Humanity's Dawn: Compassion's Cry: An Epic Military Hard Science Space Opera Kindle Edition
Setting out as inquisitive children in their exploration of the cosmos they had unexpectedly finished this journey as gods, uniquely sentient in the marvel of their own existence, they had found their universe to be devoid of any other intelligent life and a creator.
As the Galactic Union of Planets and its people struggle to find further purpose, infighting amongst its factions begins to break out. In the wake of this chaos, dark and sinister forces begin to rise, claiming the opportunistic spoils for themselves by seeking to destabilise the Galactic balance of power and politics.
Meanwhile, Captain Rex Stormont and his crew aboard the Inter Galactic Vessel Bonitas speed towards a distress call emanating from a deep space research station that has come under attack from an unknown aggressor.
As they begin their investigation of the events surrounding this unexpected and uncharacteristic attack they unwittingly set into motion a chain of events that will change humanity’s very understanding of their own existence and the place they occupy within it.
The deeper Rex and his team go, the more mysterious this strange sequence of events surrounding the M104 Ultra-Massive black hole at the heart of the Sombrero Galaxy become.
Are these ominous omens something that humankind should fear? Or are they the first steps towards heralding in the much-needed next golden era of humanity?

About the author

My name is Martin Rowe, and I am a science fiction writer who is on a mission to revitalise what I see as a dormant genre by appealing to a new type of reader and hard-core Sci-Fi buff alike, combining new and original storylines and ideas with a fast paced narrative.
I feel I offer something that other science fiction writers do not, and that is a sound knowledge of the related technical and scientific subjects associated with the genre. I always seek to build my story around a plausible future timeline, bringing you the reader (technical and non-technically inclined), along with me on our journey to the stars.
I served in the Royal Navy for 22 years as a Weapons Engineer across multiple disciplines, including intelligence, before I took up the role of a Defence Engineering Consultant; something that I still do to this day.
I love doing the research for my books, and have a great interest in physics, biology, cosmology, military history and politics, always seeking to bring the most relevant and recent developments within the world around us to my books.
I live with my wife Ana and two children Anthony (19) and Mark (17) in West Sussex and am a lifelong Brighton & Hove Albion fan, who also enjoys good red wine and reading.
It is my ambition to finish the ‘Humanity’s Dawn’ trilogy by the end of 2024, before moving onto the abundance of ideas and other great stories I am currently stacking up.
This first instalment of this epic Sci-Fi trilogy ‘Compassion’s Cry’ focuses on the things that both unite and divide humanity now and in the far future. It explores issues of indifference, aspiration, truth, hope, bravery, and above all else, compassion.
I love, above all else, the interaction I have with my readers, and would love it if you reached out to me. I welcome all feedback, positive and negative, and see your opinions and views as the best tool I have at my disposal for growing as a writer.
I hope you enjoy reading my work as much as I do creating it!
Kind Regards,
Martin

- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2024An incredible amount of thought and planning went into the science, timeline, and overall world-building of the first book in this series. I’m a lifelong Star Trek fan myself, and this book will appeal to fans of that genre. Full of factions, intrigue, and suspense, it also addresses deep concepts of who we should be as individuals and as a species. Thought-provoking throughout with a dark cliff-hangar at the end, it is well worth the read! I’m looking forward to continuing with the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2024I’m a total science geek, and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful and creative use of science in Compassion’s Cry! But I also loved the characters, the concepts of a far flung future in deep space, and all of the twists and turns. I won’t elaborate, so as not to give anything away. Well written and engaging, I highly recommend Humanity’s Dawn! I look forward to reading the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Attention Grabber
My first foray into science fiction reading (usually a fantasy stalwart) and what can I say........ an excellent read which does not prolong the character building or scene setting and gets straight into the storyline. Characters you can relate to and a future that, coupled with the science and technology in the writing, you can actually believe in. A huge amount of research must have gone into what turned out to be an excellent read with no flat points. Well done Martin, top job !!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Opera? Yes! Hard SF? No!
It may be “epic”, but the inconsistencies, the blathering tautological explanations, the magical handwaving and the density of spelling errors (mostly homophones) made it too irritating to find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humanity's Dawn by Mertin Rowe
As a lapsed science fiction reader, I freely admit to feeling well out of my comfort zone when I started reading Humanity’s Dawn by Martin Rowe. But reminding myself that just because I didn’t understand all the words didn’t mean I was stupid, I persevered. Glad I did. A fascinating and thought provoking read, as well as a gripping tale. I particularly liked the potted biographies when a new character was introduced. Giving them a past, and dates and events related to that past, gave me a much better notion of the present they were living in. I also appreciated the detailed physical description of the IGV Bonitas. Again, something identifiable and real to relate to. The four factions of government in the galactic Union of Planets are intriguing. I want to meet some more technologists. The way the author seemingly casually throws in remarks like ‘monetary systems had been largely abolished by the 36th century’ and ‘humanity’s distant history of having nearly automated themselves out of the workplace in the early 22nd century’ certainly gave me pause for thought. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who’s prepared to put a bit of effort into reading and wants more than page turning entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard science and a thoughtful narrative
Do you believe in aliens? Big scary green monsters or lost little souls who just wanna go home? But think: what is more frightening – the thought of being attacked by aliens, or the thought that there ARE no aliens, that humanity is unique and alone in the whole wide multiverse? That is the premise of this intriguing book: if, after millennia of searching, Earth's scientists detect a signal from space which might, just might indicate there is sentient life out there.
There were times when I thought a degree in astrophysics might have come in useful as I tackled this book, and the hard (and plausible) science may daunt some readers. It's worth persevering, though: at the heart of the story is a thoughtful and compassionate narrative which will leave you wondering.
