I first started writing when I was about ten years old. I'd go out into the woods with a notebook, a pencil, and the family dog, Rufus. There was a huge oak tree that had fallen in a storm. Its roots were upended, but they still had enough dirt on them for the tree to leaf out each year. I thought this giant tree was a marvel. I probably liked it so much because I didn't usually climb trees being scared of heights, but I sure climbed this one. Rufus and I kept each other great company until I went up into the tree; then I did my thing and he did his. I wrote really terrible poetry, and he chased rabbits and did other dog-related activities. Sometimes I stayed on the tree for hours, scribbling my thoughts into the notebook. Other times I went home sooner, especially in the winter when the Iowan cold bit my fingers so soon after arriving that writing quickly became impossible.
I later moved to the Deep South and now live in Mobile, Alabama. I've also lived in Salinas, California, and I now go to Prince Edward Island, Canada as much as I can.
I typically don't write suspense or horror type stories although my story "Paybacks" in Two Eyes Open by McKenzie Publishing is suspenseful. Otherwise, you might see many kinds of different work coming from my pen except, perhaps, the poetry I wrote as a child. I think I've learned that I can write stories, even non-fiction, but alas, I am no poet!
In September of 2018 I was also published in Pink Panther Magazine and Ink in Thirds but because those publications are magazines, and not sold by Amazon, they aren't listed here. Pink Panther Magazine is GORGEOUS with loads of artwork, and Ink in Thirds has one of my favorite stories of mine in it -- "The Last" which is a flash piece of under 300 words. Both are worthy publications, and I recommend them both, not merely for my work, but because of the other contents they hold.
Being a writer is something you can't get away from, no matter what job you're working at to pay the bills. And I tried out a number of them, from cooking to bartending, and even a number of years as a pharmacy technician. But there was always a short story or a novel in the works. It took a lot of work, and a few decades, to finally achieve the published author status. Now that I'm there, there's no going back.
I love a good horror novel, which is why I have almost every Stephen King book there is on my bookshelf. My short stories are great for a chill if that's what you're into. Though I only have a few out there so far, I'm doing my best to add to those writing credits.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2020After reading Out of the Cave by MacKenzie Publishing, I couldn't wait to read another anthology from the same publisher.
TWO EYES OPEN is sixteen stories from a diverse group of authors:
RAGE by Amanda Crum: a ghost story which ends abruptly
SOUL CAKES by Chantal Boudreau: supernatural family drama
GLASS PUZZLE by Shelly Macaroy: twisted revenge
URSULA by L.S. Engler: hit a little close to home...my first name is Ursula and, well, I had a "Nick" in college
HOUSE CALL by S.D. Hintz: very disturbing dispute
THE FIRST SNOWFALL by Boyd Reynolds: brutal house hunting
SHOW COOKING - CANNIBAL EDITION by Kev Harrison: dark humor
EYES WIDE OPEN by S.T. Himmonds: historical fiction
OPENING YOUR EYES IS THE MOST PAINFUL THING YOU WILL EVER HAVE TO DO by Tom Johnstone: thought-provoking
NO JOB TOO SMALL by R.A. Goli: watch out for those craigslist ads
THE DYING by Leah O'Sullivan: a great twist on the zombie genre
THE BOATS by Robb T. White: hardcore revenge
PAYBACKS by Leslie Muzingo: one of my favorites
FEEDING STRAYS by Monique Yowza: reminds me of Tales from the Dark Side
WOMEN MUST STICK TOGETHER by Cassandra Williams: bizarre dispute with neighbors
SHEEP AND SNAKES by Billy Lyons: another favorite...solid way to end the anthology
If you're looking for something with variety, there are plenty of entertaining stories within. However, the theme of this anthology isn't as clear as OUT OF THE CAVE. As a result, this seems more like a random collection of shorts than anything else. I hope the publisher returns to whatever formula was used in choosing stories in the previous anthology.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2019Two Eyes Open is a horror collection of sixteen stories featuring mostly psychological horror , only a few have supernatural elements. Here the people are secretly bad or becoming so getting revenge on others. Most of them I did like , but their short length hurt them a lot in my eyes. They all start out great , but then have to end suddenly and ruins the tension that was built up leaving me to think .. OK .. next story then .. Surely this is a problem in most short stories but it really stood out here to me. I'll talk about the ones I liked best.
Rage - A woman begins to a see a ghost , and as her mental problems dealing with this escalate she discovers the real problem in this house .. It's very well written with great inner dialogue. The subject matter was dealt with intelligently and was never insulting to anyone like most stories like this would have done.
Ursula – A man finds the missing love of his life in a mental institution and tries to see her. After being refused he takes matters into his own hands , breaking into it. Like Rage the mental issues are handled well and with more great inner dialogue in a story that keeps you guessing till the end.
The First Snowfall – A couple who every year try to find a house that only appears on the first snowfall of every year , finally do so. It supposedly holds some great treasure within. Bridgette is very manipulative and controlling towards Joshua but the power within the house causes some changes in this dynamic .. Just really well written , and the supernatural story elements were great.
Show Cooking – Cannibal Edition – Prepare yourselves for some gore. Lots of it. After offering to help an old lady struggling with her groceries home , a young man finds she has a man tied up in her home. Brandishing a knife , she tells him to watch her cut him up and prepare him as a meal or she'll do the same to him. Wonderful descriptions of gore if you like that kind of thing. (I do.)
The Boats – Graciela, a Mexican-American girl is bounced around families and homes after her parents die. After finally finding a stable home she becomes friends with a girl , who treats her well despite how others don't. Offering to get Graciela a job as a maid , she instead betrays her and sends her to her father to be pimped out sparking a great and brutal revenge tale.
Mostly a well written collection , some stories ended a bit abruptly in my opinion though. A few touched on some social issues , which while didn't bother me I felt they fell a bit flat. Worth reading overall.
