Forgotten Identity: A Christian Romantic Suspense Novel Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 169 ratings

Who is he really? And why is someone after him?

Mariah Holzman never imagined a whiteout blizzard would sever all communication from the outside world—communication desperately needed for the injured man Mariah finds near her home. Nor did she imagine helping nurse the man back to health would lead to threats and intimidation. As danger escalates and questions rise, Mariah is left to wonder what kind of person she has allowed into her home.

Grant MacGuire never imagined he would wake up one day in a strange cabin, surrounded by strange people, with no memory of who he is or how he was injured. Nor did he imagine his presence would put the lives of those who saved him in danger. As Grant struggles with distorted memories, he wonders if his life is worth the price the Holzman family is paying.

The growing attraction between Mariah and Grant is hindered by Grant’s unknown identity. Is Grant, as the family’s neighbor assumes, a criminal on the run from the law? Or is there more to his identity—and the reason he was attacked—than they realize?

Editorial Reviews

Review

The plot keeps you turning the pages, and just when you think all will be fine for the characters, something happens and everyone's in danger again. With a stellar plot, sweet romance, and edge-of-your-seat scenes, Forgotten Identity is a story for every Christian romantic suspense enthusiast. ~ Madi's Musings Book Review Blog

Forgotten Identity is a page-turner! Not knowing who the male main character's real identity kept me guessing and made this book hard to put down. I love how Penny keeps you wondering who he really is, combining the perfect mixture of clues with suspense to keep the reader guessing. I loved all the characters in the book. And I especially enjoy the warmth of love between the family members. I love how Penny's books always focus on the love of a family, not just romantic relationships. But if you love romantic tearjerkers, this book has plenty of clean, wholesome romance, too! ~ Erin Synder, reader and reviewer

I really enjoyed Forgotten Identity, a wonderful, suspense-filled mystery. It kept me on the edge of my seat.  I hope Penny Zeller will continue with her wonderful mysteries. ~ Cynthia, avid reader

"Mariah inclined toward him. “Are you from there, maybe?” If he was, that would certainly narrow down their search in determining his identity. “I don’t know. I can’t remember.” “That has to be frustrating, but Mom says it’s good news that you are pretty coherent overall. You’re actually doing quite well, considering what you went through. We weren’t sure you’d make it at first. And now you’re talking, eating, and your eye looks a lot better.” All the truth. God was healing George." When her dog discovered a shoe when they were out for a walk, Mariah was surprised that an unconscious man was almost hidden in the snow. When she manages to get him home, she and her family try to keep him safe. But that proves to be a struggle since they might need to keep themselves safe from this unknown man who had lost his memory. How can they find out the truth? This story revolves around a single mom, her precocious (and enjoyable children), her mom, some neighbors and an unknown stranger. The situation seemed plausible. The love story that slowly developed still felt a bit quick at the end since the two were strangers. But that was fine. The suspense aspects were strong since one was never quite sure what was going on. Because kids were involved, that also raised the intensity. The faith element was strong and satisfying. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I would say that some of the plot did get a bit repetitive. Similar situations happened over and over again. I think if one could cut out about 50 pages, the book would be better. The book might be loosely connected to other titles by the author, but it could be read as a stand-alone.

“Lord, help me. Help me not be the man I think I am. Please.”

I knew Penny Zeller pens historical westerns, but before reading Forgotten Identity, I didn’t know she writes and excels at romantic suspense! Don’t miss this one, if you like romantic suspense!

What’s so great about this novel? So many elements. The first line, for starters. “Of all the days for the dog to run off.” Immediately, the reader feels sympathy for the overburdened heroine, Mariah Holtzman, and you want to see why it’s such an awful day.

I would be lying if I didn’t say that the children and the dog play an important part of the story. Zeller uses the children she creates for Mariah to show us Mariah’s character and George(Grant)’s as well. She also uses them for humor, and boy, do they come through!! The kids decide to call their rescued unidentified visitor, “George Washington.” Since Presley, 4, and Jordan, 7, like to talk to George, George asks Presley if she knows his last name. ( He can’t remember anything.) To which she replies, “You mean like I have three names. Presley Ann Holzman. Your three names are George Ann Washington.” “George Ann Washington?” The girl bobbed her head. “Yes. We will only use your second name for when you’re in trouble.” I was laughing up a storm, always glad when the children brought humor into the dangerous situation.

