The Duchess and the Indigo Child (Her Violet Empire Book 2) Kindle Edition
At just fifteen years old, Veronica Fancourt is already turning heads with her compelling stories, inspired by her vivid dreams. Her latest publication is a gripping tale of heists and cathedrals, entitled "The Countess's Keep." It's captured the imagination of everyone who chances to read it, including someone for whom it is no mere fantasy. Meanwhile, an employee of a coffee roaster in Trieste discovers her bosses are more than ordinary businessmen. She finds herself tied up in a dark warehouse as bait for a sister she insists she doesn't have.
The Duchess, savoring her successful spring, finds herself beset by twin threats to her empire, neither of which she can conquer alone. Her precarious position reawakens the darker impulses she's worked tirelessly to deny. Can she call upon her friends-her only family-to assist her, or will her obsessions drive them out of her life forever?
And why is there another voice in her head?
The Duchess and the Indigo Child is the second installment in the Her Violet Empire series from author Scott A. Clark. This colorful new chapter of the series explores love under pressure, debts of family long forgotten, and coffee...lots of coffee.

Review
At its heart, the book weaves together the lives of two strikingly different women, The Duchess, and teenage literary prodigy Veronica Fancourt. The Duchess is a shrewd, enigmatic figure who thrives on control and influence. Her carefully constructed world begins to crack when Veronica publishes a story that inexplicably mirrors her most guarded secrets. This leads the Duchess to wonder exactly who this young author is and how she obtained information about her most deeply protected secrets.
At the same time, the Duchess faces mounting threats to her empire from the Tessaro family, a powerful mafia group in Trieste, Italy, whose dominance over the coffee trade clashes with her own business ambitions. Ultimately, both women are drawn into a tangled mystery that forces them to confront the cost of the secrets they keep along with the forces that bind them together.
Oh. My. Goodness. I became completely engrossed in this story, and I want to be like the Duchess when I grow up, lol! Her command, her wit, her ability to remain in control under extreme adversity—she is truly a fierce female to aspire to, and she's the one who kept me up all night reading. The Duchess is a deeply complex character, balancing her sharp intellect and strategic prowess with glimpses of vulnerability as her tightly controlled world begins to crack. Her struggles with legacy, loyalty, and power make her a commanding presence and a character who lingers in your thoughts long after the final page.
Veronica brings an entirely different energy to the story. Young, ambitious, and undeniably talented, she is navigating her meteoric rise as a writer while unknowingly entangling herself in a web of intrigue. Her youthful creativity and naivety make her relatable and a strong contrast to the Duchess's calculated composure.
The strength of the secondary characters further elevates this story. From the cunning and dangerous members of the Tessaro family to the Duchess's trusted (and sometimes tested) allies, each supporting character adds richness and depth to the narrative. They bring their own motivations and complexities to the story. The Tessaros add intensity to the plot with their blend of charm, menace, and ruthlessness. The Duchess's inner circle offers a fascinating glimpse into loyalty and the weight of friendship in a life built on secrecy. I loved the baffling dynamic between the Duchess and her employee/sometimes lover, Martin.
Along with the fabulous characters, relevant themes such as identity and legacy give it even more meaning. The Duchess shoulders the weight of her family's history while maintaining the delicate balance of her carefully maintained public persona. Her struggle to preserve control in the face of each mounting threat is fascinating and complex, revealing the immense effort it takes to protect the life she has built. Veronica, on the other hand, is not shaped by a defining past but by the unforeseen consequences of her talent. Her creative voice unexpectedly pulls her into a world of intrigue she could never have imagined.
The indigo motif adds an intriguing mystical element. The hints at unseen connections and the power of intuition make you question whether knowledge is a blessing or a curse, especially since both the Duchess and Veronica are forced to reconcile with new realities that challenge everything they know.
Clark's writing is incredible—his vibrant descriptions bring the settings to life, and the dialogue feels sharp and natural. The pacing is spot-on, letting the story breathe while keeping the tension simmering. There's a satisfying rhythm that pulls you in and keeps you hooked all the way through.
"The Duchess and the Indigo Child" is recommended for fans of mystery, character-driven narratives, and stories with a touch of mysticism and the unknown. I truly hope to see more of the Duchess in the future. For now, since I read the series out of order (not recommended), I'm off to read the first book in Her Violet Empire series, "The Duchess and the Accidental Thief!"

About the author

Scott A. Clark failed English 101 twice and somehow managed to become an author, winning Twin Tales Publishing's 2022 Indie Author of the Year award. When he's not writing, he can't stay out of the clouds: technology, meteorology, and watching aviation videos. Fun fact: Scott believed the entire state of Missouri was fictional until he was nine.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2024I thoroughly enjoyed Clark's first novel, The Duchess and the Accidental Thief, and looked forward to his second book in the series. I was happy to see most of the same well drawn and highly relatable characters resurface here, but really enjoyed how Clark introduced an additional set of characters and locations to his story. Again, he manages to balance his unusual combination of magical realism with state-of-the art technology while setting up and solving his underlying mystery. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to see what else Mr. Clark has in store for us.
