The Lies We Tell: A Darker MM Romance Kindle Edition
"Lies destroy – especially the ones we tell ourselves. But reality can destroy too, revealing a truth that can shake you to the core."
BLURB
Nate
My marriage was done. The criminal I was chasing was giving me the runaround. I was doubting everything, wondering where my life was going.
I’d given everything to the job, but it had cost me everything, including my family and my home.
When Oliver Farnham gave me the lead I’d been looking for, I couldn't pass up the chance to put a murderer behind bars.
I’d promised to protect him, and I always kept my word. If he would give up his life as he knew it, to get justice for a man he never knew, I’m sure I could do what it took to keep him safe.
What I didn’t expect was to love him and if that meant giving my life to keep him alive, it was the price I’d pay.
Ollie
How much was my life worth? That was the question I asked myself. Was it worth losing everything for? Damn right it was. I’d give up my identity if it meant keeping ME safe.
Witnessing a murder and running away from the life I knew, it should have been a difficult decision, and if my ‘boyfriend’ knew that I was the one that had given him up, I’d have a target on my back for the rest of my very short life.
Then I met Nate. He’d sworn to protect me in exchange for my testimony, but the closer we became, the more I realised I’d give it all up to be with him.
I just wondered if he’d do the same for me.
The Lies We Tell - a gritty, dark MM romance featuring plenty of spice, steam, an age gap, and bisexual awakening. This is a standalone novel.

About the author

Alex is an MM author from the NW of England. She's married with three grown-up sons and two Tamaskan dogs, her night time companions when she's writing into the early hours!
She writes gritty, realistic, mainly contemporary romance but always with a happy ever after.
Her tagline? Finding Forever - One Chapter at a Time.
An avid reader, she started writing one lunch break, writing her first book in no time at all. From there, her passion grew and The Nava Dance Studios series was born. Her writing style has changed, a darker feel creeping into her work and while she doesn't profess to be a dark author, she covers some socially dark subjects.
She'd love to move somewhere sunny with a beach view, continuing to write about her perfectly, imperfect men.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 20234.5 ⭐️Another enjoyable and exciting story from this author! Love the thrill and suspense in this one.
Both Nate and Ollie steals my attention from the start, especially Ollie. He’s kinda snarky, but a bit broken and vulnerable. Nate is a tough cop, who suddenly starts to notice a man for the first time. And he’s so caring and gentle 💛 They just belong with each other.
The first part of the story we get to know the men separately, and I liked that. Cause we get their whole background story, and the whole background for why they meet at all. When they do meet I feel the connection between from the start.
It’s not your typical romance where the love story is very in focus, but we follow them and get to experience them getting to know each other.
There’s no drama for the drama, no “am I gay” freak out. Just thoughts and feelings around it…
I definitely liked the side characters, and I’m always a fan of the dark themes and triggers in a book.

