- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2024This collection of stories regarding the death of victims is superbly written. Every story was so captivating to me that the book kept me up way past my bedtime.
The lead characters of every story were so artfully defined that I could feel their heart and mind. They tried hard to avoid their oncoming death but couldn't.
The story that captured me was written about Inca children sacrificed to please the gods, to give the people better weather and crop yields, all done to keep rebellions against the leaders from happening.
Death awaits us all, but every victim in these fascinating stories came to death before their time. In most cases it was caused by leadership of society or the company they worked for.
These stories were so captivating that I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2024This is a collection of 16 spooky and creepy stories. Some of them are horror stories, some of them are paranormal stories and some of them are historical fiction depicting dark events in the past. All of them are spellbinding and interesting. There are spider dances, ghosts, séances, human sacrifice, sirens, murders, mass murderers, deadly diseases, icy magical mountains, enraged gods, volcanoes, 500-year-old history, war and poisoning, baby farming, gruesome death, chimney sweep children, and much more. Many of the stories end in death but some of them have happy endings.
The stories are fiction and quite imaginative, but they all have a background in reality whether it is a historical event or some gruesome tradition or myth from the past. At the end of each story the author has an “About” section explaining the background to the story. This ends up being quite educational. At least I learned a lot from reading the About sections, and sometimes I also googled the information to learn more.
I think my favorite story was Glass Mountain. This was a science fiction-like story taking place in the future. A group of young men participate in a reality TV game show. If they succeed in their quest, they will be rich. They are supposed to climb a mysterious and icy mountain called Glass Mountain. The problem is that no one comes back from the climb, and the young men eventually found out why. Another fascinating story was the siren who was raised as a human vegetarian, which is like trying to make your cat a vegetarian. Her father also did not allow her to sing. As you may guess, she grew up.
Above all these 16 stories are very entertaining. I love spooky stories and these stories were thrilling, unique, creative and very well written. I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2024And the Grave Awaits is a collection of short stories by Roberta Eaton Cheadle that has a common theme of death and crosses several genres, including horror, suspense, and literary fiction. What binds them together including the common theme is that they are brilliant! Roberta Eaton Cheadle is an extraordinary writer with vision, empathy, and compassion. Cheadle pulls the reader into these stories and makes us feel the emotions and experiences of the characters.
All the stories are excellent, but my favorite is “All That Glitters Is Not Gold” in which Cheadle explores the circumstances of the Radium Girls during the early part of the 20th Century. While not supernatural in any way, the horror of this story is compelling.
I give this extraordinary book my highest recommendation. It is extraordinary!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024“And the Grave Awaits” is a well-written collection of short stories that pulled me in from the first page. Some stories were based on actual events, and others were more in the paranormal realm. The details that went into the historical fiction stories transported me to that time and place. I felt for the hardships the children who swept chimneys underwent under cruel adults in “An Eye for an Eye” or the women painting dials with radioactive paints in “All that Glitters is not Gold.” “The Bite” caught my attention immediately and when wolf spiders came up, I was all in. They are local spiders that have always fascinated me and this spin on spiders and humans was intriguingly unique. After each of the sixteen stories, there’s information like where the story has been published or the history behind it. A fantastic collection I can highly recommend, especially for those who like stories with a darker twist.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2024And the Grave Awaits is a collection of well-written paranormal and horror short stories by Roberta Cheadle. They all have a common theme of death in the end which adds a sense of dread as to who will be the victim or victims. There is a sadness knowing there will never be a happy ending, though my optimistic self never gave up hope. I was immediately drawn into each tale, all of which evoked a variety of stirring emotions. They are scary, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, appalling, and cringeworthy at times. I love that so many are rooted in historical events which makes them all the more poignant to think similar deaths have actually occurred. The stories with children were particularly tough for me. They are all clever stories, but my favorites are The Bite, All That Glitters is not Gold, and The Warning. Cheadle is a wonderful storyteller with a vivid imagination. I highly recommend this amazing collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2024If you’re looking for some spooky autumn reading, Robbie’s new collection of short stories is a must-read. She re-weaves true historical events and folk tales into fresh, original tapestries that satisfy the reader’s curiosity, interest, and need for a tense, suspenseful, supernatural scare fest. This is the perfect book to get you into the Halloween mood. My favorite stories are “The Bite,” “Death is About Choices,” “The Warning,” “Justice is Never Served,” and “Hide-and-Seek.” The historical background is provided with each tale, giving the reader a mini history lesson. I definitely learned things I had not known before. I highly recommend this book and give it five thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive short stories
Cheadle’s stories will take you right into the experiences – not always a good thing with some of these stories. The stories are mostly dark and grim but nonetheless addicting, perhaps not all for bedtime reading. The stories are somewhat horror filled but not in the sense of graphic horror, but what we imagine of the characters enduring. I enjoyed that the author recaps each story with many based on true historical events, fictionalizing and elaborating on each situation. In these dark toned stories, there is a good mix of paranormal, horror and historical fiction. All stories thread death through their themes. The author does an amazing job drawing us into story then further explaining at end of each chapter, the true event that inspired each gripping story.
