Desulti: An Epic Fantasy (Spirit Song: Rebels Rising Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

“The authors offer a huge array of elements that contribute to a fully textured world that feels immersive and alive. We are brought into a complex society shaped by history, politics, art, and complete disparity of wealth and power, with no greater example than at a wedding where the economic prowess of the Volloch lords is on full display.” –Readers Favorite

The tyranny of the Vollen Empire is written in the scars on Tove's face. But a chance encounter with Brie, a Desulti assassin, awakens a hunger in Tove. She'd seen Brie fight. The Desulti was a small woman, like Tove, but Tove doubted Brie ever felt small. Not like Tove did. When Brie offers her a chance to be the first Alle'oss woman to join the Desulti, she can't believe her luck. But the secretive order of women is not the haven she expects. Can Tove find what she seeks, or is she a pawn in a scheme that could end her life and destroy the Alle'oss rebellion?

Amazing!

Amazing!
Book Review Day! Desulti Ross Hightower Desulti is a prequel story to a deeper series but this novel can be read as a standalone and then you can dig in more story from there! This is a story for you if you enjoy a cast of strong willed female characters both heroines and villians. The author really flexes his creative muscles with a story this intricate and the world building shown in between these pages is a master class on how to pull readers into place of escapism! The political intrigue of this journey is very complex and volatile and is played out over the course of the story with many twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes with jaw dropping moments! Lots of rich culture is created and historical background woven in to give the characters a feeling of depth and connection. This a read not to miss!

In Ross Hightower’s and Deb Heim’s Desulti, an epic fantasy that is part of the Rebels Rising series, Tove elevates to one of those indelible characters who stays in the reader’s memory long after the book has been closed. Her utter lack of guile, her wondrous instincts, and her kind vulnerabilities serve as a terrific counterpoint to the nest of intrigue that is Desulti society. Upon first glance, life among the Desulti appears to be the ideal environment for Tove to thrive, one of defiant women from many classes who have made their own place in this world filled with prejudices. Unfortunately, those independent and unbiased values have faded, particularly under the leadership of Lyssa. As the first Alle’oss woman to join the Desulti, Tove confronts challenges well beyond the shunning that greets her arrival.
As with Argren Blue, Hightower and Heim have delivered another richly detailed cultural vision, with the layers of the Vollen castes, economic calculations, and social nuances given subtle and wry explorations. That includes elaborate chess moves by the triumvirate of leaders – Lyssa, Siofra, and Nessa – working at cross purposes. True to the best fantasy, Desulti presents resonant echoes of present-day society, particularly the subtle, often paradoxical perceptions of rebellious women. The reader’s evolving understanding of one of those Desulti leaders is heartening.
Hightower and Heim ground this fantasy world in an earthiness that imbues the novel with warmth, particularly through the members of the perceived underclass and through a protective Alle’oss hunter. The Tavern at Ka’ton becomes the scene of intense and occasional joyous moments, not only for Tove, but for numerous young Desulti women she brings along, moments of growth and liberation.
Hightower and Heim manage a rare feat: through the inwardly and outwardly damaged character of Tove, they have infused joy and hope in a hardened, cynical society.

Once again the team of Hightower and Heim have created an immersive fantasy world. What a wonderful read!

Ross Hightower and Deb Heim have crafted a world that feels both vast and intimately personal, skillfully interwoven with themes of history, politics, art, and the stark contrasts of wealth and power. At the heart of this world is Tove, whose face bears a brutal scar—a constant reminder of the Vollen Empire’s tyranny. A chance encounter with Brie, a Desulti assassin, awakens a hunger in Tove to rise above the limitations of her past and prove herself. When Brie offers her a chance to join the secretive order of women known as the Desulti, Tove believes she’s found an opportunity for empowerment. Yet, as she becomes further entangled in the order, she begins to question whether she is truly in control of her fate or merely a pawn in a dangerous scheme that could end her life and destroy the Alle'oss rebellion.

Tove’s emotional growth is the heartbeat of the story, lending it a depth and resonance that lingers. At the beginning, her spirit bears the invisible scars of abuse, leaving her vulnerable and cautious. But beneath her fragility lies a quiet defiance, a spark of strength waiting to emerge. As the journey unfolds, she reclaims her voice and confidence, transforming from a shattered woman into one who learns to fight for herself. The challenges and conflicts she faces force her to confront her flaws, broaden her perspective, and make difficult decisions. Through these hardships and moments of self-discovery, Tove unearths a steady, quiet determination—a strength that, once hidden, now refuses to be ignored. This inner resilience allows her to weather any storm, rising from the ashes of her past and embracing the force she was always meant to become.

While the world-building can initially feel overwhelming, it eventually unfolds into a richly textured landscape that draws the reader deeper into the story. The layers of political intrigue, personal ambition, and shifting allegiances create a constantly evolving narrative, keeping the reader engaged and guessing what will come next. As Tove grows, so too does the world around her, intertwining her personal evolution with the shifting tides of a complex society on the brink of change.

Although there are moments where the complexity of the world-building, multiple plot threads, and large cast of characters might feel overwhelming, the emotional and character-driven core of the story—especially Tove’s transformation—keeps the reader engaged. This is a story that thrives on depth and growth, making it a rewarding read, even with its intricate layers.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

As a female martial artist, I love a good girl power story. It's nice, though, that not all the strong females are good guys. That keeps it real.

Readers will find something of themselves in the complexity of these characters, making them feel the emotional tension more keenly. Tove's uncertainty and hardship leads to a fierce determination, demonstrating strength through adversity, which is a good lesson for teen and young adult readers.

With its immersive world building, expect to get pulled into a new world where the plot keeps you guessing. Even though this book is a prequel, it can easily stand alone if the reader chooses to begin their journey into the Vollen Empire here. It's a great escapist ride!

Desulti is a community of women who have deigned themselves elite and all-knowing, but as it can be said of elitists, their arrogance can sometimes be unpleasant, and in the case of Desulti, downright immoral. Tove is a character whose scars run much deeper than the physical, so having been invited into this world (and you have to be invited to be in it), she enters feeling inferior and in awe of it. Her transformation in this politically convoluted and violent world had me rooting for her throughout. Desulti has all of the elements of an epic fantasy and an ending that is sure to satisfy its readers.
