This story was everything and more. I have to be honest - I cried all the cries in this book - both happy and sad. I feel like most women can relate to the ways Rose felt - unseen and unappreciated - maybe not to the extent she felt but some. As mothers and wives and even career women, we tend to put ourselves last and we need to say enough is enough. Rose - such a strong and beautiful woman (both inside and out) and this is a testament to the author - the ability to make us feel. Gray - I am so glad that he and the children woke up. This story is truly a beautiful beautiful story. It will stay with me for a long time!!

This is my first book by this author - and I loved it. Being honest, I knew it was a novella but I had doubts because it was dealing with a really heavy topic of a marriage in crisis, paired with a trigger warning of a death by cancer in the storyline (not the MCs). However, Maya Alden seems to be an expert in "fast fiction" and she managed some very heavy and convoluted topics, in a very graceful and interesting way, keeping the reader engaged from the get-go. I literally finished this book within a few hours and I was glued, could not put it down, and it was such an emotional ride, despite being such a short read.

Meet Rose and Gray. They've been married for more than 20 years, coming from diametrically opposite backgrounds (he's Atlanta royalty, she is basically trailer trash) - and theirs was a shotgun wedding because she was pregnant with their twins. She stops her education to help raise the kids and support the family, while he builds his career, business and wealth. The book starts at a point where Rose & Gray are (relatively young) empty nesters and instead of growing together, the cracks that have always existed in their marriage are amplified into full on fractures. Rose feels ignored & unloved, Gray has no idea she feels this way and continues to step all over her - which the children take as an example to treat their mother as invisible as well. The story really picks up when she leaves him & moves to a seaside B&B to support her cancer stricken best friend in her last days.

In the beginning, as Rose recounts all the ways in which she has been treated like a doormat - it just makes you wonder why she was so weak & helpless. You almost understand why her family treated her the way that they did, because she did not stand up for herself at any point. However, this is exactly the growth that she undergoes through the course of the book and when you see how she changes, as a person, becoming more confident and assertive in asking what she needs for herself - you're silently cheering her on.

Gray seems like a chauvinistic male - and there is very little sympathy for him when Rose leaves, because he had this coming. What becomes clear is that he's not so much chauvinistic, as he is oblivious and with further digging and self-reflection - you see the layers peeled back and how it's his own insecurities and inadequacies that lead him to deprioritize her needs. It's like he doesn't want to see the pain & suffering that she is going through because he's too afraid that she'll leave him, if he acknowledges it.

This was just a really beautiful, emotional read. Since it's short, it feels very intense and there were definitely moments where I wished we could have delved into a particular storyline or scene a little further, without feeling rushed. I was left wanting more but I get that this is the author's style and she's done a great job within the construct. From a personal angle, this is a story that so many moms & wives are familiar with - but seeing Gray acknowledge and handle the honest conversation in such a compelling way, it makes you see that it's a fairly straight forward solution for something that plagues most (if not all) marriages past a certain point...

100% recommend - especially if you're a mom juggling multiple things & people and being the unacknowledged superhero that you are....this one is for you.

This story was great! I love a story where the FMC stands up for herself and lives her own life. I also love. A MMC who realizes what he lost and puts in the work to fix it. I like the style and flow of the story, the way we got little pieces of the past sprinkled throughout the present. Honestly, Gray’s early behavior was cringeworthy, and Rose’s early spinelessness was hard to stomach, so just giving us a taste here and there, offset by her strength and his groveling of the present made for the perfect balance! I hated her kids in the beginning, and I was super-invested in seeing Aimee-without-a-Y get what was coming to her as well, and the bonus chapter was definitely satisfying! Loved it!!!

Great story. Compelling plot that I couldn't put down. Great deep characters that you want to get involved with in the story. You gotta love Malou. Sad ending for her, but she added so much to the reconciliation of these two insecure people. 5 stars

This has become my favorite book and I plan to reread again and again. I adore Malou! Rose and Malou’s friendship was a beautiful thing and their sisterhood was unbreakable. I loved the way they looked out for each other and the way Malou lifted her up and the way they supported each other. I am going to have to get spoilery to properly express my love of this book.

    *****SPOILERS*****

This book really hit me in the feels. I cried a lot and not like the gentle tears, but ugly cried my eyes out. It could be my 28 year marriage to the man that knocked me up (I like to tell him I trapped him forever.) or maybe it was her depression and need to please at all costs, the empty nest, the ages, likely all of it really. It made me appreciate what I have in my life more. I loved that there was no cheating. It was real and believable. That does happen, sometimes we lose ourselves, especially when we get married and have kids so young. It’s a struggle to learn who you are without taking care of your kids when they go out on their own. It is a struggle and not everyone has a Malou. I loved seeing Rose find herself and see her family fight for her and realize what a beautiful person she is and how lucky they are to have her in their lives.

I hated saying good bye to them. Now I want her kids’ stories. I want to see Jude step into the company and be mentored by Justin. I want to see Willow and Mike’s marriage and life together. I want to see Holden’s future with Bonnie and maybe her learn to be better and less shallow or Holden to move on. I do believe he may have a thing for Rose, despite never even considering acting on it. I’d love to see him get a happily ever after either with an improved Bonnie, which I do think there is a story there, or move on.

Maya Alden really breathed life into the characters and made me care about them and their future. I know it’s a standalone, but I can’t help but wish for more, because I just didn’t want it to end. Maya Alden has become one of my favorites that I will read anything she writes and wish for more.

Wow, this book had me sobbing at Rose’s story.

I don’t want to say too much and spoil the whole plot as I loved the way the story draws you in and takes you along the self discovery, acceptance and love in their journey.

The story tells you about Rose, how she is treated by her family and how she reacts to that.
She got pregnant at 18 with twins and married her baby daddy. She grew up in trailer park and Grey (her husband) was rich.

Rose’s ride or die is Malou, they’ve been friends since being children and Malou’s directness and sense of humour are refreshing and sweet.

WOW! If I’m honest I’m out of words. I just finished this masterpiece and can’t quite wrap my head around how this book managed to break my heart, mend it, made me loath someone I don’t know and who doesn’t exist so much and also make me love a person I don’t know or even exist.
I don’t think I cried so much ever while reading (FYI the last time I said that was also a book I’ve read from Maya).
Reading about Rose’s struggles, to put it mildly, left me feeling raw and emotional.
That Grey managed to make me like him, shows how well Maya manages to write grovel and second chances.
Milou has my heart, I wished everyone would have a friend like her. She was generous, loving, funny, forgiving and grateful.
Reading this book was a beautiful, raw, emotional and inspiring experience and I recommend everyone to go on this experience as well.

This was one of my most anticipated reads this year and the author did not disappoint. I cried so much reading this story I woke my husband. It’s a very raw look at what neglect does to a marriage and just how much a wife can take before she breaks. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a story jam packed with angst and betrayals. I loved it!

Being a married working mother, I can relate to the book very much. In a longer run, we ladies lose our respect, in the hands of our husbands, kids, managing families, and endless responsibilities. We should never do that, never. The feeling of being taken granted all the time is very painful. This story is beautiful, how the respect that was first snatched brutally by the spouse was beautifully given back to the wife with dignity and respect. Even the kids learned their lesson and gave their mother a well-deserved appreciation. And how the female lead stood for herself is also worth learning.. thankyou Maya Alden for such a beautiful story..
