The Most Unsuitable Wife (The Kincaids Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 721 ratings

A woman being targeted for a fortune she doesn't know exists; a rancher running out of time; the marriage of convenience that can save them both.

Pearl Parker needs to get her and her two younger siblings she has been raising away from Piper's Hollow TN. Targeted by an unknown person, Pearl is desperate to find someplace far away from those that want to do her and her siblings harm. When she meets Drake Kincaid, he offers a solution that might be the answer to her prayers.

Drake isn’t ready to get married, especially by command. But, now he is in danger of losing the successful family ranch where he has worked most of his life. His parents’ will stipulates he must marry by the age of thirty or forfeit his claim to the ranch. While on a horse buying trip, he meets Pearl.

Pearl and Drake realize that each might be exactly what the other needs. Pearl believes that she will have a safe place in Texas to raise her siblings, with protection from the people that want to harm them. Drake is relieved to meet the marriage clause, allowing him to keep the ranch.

What happens when Drake realizes that Pearl isn't the meek wife he envisioned? Will Pearl blossom or be crushed by restrictions? Can Drake protect Pearl and her family when the people who threatened her arrive in Kincaid Springs? Is there a way love can bloom in this sensual romance with a touch of humor and adventure?

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This book features one of my favorite heroines, Pear Parker. Her story came from a brief story my grandmother told of a girl from her small Tennessee village who actually was born as Pearl is in the book. What happened to the girl later in life I don't know, but I thought she deserved a happily-ever-after. Readers appear to identify with Pearl and her siblings.

From the Back Cover

Wanted: one completely improper bride.

Even if Drake Kincaid had placed such an advertisement in every paper in the country, he couldn't have found a better candidate than Pearl Parker...which is fine with him. His parents' will stipulates only that he marry by his thirtieth birthday to retain his Texas ranch, not that he marry well. He vows to find the most unsuitable woman possible, marry her, and leave her in town with his grandfather. And no one--including Drake's grandfather, the man determined to hold him to the ridiculous provision--could possibly think tall, bossy Pearl with her ragtag siblings and questionable "cousin" Belle will make a good wife. Until Drake realizes that in her startling violet eyes he sees a beautiful woman with a generous soul...

Pearl Parker has raised her two half-siblings. She was able to protect and care for them until recently. Now vandalism and rumor has her eager to escape from the tiny Tennessee village. When Drake Kincaid proposes and agrees to take her siblings with them to Texas, she accepts. She falls in love with the handsome rancher, but refuses to let anyone push her around or aside.

Their life together may not have started with hearts and flowers, but Drake and Pearl will soon learn that real love--with a breathtaking dose of passion--will make their marriage a true romance.

Through a crazy twist of fate, Caroline Clemmons was not born on a Texas ranch. To make up for this tragic error, she writes about handsome cowboys, feisty ranch women, and scheming villains from a small office her family calls her pink cave. She and her Hero live in North Central Texas cowboy country where they ride herd on their rescued cats and dogs. What a very awesome book. One cocky cowboy that must be married by his 30th birthday or he looses his ranch to his Uncle (his mother's brother). By Damn that's not what's going to happen, so he takes a trip with his cousin Lex to a spit of a town to get some horses and try and find a homely looking bride to bring back. Pearl is a beautiful young woman who dresses up homely so she won't get hit on by men in the town and so she can sell her goods that she makes to take care of her younger sister and brother that she took in years ago and a new patient a saloon girl who got beat up and left for dead. She takes no scuff from NO one.

Wait till the battle begins with Drake and Pearl and who is after Pearl trying to kill her and the kids. Will Drake come to his senses and realise just how much she means to him.... a family of his own and that he truly loves her before it's too late?

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves drama, mystery, suspense, romance and above all...Cowboy's!!

Caroline Clemmons gives us a wonderfully romantic heroine, who has good morals and values, but with the spine to stand up for herself. She has had to protect herself and her half-siblings for many years. She is a healer and cares for people less fortunate than herself, i.e. Belle (whose story line sort of develops side by side with Pearl's). Drake Kincaid is mad as a hornet that he has to marry before his 30th birthday to keep his beloved ranch. He doesn't want anything to do with the type of women his Aunt Lily is trying to arrange for him. So on a buying trip for new horse breeding stock, with only weeks to go before his birthday, he stops by to visit his Grandfather's good friend with his cousin Lex. It is here that he has his first encounter with Pearl. The sheriff becomes very ill because of his heart and thus he meets Pearl again when they take him there for her to help heal him.
After his visit to a nearby mansion and stables where, quality breeding stock are located, the light bulb come on in his head as to how he's going to approach Pearl to see if he can help them escape the area and their unknown tormentors, if she will help him by marrying him so he can keep his ranch. He did it mainly to "cook his grandfather's goose" for enforcing the provisions of his parent's will. And the rest of the story develops so well, with lots of action, suspense and romance between Pearl and Drake, but also between Lex and Belle. I highly recommend this read. I'm right now reading "The Most Unsuitable Husband" which is Sarah's story and enjoying it a great deal, and Caroline Clemmons wrote me and told me that she's working on the third in this trilogy, which is Storm's story. I can't wait for that because I truly do love Native American Historical Romance stories. Way to go Caroline!

I liked it so much, I immediately purchased Book 2, The Most Unsuitable Husband. These are really good books. I will be reading Book 3 & 4, which are available, too. Good stories and most enjoyable. She is an excellent writer. Three other books that I have read of hers are: Brazos Bride Book 1, High Stakes Bride and Blue Bonnet Bride. Excellent books.

Warning: not for those who have had a miscarriage.
Historical western romance with a bit of mystery. There are a few formatting errors but it is an enjoyable read. It is heartbreaking to learn of how Fannie Pearl was named.
Believable characters, dialogue and story line.

I may re-read this book and look forward to more by this author.

I found this book to be quite good. The story was good, with a lot of color to it. Nice characters and small plot twists that made it really interesting.
Perhaps the only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I couldn't relate entirely with the main characters. The hero was a little selfish for my taste and the heroine's insecurities were not really believable. But I could believe their passion and liked their love story in the end.

I have been looking for another author that writes historical western romance as wonderful as the likes of Dorothy Garlock, Joan Johnston, Jodi Thomas and Lorraine Heath. I am so excited to have found her at last. While writing this, I realized that maybe its because all these authors have ties to Texas. Each of these authors have the ability to develop strong and independent female characters like that of us women of Texas. Women who do what need to be done in order to provide for the health and safety of their families.
I almost missed the chance to discover Caroline Clemmons. I wasn't fond of the description of this book on Amazon. However, when I decide to read a book, its usually based on the reviews. I read the bad reviews first. After reading them for this book, I didn't even need to read the good reviews, I instantly clicked "purchase". The judgmental and not so well hidden prejudiced criticism the negative reviewers felt about the characters told me that this story probably held grit, intrigue and passion. All of which make up a good story. Can't wait to get started making my way reading through all of Caroline Clemmons Books.

A great story with some interesting characters and plot twists and turns. BUT - and for me it is a big but and almost dropped the review to 3 stars - the proof reading errors are constant and annoying. Get it proofread if you can't do it yourself. It has put me off reading any more in this series.
