- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019Great read that will keep you on the edge of your seat! Exciting characters!! Loved it!!
Decided to read each book with my 7 yr old grand daughter via face time during the quarantine. So much fun all over again and she loved the suspense!! 😀
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019My middle-grade age nephew and I read and reviewed this book together. We had recently reviewed book 1 in the series, The Heath Cousins and the Moonstone Cave, which he enjoyed. After finishing this 2nd book in the series, I asked him if he liked it and with a big smile on his face said “Yes.”
The Heath Cousins and the Kingsgate Bridge begins with Addie B. anxiously waiting on the arrival of her cousins to England for Christmas. She had recently received a letter from a girl named Mai Li, who was from China. Mai Li had discovered a door into the Garden of Choice, however, she was asked by Gemma to relay a message to Addie of impending danger and then explained how to find another door into the garden that was right there in England. Once Jack, Beanie, and Bodie arrive, she quickly fills them in about the note and together they devise a plan to go through the gate, which turned out to be located closer than they could have hoped for. Then much to their surprise the adults actually fall for their plan, allowing the four cousins to get ready for their next adventure.
Once they go through the gate they quickly see what is wrong. The garden is dead or dying with Gemma nowhere to be found. The only clue is a riddle left to four kids by Gemma. Along their journey they meet those they can trust and those they can’t.
Just as in the previous book, one of the main themes is how the four cousins must learn to trust in each other to find the right path. What I appreciated here in this story is how the children have matured in their relationship with each other. They are no longer arguing or doubting each other, but have learned to trust each others instincts and in what each brings to the table. All the children had a moment to shine, although I kept feeling that Beanie, the middle brother, didn’t have as much time in the spotlight as others.
The length of this book is quite a bit longer than the first in the series, but still short enough that my nephew felt proud of himself for completing it within the timeframe he did. I know that not every child is the same and sometimes the longer middle grade books can be quite daunting to a child, so this book may also be a good option for them.
Nephew Review:
(There may be possible spoilers in this section. He did have other thoughts, but they were too filled with spoilers to include.)
Favorite scene? I liked when we learned about Daiyu’s secret. I didn’t see that coming.
Favorite character? Mai Li – because as a late character she still comes in strong even though she is hurt.
What about not being able to trust everyone they meet? Well, I kinda knew before they did. In the riddle, Gemma told them who to trust and not to trust.
What else did you like? I liked that at the end everybody is safe including Daiyu.
What was the favorite gift given? Bodie had the gift of wisdom and that was the best one because he can see things and hear things no one else can. He can talk to special animals because of how much wisdom he has.
What else do you want people to know about the book? Instead of going to Maine this time they are in England and every time Addie goes over bridge she never even noticed the door that was in the bridge.
Least favorite thing about book? That they actually give away the other entrances to the garden. At the end, she (the author) gives it away in the title of the next book.
Nephew Rating: 4.5
Thank you to the author for providing a copy of the book to review and opportunity to provide an honest review. My nephew really enjoyed being part of this process and I suspect I may be developing a future book reviewer.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2019Addie and her cousins are back and its just before Christmas . Jack, Bodie and Beanie are back to help out . This book takes the gang back to the Garden of Choice this time to help Gemma . After receiveing a strange letter from a young girl in China asking Addie to come back and help Gemma. They gladly go but will they be able to find their way back and will they be able to help Gemma before its too late .
The gang is back and just as cute as ever . Addie takes the lead and helps the cousins through the perils of being a kid . She is sweet and brave and oh so kind . She is fearless though out the whole book . I truly like her she is such a great leader . Jack and Bodie seem to grow up just a little in this book . They become a fearless heros that will help Addie out so much . Beanie well i just love him he is sweet and innocent and just wants to make sure he is home for Christmas . Gemma is a force to be reckoned with she is tough and sweet and Addie's best friend . There are a few new characters that we meet and you will like them or not . But all the characters are very well written
This is the second book in the series and i enjoyed it as much as i enjoyed the first one . Yes i know it is written for children but I really liked it . It was a nice sweet read that will have your kids on the edge of your seats the whole time they are reading . The characters are well written and sweet . You will like them also . - Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023Addie’s cousins come to London for Christmas vacation. They have learned to trust each other so when Addie receives a message from the magical land they don’t hesitate. They return through another gate and find ominous changes as well as new dangers. A great second book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021In the second adventure of The Heath Cousins, we find Addie B. anxiously awaiting the arrival of her cousins because Gemma is in trouble. Addie received a letter written in Chinese and the one word that stood out was Danger. She had to find out what that meant.
Gemma is the kind woman they met in the Garden of Choice in the first book. Once her cousins Jack, Beanie, and Bodie arrive, she fills them in and they agree they need to find out exactly was has happened.
Addie is the leader of the group, but that doesn't mean that Jack doesn't step up and show leadership when it is most needed. Truth be told, they all are leaders in one way or another. Their adventure to the Kingsgate Bridge takes all kinds of turns. Thankfully they have a riddle that Gemma gave them that reminds them of what to look for and keeps them going in the right direction.
You will find magic, mystery, fantasy, problem solving, good and bad, love and forgiveness, and you will be cheering those kids on as they travel to find Gemma and hopefully restore the Garden of Choice to what it was before. The only question is, will their adventure get them back home so they don't miss Christmas?
The characters learn and grown from each experience and also solidifies their relationship with each other. They share a bond that grows with each adventure. They genuinely care about each other.
One of the best things about this book is the high interest level, and the relatively short book that won't intimate reluctant readers. This is a great book to have in our library, and would be an excellent read aloud book as well.
This is definitely a series that is worth reading.