My Favs:
The Bite – Never under-estimate the power of a woman. And I loved the explanation about where this story was born from – The Tarantella myth.
Death is About Choices – Based on 13th century practice of child sacrifice during the Inca Empire. Juanita is chosen for sacrifice. Will the spirits of her dead brothers save her from slaughter?
The Path to Antonement – A great fictional telling about a real suicide that occurred at the author’s workplace.
Glass Mountain – A team of boys are to climb a death-defying mountain. Many aren’t known to survive, but the TV cameras are filming the Annual Youth Challenge TV show , and the prize for any survivors is – anything they want. Great building of anticipation.
Christmas Pie – Based on the events occuring in England with the last Abbot of Glastonbury, trying to save the destruction of the abbey by King Henry VIII, with good intentions foiled.
Justice is Never Served – Fictionalized accounting based on the true story of baby murderer, Amelia Dyer from Victorian era England.
An Eye for an Eye – A sad fictional story based on the true events back in Victorian England where orphans known as ‘the climbing boys’ were used to clean ash and soot from chimney sweeps where many died stuck in flues, suffered burns or contracted carcinomas. A sad tale about two brothers.
All that Glitters is not Gold – A powerful historic and fictionalized telling of the true story about The Radium Girls who worked in factories during WWI painting watch dials containing Radium. These women were fooled by their government about the dangers of such work, and suffered the consequences.
I realize some of my favs here are half the book, but good writing is good reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating collection of short stories
And the Grave Awaits is an eclectic compilation of stories by the author with death as the uniting feature. Each tale is different and many of them are based on true stories, others have a paranormal twist and yet others take the ordinary and take it to extraordinary conclusions.
Some of the tales are set in the past and have been meticulously researched. Death is About Choices is set in the Inca empire and the belief that human sacrifices would please the gods and make for bountiful harvests. The children chosen were ‘the purest and most beautiful’ and we follow Juanita, aged twelve, who is ordered to eat an elite diet of maize and meat to ‘fatten her up for the kill’. When she refuses to eat, her family are threatened with imprisonment. The account of the journey and its ritual is vividly described.
Two stories concern appalling conditions that women faced during the second decade of the 1900s. In The War Babies, we learn of the health issues confronting those who worked in the manufacturing of munitions during the war. Apart from the risk of explosions, the toxic substances they used poisoned the women. In All that Glitters is not Gold, we follow the fate of the Radium Girls who painted radium onto the dial and hands of clocks and watches, encouraged to lick the tips of the brushes for a finer stroke.
Some tales are set in the now and concern a variety of issues such as the devastation of failure, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anaphylaxis. There is even an account of a reality TV show in a dystopian future with a massive twist in its tale.
The writing is varied and conveys character and atmosphere well. In a story set in the reign of Henry VIII, a ray of sunlight on an elderly abbot’s white hair ‘created the fleeting impression of a halo on his worn and creased face’. A furtive woman uses ‘short, sharp looks like a bird approaching a bit of food’, and a desperate couple searching for their son find the mist ‘turned their torch beams into meaningless swathes of golden light particles’.
Each tale is followed by a brief account of what inspired the author to write it and has a different feel. Some are tragic, others are almost triumphant in their conclusion. The whole makes for an engaging read.
