CARNAL (Exiled Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,249 ratings

"Couldn't put it down. Read it in one day. It's THAT good!" - Romance Authors That Rock.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Victoria Danann, introduces a groundbreaking series about a genetically altered new species. They’re heart-stopping beautiful to look at, but also bigger, faster, stronger and smarter.

"I adore Carnal, a true bad boy hero if ever one was written." - The Paranormal Romantic

The rogue angel, Kellareal, stopped the genocide of a hundred and forty three human/animal hybrids who'd been genetically engineered as an experiment. Generations had spent their entire lives imprisoned and used as research subjects. Against orders, he spirited them away to another world. In a twist of irony, they were given the job of protecting humans from the result of their own hybrid experiment gone very, very wrong. When Rosie Storm asked Kellareal for a place to hide and teach her boyfriend a lesson, she thought she was getting a few weeks of tantrum-fueled asylum. The last thing she was expecting was to be the accidental architect of a war. Or to meet someone like Carnal.

Lightning Room Reviews..."...simply being outside a cage is not the same thing as being free." - Rosie

There are some who would argue that life itself is one big cage and the key to happiness is learning how to work within its confines. I think it's possible that the worst kind of cages are those we build around ourselves. Whether that be out of fear, perceived necessity or habit. It seems like once we build those cages, we intentionally throw away the key; satisfied to live within our own carefully constructed limits.

That is, until someone comes along, rattles the bars and asks when you're coming out to play. In this story, that is exactly what Rosie does for the Hybrid clan. She shows up, running from her own newly found constraints and choices and ends up rattling all the cages she can find, including her own.

But she never counted on meeting Carnal. Or his family. Or that she would expand her own definition of family to include them.

Carnal is a pretty typical bad boy. Hot as sin, smooth talking, ruggedly obstinate, capable, physical and utterly alpha. Where he veers off course of the expected, however, is that he's willing to shed the armor of that position in order to climb into Rosie's cage with her so they can figure out the view together.

Watching these two come together is familiar only because the author loves to bring characters together in unexpected ways; providing her readers with humor and tantalizing sexiness along the way. But every single character she's ever written stands on their own, because the skill with which the author crafts personalities on the page is almost unparalleled. She can give you a character that you're positive you already know, that appears to fit perfectly into a predetermined box and then turn the whole thing upside down, leaving you grateful for the complete change in perspective at the end. Even when it's heartbreaking. Especially when it's heartbreaking.

This story is a gorgeous ride on a magical motorcycle into an alternate dimension with characters you already love and new characters you come to adore just as passionately.

And as with all books that Victoria Danann writes, I have to applaud her willingness to go balls out all the way through. I think she wanted to write about what happens when you choose freedom. How profound of a choice that is and the unending ripple effects it will have throughout your life. And we get all of that and more in this book, told with her lyrical, smart, funny, gorgeous way with words.

Don't forget the fuzzy handcuffs as you gallivant through dimensions with Rosie in this one. You won't regret it and I promise that your definition of "free" will ring a bit truer by the time you turn the last page.

"QUEEN OF ALPHA MALE CHARACTERS!" - Slashed Reads

Victoria's signature humor ("Everybody was staring at me because I was on the subway in fits of laughter and couldn't stop!") creeps into each and every book whether she intends it or not. But the heart of Victoria's books is romance, the real kind that often begins with slow burn then lasts and lingers like a charge in the air. Forever.

The rich characterizations and quirky personalities that readers so often comment about come from being a lifelong student of behavior - casually (love to people watch), and a serious student of behavior academically. She has also studied comparative religion, myths, and Dark Ages history.

Victoria lives in The Woodlands, Texas with her husband and a very smart, mostly black German Shepherd dog.

Victoria Danann has done it again. This is a story that pulls you in and makes you care for each and every character.

Rosie is suffering. She has just broken up with her lover and she realizes it was mostly her own fault even if she won't admit it. She asks her friend Kellareal to find her a place where she can hide out and nurse her wounds. He takes her to a little project of his in another dimension and places her among the Exiled. Their race was about to be destroyed by the humans who had genetically altered and enslaved them and now feared the creatures they had created. Kellareal saved the hybrids from genocide and transported them to another realm. In exchange, the Exiled agreed to protect the humans of that dimension against the more violent hybrids that those humans had created.

