Sue Bavey (writing as S. Bavey) is an English Mum of two, living in Massachusetts, USA since 2003 with her family.

Her debut: “Lucky Jack (1894 - 2000)" is her grandfather, Henry John Rogers’ award-winning biography. Rogers lived with her family when she was born until she was six years old and then again in later life. He was her father’s father, but her mother diligently collected the newspaper columns he dictated to a local reporter, at the age of 103 and kept them in scrapbooks in her attic, where they gathered dust and yellowed over time. A few years ago Sue found all the scrapbooks and wanted to get all of those stories into a book for her kids to read. That was the germ of an idea which – thanks to her having time during the Covid lockdown – has now resulted in the biography of Jack Rogers being written.

"Kookaburras, Cuppas & Kangaroos" tells the story of Sue's mother, Elizabeth Isle, who emigrated to Australia in 1960 for three years. It is told mostly through letters home and travel diaries.

"A Yorkshire Lass: The Early Years" is the prequel to "Kookaburras, Cuppas & Kangaroos" and tells the story of Elizabeth Isle's childhood in Yorkshire during World War 2 and thereafter until she decided to emigrate to Australia in 1960.

"Daydreams: The Stories and Poems of John Cornelius Rogers" is a collection of her late father's memoirs and poetry. She collected these and chose the ones she wanted to present and in which order. Then she transcribed them, which was quite a task as her father wrote in pen or pencil on loose sheets of paper without any page numbers. He also had difficult to read handwriting, making it an even more challenging task.

"An Icelandic Adventure: One Family's Quest for Puffins, Pleasure and Perfect Pizza" is a mini travel memoir I wrote after a visit to Iceland with my family during the lava flows of 2024.

The other books on her profile are anthologies which contain short stories and memoirs, including experiences moving from England to USA and other travel stories.

Interesting experiences consisted of 24-hour daylight, waterfalls galore, and a nail-biting super jeep trip up a mountain onto the largest glacier. I wanted to go to Iceland really badly, and I felt like I got to see it through their eyes!

Iceland is probably not a country most of us have visited, or contemplated visiting, but after reading Sue's book you may change your mind. Unlike Sue's previous books (which I've loved), this is a personal memoir of a family trip to Iceland. Not only do you get to travel around the island with her, her husband and two older kids and enjoy the various places they visit, Sue provides lots of interesting facts and history, along with Icelandic pronunciations. Not the easiest language to get your tongue around! Most appreciatively, there are photos at the end of each chapter, which has saved me multiple trips to Google, to see these fascinating places. From lava fields to waterfalls, flowers to foxes, Sue's descriptive prose takes you along with them. There's a useful index at the end of the book, with links to the places they visited and stayed, if you do decide to follow her footsteps. A fabulous read, and definitely recommended.

I vicariously experienced the author’s multi-day adventures through Iceland with her family. I love that she and her family toured many places on her trip. She also incorporated knowledge she either gained on the trio or researched to accentuate the story. This little book will certainly make the reader desire a similar adventure through Iceland, and the author included links to each place they visited in their travels.

This book is a wonderful travel memoir. There are so many AI-generated travel guides flooding the markets these days, that I'm always happy when I find a travel book written by someone who actually traveled to the place! I would have liked for the pictures to be more integrated. As I read, I found myself thinking, "I wish there was a picture to go with this." Then I would get to a section that was flooded with pictures and wonder, "What was the story behind this?" Integrating the pictures throughout the narrative would have been more effective, but overall, I think it is a great read!

Author S. Bavey took her readers on a 7-day trip along with her family in An Icelandic Adventure. It was a whirlwind excursion as they visited glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, lighthouses and volcanic craters while always hoping to see the elusive puffin. She did not see one but she shared local tales of the scary 12 Yule Lads, ogresses and trolls which kept the children in line. She added pictures at the end of her chapters which included a statue of the famed Leif Erickson and The Bridge Between Two Continents.

The island's cuisine included delicious crepes served with whipped cream, strawberries and bananas, pizza margaritas and other tasty choices. They saw lava shows, gained insight into the sheep farming, fishing and eider ducks The recent volcanic eruptions almost made them miss the best and last trek to the Blue Lagoon spa spot. Her superb writing sent me to YouTube to take a few Iceland trips to join in on the fun. A must read!

This isn't your typical travel book. But it is the detailed experience of the Baveys family when they visited Iceland. I haven't visited Iceland yet, but this book gives us the preliminary information needed to really enjoy the country and take advantage of what makes Iceland both unique and intriguing. The narrative is well-written, delving into the island's history, culture, and natural disasters. Throughout the book are photos. I also liked the quotes at the beginning of each chapter which I found fascinating and enriching.

This family adventure is full of exciting moments, from endless daylight and breathtaking landscapes to thrilling activities. I found the book funny and entertaining, with awesome pictures that really brought the experience to life. Some of the places were tricky to pronounce, but it just added to the charm of the locations. There’s no shortage of excitement throughout the family's journey, and the author’s commentary was both funny and interesting.
