The Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon: Sweet Medicine Spirits - Novavose (Dead Horse Canyon Saga Book 3) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 6 ratings

The DEAD HORSE CANYON Trilogy's explosive conclusion!
Picking up where "Return to Dead Horse Canyon: Grandfather Spirits" left off, we find that much to her enemy’s dismay, Sara’s life is spared, but with a steep price. A million dollar bounty remains on her demise, motivating another to threaten her life. Paralyzed by the last attempt to eliminate her, Charlie promises to help restore her health so she can walk again. Before he can accomplish that, however, the unthinkable happens, which disrupts and redirects their plans.

To fulfill his promise to his Grandfather to complete a four-day ceremonial fast at the Sacred Mountain, Charlie journeys to Bear Butte in South Dakota, known to the Cheyenne as
Novavose. A series of startling visions reveal the full scope of his destiny. Of prime importance is to restore the ancient Earth Giving Ceremony known as the Massaum, originally revealed thousands of years before by their prophet, Sweet Medicine.

Has the time come at last for Native People to unite and fulfill Black Cloud’s curse on Dead Horse Canyon? And what about those other 19th century prophecies directed to the 7th Generation by Black Elk and Crazy Horse?

Phase I of the PURF complex is complete. A gala open house to celebrate is scheduled around the same time as the
Gathering of Indigenous Leaders. While the underground facility is filled to the brim with corrupt lobbyists, contractors, and government officials, not far away a host of First Nation Americans is entrenched in a ceremony that promises to restore them to their land.

5-STAR EDITORIAL REVIEW FROM READERS' FAVORITE

"
The Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon by Marcha Fox and Pete Risingsun stands out for its sharp writing and complete ability to immerse readers, especially in Charlie's spiritual transformation. Poor Sara just cannot get a break. Attacked, paralyzed, kidnapped, and then labeled a domestic terrorist and sanctioned! This isn’t just a fight for survival; this is about the power of truth in the face of overwhelming opposition. Charlie fits into this description, with a spectacular ceremony for Sara's healing, but also as a powerful catalyst when he is in the presence of Grandmother Earth and the consequences of his actions. Fox and Risingsun are a dream writing team in every way, and, culturally, this portrayal of Charlie's heritage is painted from the sky to the smallest pebble and the fire burning in between. The pacing is elevated by point of view shifts and all the drama, but also a surprising relationship transformation as well. Ultimately, this finale succeeds with a perfect 10 landing. Very, very highly recommended."

About the Author

Marcha Fox earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Utah State University in 1987, which facilitated a 20+ year career at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Forever fascinated by the heavens, when her attempt to debunk astrology backfired, she pursued knowledge in that field as well. She graduated from the International Academy of Astrology's professional development program in 2012 and created ValkyrieAstrology.com. Much of the popular website's informational content can be found in "Whobeda's Guide to Basic Astrology." Her previous fiction work includes five novels in the hard science fiction genre. Her epic Star Trails Tetralogy series has been highly acclaimed for its family-oriented plot as well as its palatable and accurate science content. Directed primarily to teens and young adults with an interest in science or engineering, more information can be found on StarTrailsSaga.com.Born in Peekskill, New York, she has lived in California, Utah, and Texas in the course of raising her family that comprises six grown children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She pampers her indoor and outdoor cats while trying to keep up with her astrology clients, home, yard, garden, friends, family, and of course, writing. She currently makes her home in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.

Pete Risingsun is an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe well-versed in their ceremonies and traditions. He has served as a spirit helper to medicine men in ceremonial sweat lodges where traditional procedures are meticulously followed. Born the eighth child of ten in 1950, he was raised on a small ranch east of Busby, Montana on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in the southeast corner of the state. Pete wears his grandfather's Cheyenne name, Mo'ȯhtáveaénohe (Black Hawk), who was a member of the Council of Forty-Four Chiefs. In addition, he's a proud fifth generation descendant of Iron Shirt, a ceremonial medicine man warrior who fought beside Chief Littlewolf. The story is told that his buckskin Cheyenne war shirt had powerful medicine that made him fearless. The buckskin would turn to iron during battle and the soldiers' bullets would fall to the ground. After graduating high school in 1968, he attended Montana State University for four years. When offered a position with Exxon as an employee relations director overseas, he turned it down, instead completing a three-year apprenticeship in plant operations in Billings, Montana. He worked in that capacity for one additional year until he accepted a job as adult education director for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe back home in Lame Deer, grateful to see the refinery fade away in the rear-view mirror. Back on the reservation, Pete raised black angus cattle and bred championship Quarter horses. He served as a Tribal Council member for six years and was the first Northern Cheyenne elected as a Rosebud County Commissioner, a position he held from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2012.He's the proud father of one daughter, Echo Raine, who blessed him with two grandchildren, Sierra Star and Skyler Seven. Pete is currently retired, but has stayed busy co-writing The Curse of Dead Horse Canyon trilogy the past few years as well as compiling an accurate history of his tribe from the Northern Cheyenne point of view.

Marcha Fox writes in a variety of genres from cross-cultural thrillers to hard science fiction and astrology. While raising six children she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Utah State University which resulted in a 21+ year career at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. When she retired she turned to writing full-time, which had always been her dream.