The Exiled don't trust humans, any humans. But since they do trust Kellareal, they agree to let Rosie live and work with them. For her part, Rosie promises Kellareal not to reveal her powers. She is only part human. She has much more demon and witch in her.

This story follows her as she tries to earn the trust of the Exiled and to stand on her own for the first time. She learns to see the world through different eyes as she gains wisdom and maturity. She manages to teach her new friends some important things as well.

She also meets Carnal. Oh, my. At first, I wanted her to go back to her old boyfriend, but believe me, Carnal has a way about him. I soon came to love him and the way he treated Rosie. His inner strength and capacity to love are amazing. Typical of Victoria Danann's skill, I swiftly became interested in most of the characters in the book. Carnal's youngest brother Charming was delightful and yes, very charming. I was concerned about his other brother Crave who had been captured by the savage hybrids and his intended mate. Then there was his incredible father, Free who is the leader of the Exiled and had to make difficult decisions about their future.

Filled with romance and danger as well as sorrow and joy, the book asks some difficult questions about trust, race, and freedom. When is it not honourable to keep a promise? Is a little freedom worth another form of bondage? Can one race truly trust another after so many years of hatred and abuse?

This is a wonderful addition to the books. They are best if you read them in order. That way you can truly appreciate the richness and complexity of the characters and the depth of their stories.

These Black Knight Swan stories are fascinating. Previously, it had been said that Elora Rose Storm was predestinated to be special, one of a kind and very powerful. After her heartbreaking relationship with Glenn, the one she thought preferred the job instead of her, Elora Rose Storm (Rosie) needed a break to get over Glenn’s decision. Years ago, the angel Kellareal had begun a special project thinking that he could kill two birds with one stone and when Rosie summoned him, seeing Rosie predicament, he took her to another dimension with his own agenda in mind. But immature Rosie didn’t follow the angel instructions and soon she was at the lead of very interesting and intense events. She met Carnal and
began a struggle with her beliefs. Lots of action, suspense and intrigue in addition of moments of intense pain and suffering. In this part Elora Rose experimented strong and powerful emotions that made her mature and understand what purpose meant. Not easy to forget Rosie’s pain. It made me emotional and I enjoyed and cried with her. The characters were fascinating, strong, smart, sexy, and powerful in the way of the hybrids. The different detailed narrations filled my mind with images of struggles to survive, suffering, love and sacrifice. This was a very interesting, well written story that made me felt strong emotions, reading non- stop and skipping sleep hours in order to get to the end. I was so immersed in the story and the development of the plot. I didn’t think that Rosie was going to have a story so good and now that I know about the next book I’m desperate for it.

Rosie Storm, broken hearted and immature, runs away. Being part demon, she enlists the help of someone she's known her entire life to find her a place to pout and sulk over things not going the way she wanted them to. (Make that "to heal") She ends up living with hybrid humans whose freedom from a laboratory came at the cost of agreeing to protect humans from the feral, murderous hybrids they had created years ago. A world of good guys, untrustworthy guys, and really bad guys.
This is a story of honor and of love.
It is not your typical fluffy HEA romance. This is a grittier world, where life is hard won. But the characters, oh, the characters.
Noone writes people better than Danann, noone. Doesn't matter if they have fangs or a bit of demon blood, these people come off the page and live in your mind.
There's the girl living in limbo as she waits for her captive/tortured/dead love. There're the warriors, living on a constant alert state & dealing with the sights & sounds of frequent battles while trying to live a good, happy life. There's the immature woman who is trying to find herself in a world that is so different from her own. Throughout, there is love. Danann understands the many flavors of love in daily life and weaves them into her stories, giving richness and believability. Danann also understands the warrior who will gives his life for his comrades, his family, & his people - the everyday heroes who keep us free.
This is more than just a love story between a boy & a girl. You should read it.

Absolutely loved the book apart from the ending. Totally caught up with the powerful feelings of Rosie and Carnal for each other, which is why i could not understand why the ending had to be so sad. It al.ost put me off reading the seco nd book; Crave. At least that one had a happy ending. Overall it has made me feel mistrustful of the author to deliver as i am anxious she will do it again with the third book Charming!
