I worked as a career banker all my working life in Canada. In 2005 I was promoted and informed that my new office would be downtown. I hadalways worked in the suburbs so I was not looking forward to the commute. Onecrisp autumn morning, after exiting the train, I walked briskly up UniversityAvenue to my office. I noticed a tiny park next door to a large courthouse. Thecrab apple trees in the park had lost all their leaves. It was a beauty to seethe slender branches covered with thousands of little, ripe crab apples. Somewere strewn on the ground. A gang of squirrels were frolicking and having agood time feasting on the crab apples. Suddenly, an idea came to me. Write achildren's book about squirrels living in a city! The next day, equipped withmy camera, I stopped at the park and took pictures of the crab apple trees andthe squirrels. They were still feasting there! The pictures providedinspiration to concoct some delightful squirrel stories. Nosey Charlie Chokeson a Wiener! is book # 3 in the Nosey Charlie Adventure Series. It demonstrateshow summer in the city fascinates Charlie and continues to stir his curiosity.

This daffy little story about a nosey squirrel kept me and two small boys amused for a good hour. Why? There is a neat bonus of colouring pages from the book. I printed a few choice ones and as we went through the story I built drama by asking the boys what would happen next. I created some excitement around drawing alternative scenarios for the poor squirrel with the wiener problem.
The author impressed me by using the technology to blend good old fashioned reading with downloads that enhanced the experience. My six and eight year old listeners loved drawing grisly endings for Charlie! And colouring him vividly.
The message about listening to warnings is delivered in a way that little kids will absorb.

An enjoyable and humorous story of Charlie the squirrel and the trouble he gets into as a newcomer in a new environment. I look forward to more adventures with Nosey Charlie.

It’s summer. Wieners are on the grill, and a delicious aroma is in the air. Who wouldn’t be salivating and wanting to eat some? Poor Charlie! It just wasn’t your day that summer’s day. But you had a cousin who is your friend, and he comes to the rescue. Great lessons for kids to learn. These stories are imaginative and amazing.
