My best friend’s parents were murdered…

Now he needs my help.

My name is Deacon Colter. My best friend’s parents were murdered. To help him, I must overcome the worst of my obsessive-compulsive nature.

Is she involved? Can I trust her?

Even leaning on the Lord, I don’t have the answers. I never expected 1893 to tear my world apart.

The 1880s and 1890s bring dramatic changes to the Colter family in Prescott, Arizona Territory. Family secrets, secret identities, and blind ambition, threatens to tear them apart and stretches their faith to the limit. Will adversity bring them closer together? Or will family dynamics scatter them as these five brothers move into manhood? Will they remain Colter strong?

I love writing. Whether it is contemporary cowboy romance or historical fiction set in my beloved state of Arizona, my novels always tell an engaging story of flawed characters in needed of second chances, redemption, or they must overcome personal trials. I love finding ways to weave real history and real settings into my stories.

My husband, Jim, and I live in Gilbert, Arizona with our two dogs, Bella and Daisy. We enjoy traveling throughout the state finding new adventures which often end up influencing the stories I write. We also are very active at Rock Point Church in Queen Creek, Arizona.

Prescott, Arizona is the perfect setting for a Western romance, and The Resourceful Stockman by Karen Baney delivers.

The book’s format is multiple POV—two men and two women—with a clear delineation of who is speaking at the beginning of each section. I don’t usually see many first-person speakers in a novel, but it worked well. It was especially helpful in understanding Deacon, who is embarrassed about his “quirks.” He knows he is uncomfortable when things aren’t tidy or in what he perceives as a “correct order.” The book’s readers will immediately recognize behavior on the spectrum and OCD. I never expected—and was thrilled to see—how well Deacon was supported by his friends, family, and coworkers who loved him. They saw his “odd behavior” as a gift that allowed him to learn quickly, recognize patterns, and solve problems. Instead of labeling him “strange,” they saw him as “resourceful.”

The Old West was a rough place, but there were pockets of godly people who looked to Scripture as a guide for how to treat others with kindness. That truth shines through in this book.

Not that Karen Baney glosses over the roughness of the Old West. The characters must deal with rustlers, gangs, cruel fathers, revenge, justice, and displacement. The author, however, brings together a complete picture of Prescott, where no one balked at women working as office managers, clerks, or teachers and instead respected their intelligence and skills. Men were also judged according to their abilities and character.

The Resourceful Stockman is an exciting trip back to Old Prescott in the company of good people the reader would be proud to call friends.

Grady and Deacon are like brothers. They are both vets and would do most anything for each other no matter the danger. A great book as all of those in this series are. A very talented author who combines all that is exciting, romantic, with lots of action and throws in some humor to make a most interesting read.

At first I wasn’t sure that I would like the format of this book. Each chapter goes back and forth between characters which made it hard for me to keep up with. As I began to understand the flow of the story, I began to really get to know each character better and enjoy the story. There is a definite faith element in the story which gives an illustration of forgiveness and trusting God.

I usually can say I like one particular character more than the other , however in this case each one brought an important piece to the story which fit together like a puzzle. Deacon and Grady are like brothers and look out for each other. It is funny how one thinks his friend rescued him but in reality they did that for each other. Their bond is built on trust and how Jesus brought them together to heal.

Grady still remembers when his parents were murdered and it replays in his mind constantly. Deacon is there to help him through his grief and takes a job with him even though it is out of his comfort zone. That is what friends do; they support each other and lay their lives down for each other.

The young women in the story have a tragic past. Their father treated them unkindly and placed them in dangerous situations. I must warn readers that there are sone sensitive subjects that may be uncomfortable for some to read. The author does do a good job of being attentive to how these subjects are presented in the story.

I enjoyed learning about livestock and how much work goes into taking care of them. Cattle can spread disease easily if not caught in time. Grady and Deacon have their hands full trying to track down where the spread of foot and mouth disease started and also stumble upon cattle rustlers. The story is a good western story with danger that kept me reading the story. I had to know who was behind the murder of Grady’s parents.

The ending is filled with adventure as Grady and Deacon close in on who has been behind stealing cattle and also the murders of Grady’s parents. I felt like I was watching a western on television with outlaws, gunshots and suspense. I enjoyed the story and was happy with the ending.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I enjoy Christian Historical Romance books. The Resourceful Stockman by Karen Baney is Book 4 in the Colter Sons series. I have read Book 3 in this series and I was excited to read Book 4.

The setting of this book is 1893 in Prescott, Arizona. Deacon Colter has been a Stockyard Vet for many years and love his job. He is being asked to be a Livestock inspector and he accepts the job to support his Best Friend. He also hopes to one day marry and have a family, but he lacks confidence that will happen due to his quirks. Grady Thatcher has the opportunity to find out who killed his parents 6yrs ago, although this might jeopardize his relationship with one of the Harper sisters. Lilian and Justine Harper are sisters who have come to Prescott, AZ to find peace from the abusive relationships they were in. Lillian begins a relationship with Deacon and Justine is with Grady. Justine is wondering if Grady really loves her or is with her to gain access to information she may know. Will the 2 couples find true love or will the past stand in their way of true love?

I was engrossed in this book from the very first chapter. I really like that Deacon and Grady have a solid friendship, more like brothers than Friends. The Sisters find love in Prescott, only to be question if there are ulterior motives behind the love, especially from Grady. I really enjoyed reading how the 2 relationships were so different, yet alike. This book is one of Family, Romance, Faith, and Suspense! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. GREAT BOOK!