So... I liked the story. I liked the characters. But there were moments that missed some things and just were cringey for me. I feel like some added details with those interactions would have prevented that for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2023This is the first time reading this author and I found it to be a pretty good book. It's definitely not what I would call "dark". It's really more of a slow burn crime drama, and while it does mention some torture and killing, it's not very graphic or detailed. I've actually seen crime shows on television that were more explicit and I was a little disappointed with this. The characters were interesting enough and the world building sufficient, but neither were particularly memorable and I kind of skimmed through parts that were drawn out and not very engaging. I think that with some work and additional scenes it could definitely have more potential but as if stands, it was just ok. I'd give it a 3.5* stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2023I have read all of Alex J. Adam's work thus far and while I have enjoyed all of her books thus far, The Lies We Tell has risen to the top of my favorites from her. It is a little darker than her other books, but it truly keeps the reader engaged. Thankfully I began reading this on a Friday night because it kept me up way into the early morning hours as I had to find out what was going to happen with Ollie and Nate. I truly enjoyed the grittiness the character of Nate possesses and Ollie's warrior sprit which makes him more endearing. I also felt both characters had such vulnerability which lends realness to the story and ultimately leads to a beautiful ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2023He had a light dusting of freckles across his smooth nose, so faint you had to be really close to see them. The long dark eyelashes fanning over his slightly tanned skin matched the colour of his hair, which was sticking up in places where he’d been lying on it. It looked soft, almost baby fine. Had I ever looked at a man the way I did him? I’d never once had the attraction I felt towards him, and it unnerved me."
The Lies We Tell: A Darker MM Romance is the first book I've read by Alex J. Adams. I love a good MM cop romance and the blurb on this one had me intrigued. This is Nate and Ollie's story.
Nate is a hard-working 38 year old cop, struggling with the end of his marriage. Ollie is the 25 year old witness to the gangland murder of an undercover cop, and also the ex-lover of the killer. Nate is the DI charged with protecting Ollie, as the police race to solve the murder and bring charges before a hit can be made on Ollie. And along the way both men develop feelings.....
Tropes:
🖤MM romance
🖤Bi-awakening
🖤Age gap
🖤Cop/witness
🖤Dark themes (kidnap and torture)
🖤HEA
This one's more about the story than the steam, which makes a nice change.
3-3.5 stars
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2025This one for me was hard. I loved the concept, the start of it, but sometimes the execution of the story was missed or rushed through. It wasn't my favorite but I would read this author again. It wasn't twisted or dark, but was. It straddled the line.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2023Going in, I knew this book was to be a bit different than her other books. But her attention to creating the most interesting characters is still all there. And that drew me right in to a story I wasn't 100% certain was my style. And I loved it! Nate and Ollie are amazing! And the storyline kept me hooked to the end.
Absolutely another 5⭐ review for Alex from Me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gritty, page turner
The Lies We Tell by Alex J Adams is a suspenseful, action packed story about a young man on the run and the older detective sworn to protect him. This book has some of my favorite tropes such as instant attraction, age gap, forced proximity, and bi-awakening so I was instantly hooked.
After witnessing his boyfriend commit a murder, poor Ollie is on the run. He knew his boyfriend Gary was involved in some pretty shady dealings but never guessed he’d go that far.
Detective Nate Decker is a workaholic who has been trying to take Gary down for years, losing his wife to another man in the process. When his undercover officer is found dead, it leads him to Ollie, and he finally has the evidence he needs to put Gary away for good. That is, if he can find Gary, keep Ollie alive long enough to testify, and fight his instant attraction to the sexy younger man.
As the story unfolds from there, Alex’s writing had me quickly turning pages. As their undeniable chemistry builds, resulting some sizzling scenes as Nate gives in to the idea of being with a man, Alex really built the tension between them, escalating their encounters at a believable pace.
As things come together with the investigation, Alex J Adams threw in a plot twist, leading to some harrowing scenes. She had me gasping and holding my breath like I was right there among action! But never fear. Nate and Ollie do get their well deserved happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars 😍
This is another interesting read from this author. I wish it had been a bit longer but it’s a great length for a holiday read if you are in the mood for something with a bit more drama. It’s set in Manchester and I enjoyed the storyline….perfect if you are a fan of cop shows on tv. Ollie and Nate are both well written and this ticks the boxes for age gap, bi awakening and close proximity.

Nate and Ollie’s age-gap story was full of intrigue, angst and some steam and easily kept me hooked from the first page to the last. This author is fast becoming one of my favourites and i highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars brilliant read
This is a well written dark romance. Plenty of drama and steam to keep me happy. I do love a bi-awakening and this one was superb. This is the first book I have read by this author and will not be the last.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark and suspenseful
This is the first book I have read from Alex, and it certainly won't be the last. This book was dark and gritty and had all the things I want in a dark romance.
Ollie was such a good character he was so sassy even though his life definitely wasn't what he wanted it to be.
Nate was the perfect man for Ollie. I really liked Nates character. Im a sucker for a Bi-Awakening, and Nates was perfect! It came with no drama! He realised he wanted Ollie, and when he realised he wanted him back, he just went with it!
I really enjoyed the whole concept of the story. I've never read a book like this before, and I was hooked from the beginning. The slight mystery element with some parts of the story had me guessing throughout the book.
The writing in this book was really good. The character development and world building were phenomenal. I always like reading books based in the UK, especially when the author is from the UK it always makes them feel more authentic!
Im really looking forward to reading more books from Alex.
