The Dream To End All Dreams Kindle Edition
A debut novella by Rebecca Ryder
After a painful reminder of a death close to home, Jonathan, a young nurse, finds himself in a depressive spiral. An accident leaves him fighting for his own life and he slips into a coma— only to awaken trapped inside it. With his life support on the verge of being switched off, he must confront his past and decide whether life is worth fighting for— or if it's time to let go.
In a story set on the fragile line between life and death, The Dream To End All Dreams is a philosophical fiction with themes of grief, depression, desperation and hope, offering reflection to anyone who has ever struggled with the meaning of life.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2024“I cannot begin to tell you how awful it is, watching someone come to terms with the inevitable. Death is cruel, so cruel that even just its presence causes suffering. The constant anxiety, sadness, and irritability, knowing that nothing will last forever.”
From sadness comes darkness, realization, discovery and hope. And that is the path of Rebecca Ryder’s premiere novella, The Dream to End All Dreams.
We meet Jonathan, a young nurse, struggling with both the strains of his work and the traumas of his own life. When a patient under his care is nearing death, Jonathan comes face to face with his mortality. The choices he makes will shape the rest of his life.
This is a work of fiction; it is visionary fiction. At 83 pages it is a quick, fast-paced, delightful read. But – fair warning – The Dream to End All Dreams will make you think. The themes in Rebecca’s story will stay with you long after you put it down.
My only complaint, if there is one, is that I want to know more. Hopefully, this is just the start of a full novel or other creative work with this story and characters.
I can recommend this work to anyone who likes imaginative fiction and a really good story. I enjoyed it immensely!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024After his patient, an alcoholic, dies, the nurse realizes he also is not only an alcoholic himself, but a man with no will to live. Mr. Buttons and the child confront him through his journey of worthlessness. This book was made available to me by the author through Voracious Readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024This is a spiritually motivating story!!! After taking care of a dying man, Jonathan, a nurse finds himself going on a drinking spree & sinking into depression. As he went home, he got into a massive vehicular accident which was physically damaging and as a consequence went into a 4 week coma on life support. He was also brain dead.
While unconscious, he was launched into a dream state. It was an allegorical dream full of symbolism and propagating a wealth of aphorisms and adages. He went into his inner thoughts chained to his insecurities and facing his demons as an alcoholic and was grappling with the inevitability of death and the unworthiness of his purpose. He was contemplating ending his existence when he encountered a young boy (representation of his youth) who gave him words of wisdom and dissuaded him from committing the unthinkable. He also met Mr. Buttons a rendition of his older self that gave him reassurance that death was part and parcel of the circle of life that time can't prevent and a person has to live life to the fullest in order to be happy. When he came to from his coma to the surprise of the physicians, he took these lessons to heart and lived accordingly to the principles while recuperating from his injuries.
The book is really an inspirational treatise on how to live positively, learning to accept one's strengths and weaknesses, face the unknown fearlessly and welcome the crests and troughs of the wheel of our being. It delivers an uplifting and encouraging message for the debilitated and dejected.
