gave it four stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2024This delightful short story, punctuated with French phrases, tackles the fight between good and evil in Louisiana, and the use of magic as the weapon of choice in that battle. Collette is three years old when the story begins, and she's already reading Tarot cards and casting spells. She's also made friends with many animals and forest creatures. She's impressed her grandmother, who's taught her many of the essential components of bopama, which means to use magic for good and not evil. There is, however, a family that does the exact reverse--uses its magic for evil and not good.
The author weaves a tale of how this young girl grows up without the constant guidance of her grandmother, who dies at the age of 103, inheriting the ability to use spells to rebuke the other family and become a champion--the empress--for her own family.
This story is well crafted and fun to read. All ages would get something out of it, especially those who might believe that young people cannot change le monde--oops, je voudrais dire the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2024This delightful short story spans several centuries with memorable characters. The use of spirit dolls--and of course Karen Black’s trademark “critters"--enhance the mood. The writing is exceptional and although I tend toward single word/short-phrase spells, the beautiful rhyming spells fulfill my poetic tendencies. Surely Karen Black is descended from the troubadours of old who sang the most captivating stories because her narrative style is never boring, always edging us on to read one more page.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2024This short story focused on a family feud between the Latraviattas and Travaglias where one family wanted to use mysticism for good and the other for evil. Over multiple generations, they families took turns casting spells on one another in attempt to control all the power. Each generation became more and more powerful until the current generation had the ability to kill and absorb all the power. It became a race to see which side, good or evil, would cast the first spell and what that spell would entail.
This was a nice read. It was a lot to pack into a short story, but the author did a good job of doing so. I honestly would have loved to read a longer novella that delved into each generation's struggles. Colette's world is turned upside down when she loses her mother and then grandmother. Then, she realizes that her life is in danger because Axel is trying to kill her. With the help of a few enchanted animals, she must find a way to thwart Axel's plans and still keep her humanity.
This author always includes animals and some kind of paranormal in her stories, and I love that. Her characters were well-developed, and the story kept me engaged. It's a quick, enjoyable read that I know others will enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2025The story was very well written. It's about a young girl who learns the power of their local religion (Bopama). She is confronted with another practitioner who wants to finish destroying her family. She is helped by two animals (a mouse and a cat) that help her gather the items needed to stop the other. The story has a happy ending, but I missed the direct interaction between the two Bopama masters.
