This is a story about a family trip to Yellowstone. Each family member has a list of things to do which we not only HEAR about but also SEE for ourselves through the stunning artwork. Yes, the book is FILLED with amazing, vivid, and educational (when coupled with parental comments) illustrations. For example: when the family visits the Grand Prismatic Springs, Mom explains why there is a rainbow of colors around them - colors that are vividly displayed in the artwork.
The entire book was filled with awesome and vivid illustrations. In some ways I ALMOST thought it was a little TOO informative: it COULD have been seen as school lessons. That would have been awesome if the children were home schooled. However, there is NOTHING to indicate that is the case. On the contrary the children are (IMO) very EXCITED about the trip AND what they are learning along the way. They are like little sponges soaking in the whole experience because they WANT to be there - not because they are FORCED to be there. That makes this story a WIN - WIN. Kids who are EAGER to learn more about what they are seeing with their own eyes only sparks a desire to learn even more - not only for characters in a book but also for those READING the book. How great is that? Education doesn't have to be something more or less pushed upon children. It can also be something that can be experienced by what children see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. (Of course not every sense has to be experienced in every activity. Best not to sit in these hot springs. They can cook you! Literally!)
Bottom line: I highly recommend this story for families interested in doing things together - even (or perhaps especially) when one can learn something though those experiences. Who says learning has to be no fun? (And if you have someone in mind for that question, they are just plain WRONG!) Well done, my friends! Well done!

As they arrive, John jumps out and runs down the boardwalk... Stopping near a small pot of mud that is bubbling and hissing.
Dad explains, "The hissing is caused by gases including steam, Carbon Dioxide, and a little hydrogen sulfide. Those gases rush up from under the Earth through the open vents."
