Flash Fiction Magazine - Issue 1 Kindle Edition
This enthralling anthology of flash fiction features very short stories ranging from a paragraph to one or two pages. Flash Fiction Magazine has compiled a sterling collection of exceptional contemporary examples of this unique fictional form covering a wide range of ideas and genres, from literary to romantic to humorous to horrifying.
Exploring the last moments before a death, the heartache of unrequited love, the sweet high of revenge, or the sad truth about human obsolescence, these brief tales touch briefly but profoundly on who we are, the ways we commit, the ways we move on, the ways we get by—sometimes shocking, sometimes funny, sometimes deeply emotional, and always remarkable.

About the authors
Flash Fiction Magazine publishes flash fiction.
Flash fiction stories are typically 1000 words or less.
Lee-Ann Khoh is a self-confessed socially awkward butterfly who prefers writing to talking but has been known to sing in front of an audience on occasion. Hailing from Perth, she studied journalism at Curtin University before deciding she was better at making up her own stories. She is now a library technician who fantasises about the day someone asks if there are any Lee-Ann Khoh books in the library.
If you meet Lee-Ann, she probably won’t say much, but you can read some of her thoughts at leeannkhoh.com.
Keely O'Shaughnessy is a fiction writer with cerebral palsy, who lives in Gloucestershire, U.K. with her husband and two cats. She has been shortlisted for the Bath Flash Fiction Award and won Retreat West’s Monthly Micro contest. Her micro-chapbook, The Swell of Seafoam, was published as part of Ghost City Press’ Summer Series 2022 and her debut collection was published by Alien Buddha Press.
Her short fiction has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best Small Fictions as well as being selected for the Wigleaf Top 50. She is Managing Editor at Flash Fiction Magazine.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2017I am very grateful that my friend intrroduced this book to me. It brought me back to simpler times back when I read short stories while growing up. I really enjoyed lots of stories in this book, the Phone Number by Marcio Saito is particularly great, I suppose it is because I can relate to the story at my age, the "what ifs" of life... even as I am truly grateful for all I got in my life.
Another good thing about short stories is that I can read the book in my leisure time, they are independent and not a collection of threads to be read over days, weeks, or many books, it is much simpler times.
Like other reviewers, I also searched for a common theme in the book. There are stories about stress and anxiety caused by technology, aging, fear of dying, the fantastic, silly stories that made me laugh, and touching stories that made me teary. To me, what is common in the book is the humanity, the ability to say so much with few words, and the desire to tell a good story. To all the talented and aspiring writers in the book, my best wishes, and hope you will keep writing for the benefit of us readers. In my opinion, even J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series got better in her later books, so keep writing!

For those who are not familiar with the genre, flash fiction is typically considered to be stories of no more than 1,000 words. Flash Fiction Magazine, and its sister publication, 101 Words, are online flash magazines and the source of this curated list of 50 stories. It includes flash stories that are exactly 101 words as well as longer pieces up to the 1,000 word limit.
Flash fiction is a challenge both to write and to read. With a maximum limit on the length of the story, a reader is not going to be handed everything on a platter with all themes, motives, descriptions and rationales neatly outlined and prettied up with a bow. Some stories are easier to read than others. On the other hand, if you are a reader who enjoys engaging with the stories you read, then this anthology is for you. I found all of the stories enjoyable. Being short, these are the kind of stories you can easily read multiple times. The very best works will reward you with new layers of meaning and nuance with every new read.
There is no common theme to the stories in this book. They are, on the whole, more literary in nature and deal with themes and ideas that will be familiar and appeal to a wide audience. With that said, SF and fantasy get a few places at the table as well.
If you like good fiction, consider giving this a read. Those familiar with the flash fiction genre will not be disappointed. If you have never read this kind of work--what's stopping you?
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2017Great Stuff! The fifty stories here include both Flash and Microfictions both of which I love. Some I had read on-line such as Anvils from the Sky by Matt Handle which had me astounded and rolling in the floor! It's a toss up for my favorite, both sentimental stories - Aiden's Flowers by Lee-Ann Khoh and Tastes Like Grappa by Evan Sheldon (the final story in the book - well placed to encourage future purchases ;)
Other favorites include:
Don't Text and Drive by Angela Trevino
Chaos by A. B. Morrison
The Appointment by Daniel Pereyra
Living in the Now by J. Hardy Carroll
Phone Number by Marcio Saito
The Garden of Saints by Jennifer Dillard
Really no bad stories here at all as there are in some collections.
Buy it! Enjoy it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2017This book has gems and average stories. It is definitely worth the read, but some stories you will skim on by. Overall I would rate it 50/50. I will definitely check out the next volume once released.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2017This is a fun collection of both short, short flash pieces and longer stories. The pieces run the gamut from those with a religious bent like Garden of Saints, to dark humor stories like Untimely Demise, to romantic dramas like Phone Number - all standouts in my opinion. A couple of my other favorites are the shorts like Living in the Now, a dark piece that is arresting and packs a (literal) punch, and Curtain Call that beautifully describes a plane crash and its sad outcome in just a few paragraphs. Way too many good tales to cover in a single review, but there is certainly something for every fiction lover in this collection, for sure.
Disclaimer: I was given an advanced copy of this publication in exchange for an honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2017I picked this up while it was free, looking for some bite-sized writing to fill those spare moments between work and chores and life. No such luck. I devoured the book in a single day. The stories are varied, with a range of styles and topics. All of them were well-written, even those ones that weren't to my personal taste. I think amongst my favorites were Aiden's Flowers; Crane; From Roger, With Love; Anvils From the Sky; Chaos; Exit Interview; Operator; and Tastes Like Grappa.
I would highly recommend picking up this little gem and look forward to future volumes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for getting lost in the amazing world of flash fiction
I was lucky enough to receive a review copy of this collection of quirky, unforgettable, and simply ludicrous stories. Some stories masterfully elucidated the intricacies of human nature; some took me aback by the sheer depth of the authors' imagination; some made me stop, think a little, and chuckle having recognized myself in them. All in all, it is a brilliant collection of stories fit for that time when you just want to pour yourself some Earl Grey, sit by the fireplace, and get lost in the amazing world of flash fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Flash Fiction!
As a writer, I know how difficult short fiction is to write. As a reader, I was amazed at the quality and calibre of the stories in Flash Fiction Magazine. There was such a diverse range of stories, from a diverse range of authors. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them and look forward to the next collection.

I really enjoyed this collection of original and engaging short stories. From humorous and witty tales, to thought provoking pieces that bring a tear to the eye, there is a story here to suit every mood. It's a brilliant introduction to the genre for first time flash readers, and a great read for those like me, who already love flash fiction. All in all, this is the perfect book to take with you on your travels, or to simply enjoy when you have a spare five minutes. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read from indie publishers
I discovered the genre of flash fiction accidentally. This book is a good introduction to the genre as it has a mix of different stories - all short, all good. The short fiction publishing is not dead, it's just moved to pastures new.
