No Ordinary Love: A Second Chance Romance (A Modern Vintage Romance) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,822 ratings

I broke her heart, but I will win her back.
Because mine is...No Ordinary Love.

Lucas Covington had everything: Charleston's old money, a successful family business, and Amara—the strong, brilliant professor who turned his world upside down.

One careless conversation destroys it all.

When Amara overhears Lucas admitting he's still torn about his recently single ex and not sure if he loves her, she walks out, leaving behind the life they were building and the man too blind to see what he had.

As Lucas tumbles back into a toxic relationship with his high school sweetheart, he realizes just how badly he screwed up. Amara was the woman he needed, the one who made him feel alive. The one he loves.

Unable to heal her broken heart, Amara decides to leave Charleston. When Lucas finds out, he pulls every string he can, forcing her to stay in the city under the guise of a high-profile consultancy gig.

Now, with Amara back in his orbit but not in his arms, Lucas has to fight harder than ever to win her back. But with his ex-girlfriend digging her claws in and his own mother backing her, it's a battle he might not survive.

It's going to take a hell of a lot of groveling and facing his darkest truths to prove to Amara that his love is no ordinary thing.

I received an ARC of No Ordinary Love by Maya Alden, and it’s a book that stays with you long after the final page. This raw and fiercely evocative romance tugs at the heart with its passionate intensity and relentless emotional depth. Lucas Covington, born into Charleston’s old-money legacy, is used to winning—until he meets Amara, the fearless and brilliant professor who makes him question everything. But Lucas’s privileged life has made him blind to the power of true love, and it only takes one overheard, careless confession to send everything spiraling. When Amara overhears Lucas’s ambivalence toward their relationship, his uncertainty shatters her. She walks away, leaving Lucas to fall back into the arms of his high school ex—a choice that only drives home the magnitude of his mistake. Lucas’s toxic spiral with his former flame feels all too real and relatable, showing the complexities of love, regret, and the sharp edge of lost trust. Amara, meanwhile, proves her strength by deciding to leave Charleston to find peace, setting up a clash that’s as much about self-worth as it is about romance. Lucas’s desperate attempts to keep Amara in Charleston, leveraging his influence to pull her back under the guise of a consultancy project, set the stage for a redemptive journey. Lucas must not only win Amara back but fight through his insecurities, family pressures, and his ex-girlfriend’s manipulations. What stands out most in this book is Lucas’s character growth—from someone hesitant about his feelings to a man fighting with every fiber to prove his love is not just real but exceptional. No Ordinary Love is a consuming, powerful romance about second chances, the journey to self-awareness, and the courage it takes to admit you were wrong. Alden’s characters are vivid, flawed, and incredibly human, making it easy to root for both of them. This is a story that will pull readers into an emotional roller coaster, as Lucas’s groveling, reflection, and ultimate redemption serve as a testament that real love is never simple, but it’s worth every fight.

** This review contains spoilers **

I love a book with a good betrayal scene and Maya Alden always delivers. She is an excellent writer and can make the reader feel all the emotions both the MCs are going through. You could feel the pain and devastation that Amara felt when she overhears Lucas' conversation with his mother. I could feel her heartbreak when she hears Lucas describe his lukewarm feelings for her in contrast to the passionate love he still feels (or thinks he feels) for his recently single ex-girlfriend. The one that left him for his best friend. I was proud of her when she dumps him, not willing to be his second choice.

Lucas was weak following with whatever his family, especially his mother, wanted him to do. Including allowing them to mistreat Amara throughout their relationship. She was a very educated, independent, kind woman and she didn't deserve any of the horrible treatment nor should she have put up with it. Lucas was very confused throughout a large portion of the book about his feelings towards both women. I did like that Lucas was celibate throughout their separation. I did feel that Amara forgave too easily. Especially when Lucas allowed everyone to believe he was dating the other woman. When the OW announced to everyone in her speech at the banquet that they were together both professionally and personally Lucas should have SHUT IT DOWN right then and there. In the minimum he needed to announce PUBLICLY that that was not true and he was dating Amara. Amara was humiliated in public then he needed to apologize in public. I was happy when Lucas finally put his mother in her place.

I loved Lucas' grandmother and how she guided him to his true feelings. I would also love to read a story about Jax. I would love to read his HEA.

It was well written but I just really disliked the lack of mindfulness of the MMC, once he had things sorted he just got wishy washy, still recommend this book though, all Maya's books are worth the read

The book blurb does a great job of giving an overview of the story. What a book blurb can’t do is convey the true depth of the feelings involved. Amara’s pain breaks my heart. Sure, we can say move on, but if you love someone with all your heart you can’t just move on. We wouldn’t tell someone who lost their love to death to just get over it and move on. But. what she doesn’t do is stay in a relationship where she seems to be a “placeholder”.

The hero Lucas is stuck on the feelings one has for their first love. He has built her up to be the right one, and she ( unlike the heroine) has the approval of his family. His life would move along easily enough if he hooked back up with the ex. Plus, he didn’t get to end the relationship on his terms, so you know hurt male ego and all. So, he is confused. His confusion results in sending mixed signals to the heroine and to the ex. Although, the ex was bent on securing the hero, so she really didn’t care that the hero was not making the overtures of a man in love.

The h overhearing the H tell his mom his thoughts on her and his “true” love was heartrending, and came as a shock to her. He had just convinced the h to move in with him. She has some great supports throughout the story to help her through the heartbreak. It also helps that she is a well respected and liked professor. It doesn’t take long for the hero to realize his mistake in ditching the heroine, and I would like to say he didn’t make any other missteps while pursuing her again, but he does. If you like emotional, angsty love stories with a sweet, but strong heroine, you should enjoy this newest venture from Maya Alden.

Another wonderful story by Maya. I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting. As always you feel the heartbreak of the characters, and rage at the characters trying to split them up.

The gut punch and angst in this book really hits you. I love reading about strong woman and Amara is certainly that. Maya Alden sucked me in right from the beginning for this story, I couldn't put it down. If you love overheard betrayal and grovel then make sure you read this book.

    3.75 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoy these books. They provide what I desire: OW, drama, and a good back story.
Characters have enough depth to make the tail entertaining, but not so much that you cannot get a closure with them.
The balance between content and emotion is good and I will keep reading them because of this.

This book was really good, I couldn't stop reading, it captivated me from beginning to end! Amara proved to be strong and resilient in the right way, and even though Lucas irritated me with his blindness at the beginning of the book, he later redeemed himself.