Her most recent literary work is the cross-cultural trilogy, "The Dead Horse Canyon Saga," coauthored with Pete Risingsun. A masterful blend of modern day conspiracy thriller with Cheyenne history and cultural practices, the first two books collected a total of ten awards with the grand finale released in January 2025.

Other fiction work includes "The Star Trails Tetralogy," a multi-volume STEM-friendly science fiction series designed for youth with an interest in science. The series is also available as audiobooks narrated by T.W. Ashworth.

Much to the horror of her physics professors, she's a practicing professional astrologer with clients around the globe. She has written two full-length books on that subject, one for beginners and one about eclipses.

She has a passion for feline fur babies and lives in an 1898 farmhouse on three acres in rural New York State, having previously lived in California, Utah, and Texas.

At first, I was intimidated by the number of pages and my lack of time, but I got over that within a few pages because I loved the characters and was rooting for a positive outcome... Both villains and heroes came alive with understandable agendas. I also learned a lot about Native American culture and history, not to mention seeing governmental/corporate corruption, which I've been seeing on a daily basis in real life for far too long - it was wonderful to know I'm not the only one who sees the lies and shinannigans The one thing I would have liked was a little pronunciation guide for the Native American words, but that wouldn't be an issue if anyone realized how fantastic a read this is and made a movie.

I waited years for the final story in this trilogy, only to be sorely disappointed. There is so much I could say, but I'll sum it up: it's long and boring. I skipped through many parts, determined to finish, but when I got to the end, I wished I hadn't.

Also, as I said in my review of the second book, the word "y'all" is plural, not singular. It drove me crazy to have a character say that when referring to one person.

Another factual error: tornado watches mean conditions are "right" for potential tornadoes. A tornado warning means rotation has been detected and take shelter immediately. However, the author doesn't seem to know this. Here's a direct quote from the book. "Watches were worse than warnings. Warnings noted conditions could turn ugly; watches declared they already had."

Can anything else be trusted if the author missed something that I've known since grade school?

The ending was too incredible even to believe. You'd have to read it to see, but I don't recommend wasting your time.

I want to take this opportunity to mention how impressive your story-telling-writing is! It’s difficult to find anything that my husband can entertain himself with personally. His Asperger’s mind needs a definite and precise order for any printed material to make sense to him…He has spent most of his literary life reading documentaries, or non-fiction books.
After our retirement I had looked for something for us to do together. Since my evenings are usually reserved for reading, I searched for books we might read at the same time, having a common fantasy we could experience together. Lo and behold—accompanied with a complete shock—he thumbed through some books around here and chose Harry Potter. (He’d seen the movies and thought they were stupid. Well, so did I and had said numerous times that they were an insult to the books.) He LOVED the Harry Potter books because of J. K. Rowling’s ability to have her reader “see”, “feel” and even “smell” what she’d written on the page.
After finishing all seven of the Harry Potter series, we tried other books. I thought Tolkien’s Trilogy would be our next adventure, but it was too convoluted for my husband’s mind; understanding the different races of people confused his autistic mind even with a deep dive, which just made him anxious.
At that point, he became gun shy, or rather novel-shy!
I was so excited when your third book came out; I had read books one and two when they came out respectively. When I read them, it was my experience that your writing equaled to that of Rowling’s.
After your third book was released, the Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon: Sweet Medicine Spirits dangled like a carrot in my mind, but I couldn’t pull up enough of the past two books in my memory to be able to jump, flatfooted, into the last book. Since I had passed the first two books to my daughter to read, I went in and bought them again so they could bring me solidly back into the complicated plot of the ongoing saga. All the while, Eric was adamant about “probably not going to like these books”. I finally thought, it’s okay, I’m reading them anyway.
Since again I’m so enamored by your writing skill, after an evening’s read and the depth of your characters, along with the details of your plot, I couldn’t help but make comments about it.
Then one evening, I saw him with “Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon: Sweet Medicine Spirits” flipping here and there, reading. You can’t push a person on the spectrum, but as I noticed him reading the book, I’d casually remark that I have the first two books if he wanted to see what came before. After running into enough unanswered questions, he finally asked for The Curse of Dead Horse Canyon: Cheyenne Spirits—the first book. He hasn’t put it down.
What fun we’re having! I’m still in book two, but he can tell me where he is in book one and I remember. He’s reading so fast I tease him that he’s going to pass me up. That’s not an unrealistic statement because he reads so much faster than I can. Nonetheless, we are spending exciting evenings with Sara, Charlie, Will, Connie, Patrice, and the rest of the others, not being able to put them down until our eyes close and we can’t open them again until we have had a night’s sleep.
    THANK YOU! 🙏

Government corruption ignites a 19th Century Cheyenne curse. Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon is book three in the series. I've read the entire series by my friend Marcha Fox and her co-author, Pete Risingsun.

"Revenge" is a big book sitting at 165,857 words. I was the editor. It has a deep plot. What a magnificent read. You will step into the world of the Cheyenne and learn many of their thought processes and mysteries through the Cheyenne characters portrayed in the book. Characters you will fall in love with. Characters you will fantasize horrible death wishes for with fingers crossed. And sleepless nights as you read it.
