- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024Sesi Says Goodbye to Granny is a beautiful mother-son collaboration by Robbie and Michael Cheadle. Together they have written a delightful story about Sesi, an elephant calf, who is worried about the matriarch leaving the herd. Young Sesi questions that if her treasured Granny leaves, who will guide and take care of her family? In this charming tale, we learn about African Bush Elephants and are pleasantly entertained with exquisite images and artwork by Robbie Cheadle. I bought the paperback and was captivated by the vivid colors and stunning visuals with each turn of a page. My fascination with elephants began years ago, so it was interesting to learn more about the magnificent animals. Sesi’s adventure is a real treat for children; I can only imagine the curiosity and excitement a child would feel, but honestly, her story is for all ages because of the educational element. If you wonder about Granny and the future of the herd like Sesi does, then you’ll need to purchase your copy, and I highly recommend that you do!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2024“Sesi Says Goodbye to Granny” is a touching story told from the point of view of two young elephants (sister and brother) who must deal with their feelings about life and death when Granny the Matriarch of the herd disappears one day. Sesi’s mother explains that Granny’s time has come, and she has gone to the elephant graveyard.
Even Sesi’s brother Tlou is concerned by the lack of leadership now that Granny is gone. When Aunt Tariro makes her appearance, she comforts the young elephants, reminding them that Granny trained her as her successor.
The author uses soft rhyming story-poetry to tell the story. Limericks are used to introduce the different characters to the readers.
The illustrations are realistic and drawn by the author. The elephant photography is original and also taken by the author. Look for the interesting elephant facts at the end of the book. I’m enjoying this series as it documents the animals of South Africa in a way that all children (and adults) will enjoy. This book could lead to some great conversations with your children and grandchildren.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2024Sesi Says Goodbye to Granny is a lovely children’s South African Adventure. The paintings are beautiful, and the photographs are very expressive. The story is about a young, female African bush elephant calf named Sesi. She is trying to understand why her grandmother, the head matriarch of the herd, has left the herd to go out on her own. Granny is not just special to Sesi and her family, but as the herd leader, she makes sure the herd get food and water, rest, abides by safety rules, organizes the routine, and mounts a defense against predators. Sesi and her brother Tariro learn as Granny is aging and unable to handle her responsibilities as well, it is time to turn the leadership over to her daughter (Sesi’s aunt) who has been trained to take over the responsibilities to keep everyone safe. The story is told in a very natural and loving way. There are also many interesting facts for children to learn about the elephant’s physiology and social habits. I look forward to sharing it with my grandchildren.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024Sesi says goodbye to Granny is a beautiful book for young readers. The authors, Robbie and Michael Cheadle, a mother-son writing team, tell the African elephants' life and adventure from Sesi the elephant calf’s perspective. Granny, the matriarch, was the herd’s leader for fifty years. She has disappeared from the herd for a while. Sesi was concerned about her and wanted to know who would lead them to find food and water in the desert. Aunt Tariro, Granny’s daughter, revealed that her mother had trained her to be the next matriarch. She was confident in leading the herd into the future adventure.
I’m interested in wildlife and watch nature documentaries often. Elephant is one of my favorite wild animals because of its intelligence. I’ve met Asian elephants in person but haven’t met African elephants. The photography in Sesi says goodbye to Granny is attractive to me. I find the author’s photography and videos of elephants to be exceptional. Robbie also includes her illustrative art. Readers will appreciate the links to the footage of the videos and the informative fun facts about elephants.
I received an ARC, and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024“Sesi says goodbye to Granny” is an engaging story for young readers and their parents and an educational one too. Sesi is concerned her beloved Granny is leaving the herd and her leadership role. The tale gently describes the change coming and how the herd will carry on. Elephant facts were shared, many unknown to me. I have always had a soft spot for elephants, so the learning part was enjoyable, but the artwork and photography captured my heart. I usually read books on my Kindle. This time I read the book on my cell phone, which was a tremendous bonus seeing everything in vivid color and detail. The book’s blend of art, facts, and fiction charmed me as an adult, and I envisioned the delight a child would find in its pages. Great gift for children and family.
