Churchill and Roosevelt: The Big Sleepover at the White House: Christmas 1941-New Year 1942 Kindle Edition
Many readers may not have known that Winston Churchill came to visit Franklin Roosevelt two weeks after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt insisted that Winston sleep in the White House. The two men had much in common—more than they realized, as the reader will discover. There are plenty of other surprises along the way—a chance encounter with Adolph Hitler, a fishing expedition, a shared mentor, a favorite movie, a movie producer spy, Commander Ian Fleming’s visit to the Oval Office, and canine diplomacy to name but a few.
During their time together, Churchill and Roosevelt shared many private moments as they forged a bond of friendship, trust, and cooperation that enabled them to defeat their countries’ common enemies. How their relationship evolved is dramatized and personified in this book.
Most of the narrative is based on documentation, but what went on behind the view of the public eye is subject to the imagination. The author fleshes out the story by coloring it with conversations that may have occurred over the course of three weeks but that are not necessarily provable. Lastly, the writer sets out to humanize these two epic leaders of their time and perhaps the century. He reveals not only their fears and tears but also their joys, humor, passions, temperaments, and schemes. He attempts to “break into their minds” as the two men join together intent on saving the Western world.
The author is a Proud Supporter of the Fallen Warriors Memorial in Houston (www.fallenwarriorstexas.org) and America’s National Churchill Museum in Fulton, Missouri (www.nationalchurchillmuseum.org)
About the Author
James Mikel Wilson resides in Houston, Texas. He has been happily married for forty-eight years and has a son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. Hopefully the latter, as they grow older, will be inspired by Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt’s compassion, faith, resiliency, and sense of the greater good as told in Churchill and Roosevelt: The Big Sleepover at the White House. He could not resist writing this book as he begin to imagine the time these two great leaders resided, worked, and forged their union at the White House for almost three weeks during Christmas 1941 to early New Year 1942. This book is a Proud Supporter of Fallen Warriors Memorial (www.fallenwarriorstexas.org) and The National Churchill Museum (www.nationalchurchillmuseum.org).
Jim worked for forty-two years as a sales and marketing manager for Caterpillar Inc. and related companies in North and South America as well as Europe and Africa. His sense of geography and history is incorporated into this book as well as another titled Paw Tracks Here and Abroad: A Dog’s Tale, Corabella Press, 2014.
Paw Tracks, written for “children of all ages,” tells the true adventures of a stray dog who travels the equivalent of almost halfway around the world, escapes four times, and possesses a strong will to survive. In addition to the special bonding that occurs between humans and animals, it teaches some geography, a little history, and the importance of good veterinarian care, nutrition, grooming, and thoughtful kennel boarding. The book is available from most traditional sources.
Snickers, the principal character in the book, shares in first-person voice her marvelous and weirdly true adventures over a twenty-two-year lifespan. Paw Tracks is a Proud Supporter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (www.aspca.org) missions related to adoption and animal abuse. The Peoria Journal Star and the ASPCA have posted favorable write-ups in their publications.
As a hobby, the author collects books written by U.S. presidents and first ladies.

Review
The humanizing of these men as you place them in historical context, is incredibly moving. Also powerful, and what makes it stand out, is the way their conversations range far and wide, giving context to so may connections I never knew existed. Matthew Arkin, California and New York. Author, and American film, television, and theater actor and educator.
I read it word by word, trying to absorb the importance of Churchill and Roosevelt's conversations and the effect they made on my life. Both were leaders, actors, and role players. Their decisions have shaped our world since that time. Geoerge Rootes, Houston. Academy of Distinguished Alumni, University of Missouri.
The two-person dialogue kept my attention, and some of the details were new to me. If this work also became a play, I can just picture Roosevelt sitting on stage in of those old-time wheelchairs, and Churchill in a big overstuffed chair with his smoking jacket and cigar. Excellent job! Charley Crew, San Diego. Past president Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo.
So many things I didn't know about them. I found your book refreshing and entertaining. I liked the approach of the two monologues. Walter McDonald, Arlington Heights. President The McDonald Group, Inc.
In the hands of the right artistic director, this also has the potential to be a brilliant play. Douglas Davis, Brooklyn. Off-Broadway actor.

