Strong, feisty, hard-working woman vs immature, self-absorbed, entitled man & toxic fiancee

Strong, feisty, hard-working woman vs immature, self-absorbed, entitled man & toxic fiancee
Kudos to Maya Alden for this 'final' epic, angst-driven, Archer family book. Life's reality checks can either make or break you. Elika chooses to make it whilst navigating toxic former and current relationships. On the other hand, Dean's immaturity and entitled attitude means it takes him a while to acknowlege life can be a bitch too. Did wonder if this is because he's the youngest sibling ... then ... nope, that's just Dean. For me, Tate Archer saves Dean's tush with his unconditional acknowlegement and acceptance of Elika and Duncan's input is a welcome surprise too. I enjoyed exploring Elika's Hawai'ian culture, heritage and family dynamics - especially her language. As a Maori wahine, I got really excited to realize how close our reo or languages are. In closing, fell in love with Dante and hope to read his story too - pleeeaasse Maya 🤭

Run, don't walk and grab this book up now!!! Every time Maya Alden drops a book, I scream and cry and say it's my favorite, until the next one. I will never be able to hoose one at this point. Not even a favorite couple!

We are back in the world of the Archers, for the last brother Dean. He is the youngest out of the boys, and after just seeing his two older brothers fall in love and get married, he wants that. He goes and gets engaged to his coworker/ lifelong friend. When they are on summer vacation in Hawaii, he runs into Elika, a girl whom he had a fling with four years prior. This causes him to have some deeper reflection on his part and ask himself some tough questions. Dean is torn between his fiancee and Elika, the girl who got away.

Dean has so much growth in this book in the shortest amount of time. I love his journey and come about. He really was able to dig deep and ask himself the hard questions. Elika was sweet and vulnerable. She may have started out trying to please everyone and be a peacekeeper, but she learned very quickly how to stand up for herself.

I'm sad to see the Archers go. They are truly the greatest set of brothers. Oh and can't forget mama Marcella, everyone needs her!

First, I really, really need to go to Hawaii after reading this. I love the elements of island history and life. Elika’s love of her home, despite all her hardships, was just beautiful to see. I loved all the women in the books, but something about her just got to me. I loved her and Dean together.

That being said, I feel like Damian and Duncan kind of earned their way into Emilia and Elsa’s heart and proved themselves through a lot of grovel and suffering and feel like Dean got off a bit easy. Elika was just so amazing. I do love that she really made him work for it after the fact. That was a long time of dating before engagement and I feel like that was her making him work for it, which I loved! That made up for it to me. I loved that Dean waited for her and that Elika found her happiness. I also loved that her and Noe found their way back to each other.

This was just a beautiful book. I loved it and it was so much more than a romance. It was really a story of Elika’s strength and resilience. I loved seeing her finally see all her work recognized and her “family” get what was coming to them!

Big positive - the details of Kauai. Loved being able to see it in my mind as I was reading.

However, this story was too much/too little. After everything Dean did to her (too much) he didn’t have to do anything to get Elika back (way too little). Dean’s dad was the one to put in the work. Dean is such a weak character. Elika is so much better than he is. She deserved someone else - so much more than him. Also, everything about him being bisexual seemed to come out of nowhere (over half way into the story) and was so jarring. Weaving it in throughout the story, from the beginning, would’ve been better. It was a pleasant surprise to read that Elika had sexual partners after him, instead of remaining chaste, as so many authors like to insist on. Honestly, I just skimmed the rest of the story because I like to read how the bad guys get their “just rewards” (although that comes in a bonus chapter and was very anticlimactic) and kept with it to take notes on all the mentioned places in Kauai that are real - for my bucket list vacation - lol.

Again Maya has outdone herself. I love all three of these books so far. Not only do you fall in love with the main characters but also some of their friends as well it awesome. Would have loved a little more spice but it was still AMAZING! I really hope a book comes out about Dante and his virgin wife; how she is more than he could ever imagine but misjudged her cause her virgin status! Please say that book is coming! Can’t wait for the next read from Maya I am ready!

So, I’ve read all of Maya’s books. This was my first ARC ever, and while I appreciate that, I’m nothing if not honest. This book was different from anything she has written before, in all the good ways. Alden is a master of writing angsty, emotional romance, and this might be my favorite of hers. And I never expected that. I don’t love perceived “cheating”
romance, and while this doesn’t have cheating, per se, it’s definitely got other woman drama. This is written SO well and brings out the emotions of all the characters. Emotionally stunted men, who often grow up in privileged environments need a dose of reality and Alden always delivers for them. Dean has no idea his own biases and immaturity, but he learns and grows and makes changes to be a better person. While Elrika stays true to herself and also grows to stand up for herself while remaining open and loving. I just LOVE Maya Alden and her character development. It’s ALL. THE. FEELS.

Erika’s life has been a barrage of set backs, hard knocks and just plain bad luck. She handled it all with grace and dignity. Dean was a jerk with his snobbish ways. When she overheard what Dean really thought of her, my heart broke for her. She worked so hard to make a better life for her sister. She was demeaned by his fiancée (her cousin) and her aunt every chance they got. I wished the they had gotten a better comeuppance. It was so good seeing how he groveled and realized what a jerk he had been to her. Great HEA!

I have loved all of this series and am sad that it’s come to an end!
I often find myself wondering how on Earth is Maya going to redeem these so called heroes - and while I might still think they’re actions make them a j*ck*as I still find the HEA pleasant - not wishing the h had ran off with someone else.
I look forward to her next book!

This is Dean and Elika's story. Dean(the youngest of the Archer brothers) and Elika met and had a two week "relationship" four years prior to the start of this book, you learn this during the story. At that time Dean said some awful things about Elika that she overheard. They have no contact with each other over the four year gap. Elika is a strong female character. She takes care of her invalid sister even though her sister treats her like crap most of the time. Elika gave up her dreams to take care of her sister. Dean is an arrogant a$$hole, he's more interested in status and education, he believes Elika is beneath him because she's a housekeeper at the resort and has no post secondary education. Dean is engaged to Elika's cousin Felicity at the beginning of the story and Elika's Uncle's family treats her like crap. Dean finally realizes that Felicity is not the woman he thinks she is and wants to get to know Elika better. Dean gets some help from his family to help Elika and things start to turn around for her. Elika decides to give Dean a chance to work on a relationship and they work together to get their HEA. This was a well written story and the descriptions of Hawaii make me want to visit! If you love an overheard betrayal followed up with some grovel, you'll love this book.

Maya never fails to delivers! Out of all her books, this book is def my favourite!! As a Polynesian female, it feels soooo gooooooddd to have an FMC that has Polynesian heritage! And the knowledge behind the history of the art of Hawaii - chefs kiss! Absolutely loved this book! I usually never add a review and only rate the books, but this book really did it for me! Thank you Maya for mentioning Polynesia! LOVE IT!!!

    4.5⭐️

This was such a wonderful edition to the Marriage by Contract series. Maya never fails to deliver an emotional poignant sorry of heartbreak and redemption. Elika has a strength of purpose and drive to take care of her family regardless of it negatively impacts her health or well being. And in spite of her weighty burdens, her compassion for life and people never waver.

I loved that she stood up to Dean and refused to be swayed by his money or ill-worded apologies. Her pain was visceral and it was so refreshing to watch his self-reflection turn into a desire to be a better man.

I cannot recommend this story or the series enough. It’s pain but beautifully tender and I hope you will love it as much as I did. I’m crossing my fingers that Dante will one day get a story, too!