The story is very realistic. Mariah is a divorced, single mom, living with her mother and two young children. She edits books for a job, so she seems very relatable. A bad snowstorm occurs on the mountain, causing the cell and internet service to be lost, just about when Mariah and Jordan find George. Mariah’s and her mother’s cabin is totally isolated by the storm from town.
When various and threatening visitors come to their house looking for their “brother” or their “friend,” how long can Mariah hide their very sick visitor? Mariah’s neighbor is an ex-policeman, who is very suspicious of George as little details emerge. Who is George? Is he as dangerous as the people looking for him? Can he and Mariah guard their hearts until they know his true identity and character? A thrilling story till the end!

I especially loved the way that faith is ensconced in the story. I love the way George seems influenced by Mariah’s faith. I also love the way that in an impossible situation, God brings comfort to Mariah through His Word.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

    Notable Quotables:

“George compared his mind to a web of wires that had become unhooked from their power source.”

“His life was about to change and he knew not one ounce of what his future held. But God did. And he would have to rest in that, as difficult as it was.”

“What did people do without the Lord to get them through the crazy, evil times of the present culture?”

Loved the characters and setting and the suspense! I usually like “Hallmark-type stories” but I loved the suspenseful addition to this story, and definitely recommend this book for its romance, suspense, and Christian content!

Great suspense and great plot. Characters were solid and memorable. Loved the kids. It had enough hints to the truth behind "George's" identity, but hidden enough to be a good mystery. Highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars definetly going on my re-read list
Reviewed in Germany on April 17, 2025
Mariah lives in a remote mountain town with her two children and her mom. She moved back in with her parents after an ugly divorce.
Now, a blizzard is closing in and her dog Nosy had decided to run off into the woods just as the storm was closing in. With her son by her side she desperately tries to catch up to Nosy to bring him back home. Little did she know where or rather to whom Nosy would take them out in the cold. Next to a ravine they discover an unconscious man severely injured lying in the snow. Would she be able to help him?
and would she be helping a crimimal or an innocent man?

I did not want to put the book down, definitely going on my re-read list for it's story that is the ideal mixture of thrill, love, faith and a little bit of laughter (especially thanks to Mariah's kids - they are adorable and unintentionally funny - just as kids often are) and most real aspect of the story is how often Mariah and her mom had to do the laundry.

If you enjoy suspenseful romantic tales ingrained with faith, this book is a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Suspense
Reviewed in Australia on January 14, 2025
After Reading Penny Zeller's first Romantic Suspense novel last year I was keen to read this one. I wasn't disappointed. This one is even better. The suspense is stronger and the sense of danger is there.

The book starts with a curious dog called Nosy because he is nosy and often into mischief. Mariah and her son Jordon are trying to catch Nosy when he stubbles on to someone in the snow. With a blizzard expected they need to get the man into the cabin out of the weather.

This is where the story starts and we find out the stranger has lost his memory and one of the kids decides his name. Not going to say more cos I don't give away story lines. But it is cute. Mariah has Jordon aged 7 and Presley aged 4 who I have to say are scene stealers.

There are people looking for the stranger but Mariah has a bad feeling about them so keeps him secret. It's around here the suspense is starting. The drama and suspense builds throughout the story and has a satisfying climax. We learn early on who the bad guys are which is common in a Suspense there are surprises. I like that this is more a straight suspense with romance rather than a mystery suspense.

The story reads well and is fast paced to the point even being a longer book I was reading faster than I often do. I just didn't want to put it down. This is a stand alone but I really hope the author keeps writing this genre.

Great book to start the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR - Kept me guessing!
Reviewed in Canada on January 21, 2025
Amnesia, if written correctly, can be a powerful storytelling tool…and author Penny Zeller uses it like a boss! The genius part of her skill is that (1) the amnesia suffered by her protagonist has consequences and (2) the amnesia is used not just to keep secrets from her readers - it drives 65% of the story!!!!

This new-to-me author weaves an incredible web of suspense and intrigue, adeptly combining heart-stopping suspense with the fragility of memory. Zeller examines who we really are when we’ve lost our sense of self and keeps her readers eagerly turning pages to uncover the truth.

As ‘George’ works on finding out who he is, how and why he was near death in Mountain Springs during a blizzard, readers become part of the mystery. Zeller doesn’t just hide what the protagonist knows, but also what they had known at some point. She pulls in other characters and readers with ‘George’s’ fractured, blocked and inaccurate memories begging us to believe each clue in an effort to lead us closer to the truth. Zeller is king at controlling how much information she portions out to her readers, expertly toying with our expectations and assumptions. I’m looking forward to reading another book by this author.