About the author

James Mikel Wilson writes historical fiction and narrative nonfiction. He is the author of five books. His most recent one, "The Cherry Tree Weeps for Me: A Quest for The Dawn of Peace" was published on October 31, 2024. It tells the compelling story of Japan's birth as a democracy, followed by its loss and restoration through the lens of a man who accepted the difficult task of restoring friendships between two former enemies.
As a 12-year-old Japanese immigrant living in the New York City YMCA at the turn of the 20th Century, Takashi Komatsu was among the least likely to eventually have such a profound impact on Japan's emergence after WW II as an enduring democracy and one of America's best trading partners and allies. This book is a Proud Supporter of Monmouth College (Illinois).
"Churchill and Roosevelt: The Big Sleepover at the White House" won the 2018 Author Academy Award in historical fiction. A London playwright has converted it into a stage play. It is about the three weeks these two great men spent at the White House from Christmas 1941 to early New Year 1942, creating a bond of friendship and plotting grand strategy to defeat their common enemies. The author created the work as a two-man monologue to make it read less like a history book. Although readers know the outcome of World War II, the characters in the book interact in the present tense and do not.
"The Big Sleepover" is a Proud Supporter of the Fallen Warriors Memorial in Houston, TX and the National Churchill Museum in Fulton, MO. Wilson was one of just five authors from around the world invited to sign books at the National Churchill's 50th Anniversary in 2019.
"Ghosts of Presidents Past-A Reckoning." Twenty-three past presidents respond to the siren call to confront the fictional incumbent President Daniel Hands. Hands violates almost all decorum associated with the world's most esteemed office. Each visitor shares relevant successes, confesses a few regrets, and leaves POTUS with a warning. This book combines historical fiction, political parody, and satire. It was written with a nod to Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol." Dickens's and Wilson's books are statements of their times. The work is a Proud Supporter of NPR and Houston Public Media.
In addition to the above books, Wilson has authored two others "Paw Tracks Here and Abroad: A Dog's Tale" published in late 2014 and "Mr. Froggy's Dilemma" published in late summer 2018.
"Paw Tracks Here and Abroad" was originally written for Wilson's grandchildren but friends encouraged him to share it. Age appropriate from eight to adults, it is the true story of a stray dog who wanders into the Wilson's lives and brings them joy for another twenty years.
Snickers, the heroine of the story, tells of her adventures and observations in first person voice. Each of the eighteen chapters begins with a delightful illustration by Tod Gilpin. Along the way the reader gains useful information about animal training, playtime, travel with dogs, grooming, nutrition, animal behavior, and aging gracefully. Snicker's vet for almost twelve years contributed to the content and wept when she passed away.
Wilson's wisdom and insights were gained over the fifty plus years in which he owned five dogs. Those dogs and the many others he knew through his friends enabled him to write this story with sensitivity, humor, and appreciation for the unique role dogs play in the lives of humans. Wilson and his family are proud supporters of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals©. The ASPCA has blogged about the book and also included an interview with the author in their quarterly magazine. Also, the Peoria Journal Star did a feature article on Snickers in their spring special edition on pets.
"Mr. Froggy's Dilemma" is a true story about a frog badly in need of rescuing. Mr. Froggy gets into trouble over his head and too big for his flippers. The book invites the young reader to answer some questions and to conduct outside research to augment the tale. Interactive windows of opportunity emerge to explore and discuss nature, science, climate change, the environment, and fear of the unknown. One feature makes Mr. Froggy rare. He's a blue bull frog! For several months, Amazon books recorded Mr. Froggy's as #1 out of 29 Hot New Releases in its genre.
During Wilson's forty-three years with Caterpillar, Inc., he traveled throughout North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Afterwards, he consulted for eight years in the field of top tier business practices for industrial distribution. His appreciation for geography, nature, history, cultures, international politics, and adventure are incorporated into all five books. He lives in Houston, TX and has been happily married for over fifty years to Kathy. They have a son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
Wilson collects books signed by US Presidents and First Ladies, Lionel Trains, Indian artifacts, and old canes. As stated, he is a dog lover. Also, an inveterate gardener.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019This book is done by having little snippets of Roosevelt and Churchill speaking about their relationship in the first person. Each speaks in a series of back and forth monologues. Wilson acknowledges some of what might have been said is speculation. However the book does tell in this amazing style this important bonding that took place between these two world leaders and includes the major players such as Hopkins.
This is history told at its best- accessible, engaging, and although we know the ending or part of it, one reads each word as if this were fiction with the outcome in doubt.
I read a ton of history and write about it. This book does what great biography and history does- it makes the past jump off the page and accessible to the reader. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in these two great leaders or history in general. Hope we will see James Mikel Wilson publish future history.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2015This is a wonderful book! It illuminates a moment in world history and the unique relationship between Roosevelt and Churchill by focusing on a specific moment in time, namely, the three weeks Churchill spent at the White House in 1941-1942. I would not at all be surprised if this book is adapted into a play. Wilson has opened up a fascinating page in our history!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2015I read The Big Sleepover with interest and fascination. The unique presentation enables you to see the times with a different perspective. I have read a great deal about these two men and a quite aware of this three week period. But presenting ti as a series of monologs adds a different way of seeing what I already knew. It tales it out of journalism and makes the dueling monologs into aa much richer conversation. A neat trick. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2016Unique presentation of two history making giants shaping the world. Firmly rooted in fact and "fleshed-out" with what may be fictional thoughts and conversations. The end result is an entertaining, enjoyable history. I feel like I now know these two great men. I really enjoy reading good history books and this one has been one of the best!
