Not all battles are fought on the battlefield.
In 1988, Master Gunnery Sergeant Amos Murdoch retires from the Marine Corps to join fellow veterans Solly Pinkus and Jonny Edwards in launching the 3M Detective Agency. Their modest goal of investigating workman’s comp claims is upended when they are drawn into the murder of a disgraced homosexual Marine.
A routine inquiry uncovers a chilling conspiracy rooted in the Vietnam War of twenty years ago, forcing the trio to confront not only the sins of the Corps but also secrets they’ve kept for years. As their bonds are tested and danger mounts, the three Marines and their allies must brave treacherous waters to expose the truth and bring the guilty to justice. But the ghosts of southeast Asia have their own reckoning in store…
To Keep Our Honor Clean is a gripping tale of loyalty, redemption, and sacrifice that will leave you haunted by its themes of the cost of honor and the confrontation of painful truths.

To Keep Our Honor Clean is a spinoff of the Natalie McMasters series, telling the story of Natalie's Uncle Amos in his prime, but it works well as a standalone novel. While Amos couldn't be more different from Natalie, his adventures are equally entertaining. The writing is solid, the characters have a good amount of depth, and the story moves along briskly to a thrilling climax. It's a must-read for fans of the author's other books, or anyone who likes mysteries with a military angle.

Thomas A. Burns, Jr. delivers an interesting, and surprisingly nuanced, military thriller in To Keep Our Honor Clean. Part detective yarn, part ghost-of-war reckoning, this debut entry in the 3M Detective Agency series is a solid opening for fans of the genre. The story deals with the murder of a disgraced Marine, which opens a vault of corruption. The protagonists are 'Nam vet Amos Murdoch, his fellow Marines, and their loved ones -- Burns is reverential to the Corps while also remaining honest about the realities of their life.

The prose can be leaden at time, but the plot moves with admirable precision, and the character work is satisfying. Amos in particular is a standout: a decent man, a reluctant leader with a few scars. His "aw, shucks" speech pattern is a welcome contrast to the harsh realities he's experienced. If you're a fan of military thrillers, detective stories with bite, or simply enjoy watching Marines poke at hornets' nests, this one's worth a salute.

Fast-paced and inventive, the story has a ton of action driving the reader through understanding, unraveling, and finally resolving a mystery that has deep roots and a wide range of consequences. Some people (notably Amos!) follow a code -- some people follow rules, and rules are a lot easier to come up with justifications and rationalizations to break. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that following a code wins out, which is satisfying and even comforting despite the losses along the way, some of which are heavy!

I really enjoyed To Keep Our Honor Clean by Tom Burns. This is a "spin-off" from his excellent Natalie McMasters series, and tells of the first case handled by Nattie's uncle Amos Murdoch and his 3M Detective Agency. The story covers a mystery that spans three decades and masterfully weaves an interesting detective case while developing the characters that populate the new detective agency. The pacing is terrific, the story is imaginative and well-researched, and the book was an absorbing read. I definitely recommend it!

What a fantastic story. As a Vietnam Veteran (although not a marine) it kept my interest from beginning to end. I strongly recommend this book to everyone.

‘To Keep Our Honor Clean…’ gives you an insight into the lives and intrigues of the Marine Corps. A complex plot, with many layers of conflict, conspiracies, camaraderie and racism makes it a captivating read. Add a murder investigation to all this and you have a perfect thriller to keep you hooked! It is remarkable how so many subplots are woven together into one story, with a dash of emotional undertone.

The style of writing is so professional that the narrator seems to be a part of the marines and could deeply connect with them, thereby pulling the reader in with him. The battle scenes are extremely well drawn with minutest details of sounds and scents of the misty jungle, combat boots sinking in muddy ground, eerie shadows playing on the foliage, which add a touch of sensitivity and make the narrative powerful and believable.

Characterization is superbly handled, with Jonny and Mitchell having multi-dimensional aspects of personality, difficult to understand which one is the real part. The dedication of Amos, the recklessness of Solly, the determination of Lisa and the concern of Nguyen stand out despite the dark complexities of the struggles before them.

I found a few typos and a liberal use of curse words.

The year is 1988, and Amos Murdock along with his two friends leave the Marines to start a detective agency. When their simple workman’s comp case evolves into a murder case of a fellow Marine, they must confront their Vietnam past to find the truth.
I haven’t read many (if any) military thrillers, but I found this one interesting. Amos has a lot of layers. His pain, regret, shame, pride, hope—everything was real. The history, the war, the horror—nothing was whitewashed. All that made this story a little hard to read at times, but it was necessary to show the real world in which Amos and real-life soldiers live in.
The target audience is current or former military personnel, but civilians like me can still enjoy it.

Three ex-marines form a detective agency and when a body of another ex serviceman turns up at a local hotel it uncovers secrets and lies going all the way back to the war in Vietnam.

Full of great characters (my favourite has to be Solly) and a plot to really get your teeth into, this hits all the spots for a five star read
