By all outward appearances, Colette Tolliver, Amanda Barnes and Jilleen Calderon have nothing in common.
Discipline rescued Colette from a desperate childhood, but she remains unfulfilled. Mandy lacks nothing financially yet yearns for the one thing that escapes her: motherhood. Gripped by years of emotional pain, Jilleen struggles daily and has considered ending it all.
Their lives intersect at a single point: disordered eating.
A dash of racism, a sprinkle of religious tradition and a generous helping of dysfunctional families advance the issue. Witness the spiritual conflict behind the story as each woman travels her own road.
Will they heed the darkness that torments or the Light who delivers?

- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2018“Knowing Jesus doesn’t mean you’ll never have problems, it means you are never alone in your problems”.
This is the continuous theme of Pamela Nichols, “Necessary Food: Starved for Truth. Running out of Time”, a Christian novel that challenges the reader to question what place faith plays in our hour of need.
“Necessary Foods” delves into the lives of two women who are both at different stages of a similar battle. The reader becomes a witness to how the same war can end differently depending on the individual’s choice in weaponry. In this case your sword is wielded by one’s faith in Christ or faith in self.
The characters are fleshed out in such a way that you become completely invested in their backstories. Minor players are introduced allowing the reader to see how our protagonist became the women they are today. This insight provides an understanding as to why the ability or inability, to completely “hand it over to Christ” is not always an easy choice.
“Necessary Food” does an excellent job of touching on sensitive subject matter with grace and empathy. This novel, while perfect for any age, would make an excellent read for young adult bible studies. A study guide is provided by the author, allowing for discussion and careful thought to render well after the final page is read.
I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021I gave it 4 stars, it's a good read, the storyline draws the reader in, and the characters are relatable.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2018I just finished reading Necessary Food by Pamela Nichols. What a wonderful, meaningful story about people and the demons they fight. I loved the parallels of good and evil throughout the book. The biggest battle we will ever fight is inside our minds...the enemy is always there to tell us we are not enough when God is trying to tell us we are meant for incredible things. When we allow God to use our mind for its intended purpose, that’s when life changing, story rewriting, huge things happen. The writer eloquently tells this story in this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2018I love a book where I immediately feel a connection with the characters. This is one of those books! I immediately wanted to know more. This is a book of hope for those who are struggling in life. The characters have a connection with each other because of an eating disorder. The wrestling match between evil and the grace of the savior comes to each character in a different way. It was exciting to see the connection between people and how each person comes to a positive point in their lives. I look forward to the next book in Pam Nichols’ series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2018I just finished reading this book and found it difficult to put down. It's a quick read, however, there is no shortage of character development and a gripping plot line. I think this book is a beautiful example of the type of literature that is so very important in this day and age. It tackles true-to-life issues and addresses the very real aspect of spiritual warfare that takes place around and in us daily. The study questions at the end gave me an opportunity to dig deeper and personalize the story on a new level. Highly recommended!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2018"Necessary Food" is a modern-day reminder that we all have issues, but we also have choices; we can live in denial or choose the Bread of Life. It’s a powerful and riveting Christian novel that serves up a healthy portion of Scripture, without a lot of ‘temple talk.’ Reading through this page-turner, I found myself not only relating to some of the character flaws, but so engaged that I was actually praying for these fictitious characters! Even the ‘underworld’ (which caught me off guard) resonates of eerie truth about our frailties and vulnerabilities!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2018I love this book! I connected with the characters almost immediately. The story is well crafted and easy to read! It is a delight!
