4.8 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

They have everything I want…
…something my money can’t buy.

My name is James Colter. Everything I touch turns into gold. I’m a successful entrepreneur with everything I could ever want… Except the one thing my brothers have that I don’t: true love.

When I finally meet a woman who captures my interest, she’s a decade younger than me. She’s ambitious and wants an unconventional career.

Should I follow my heart and propose? Will she choose her career or her parents’ approval instead of me?

The 1880s and 1890s bring dramatic changes to the Colter family in Prescott, Arizona Territory. Family secrets, secret identities, and blind ambition, threatens to tear them apart and stretches their faith to the limit. Will adversity bring them closer together? Or will family dynamics scatter them as these five brothers move into manhood? Will they remain Colter strong?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Baney writes situations that can happen in our everyday lives and weaves it together with a story of romance. This book hits home for people who are afraid of disappointing people they love, when they make a decision to go against the grain." --Billi T., To Every Book There Is A Season Blog

I love writing. Whether it is contemporary cowboy romance or historical fiction set in my beloved state of Arizona, my novels always tell an engaging story of flawed characters in needed of second chances, redemption, or they must overcome personal trials. I love finding ways to weave real history and real settings into my stories.

My husband, Jim, and I live in Gilbert, Arizona with our two dogs, Bella and Daisy. We enjoy traveling throughout the state finding new adventures which often end up influencing the stories I write. We also are very active at Rock Point Church in Queen Creek, Arizona.

Oldest brother James's story is told in the third book of this series. He is the go getter, living life for what he can get out of it. He loves his family certainly, but James is going to forge his own way. He enjoys working and keeping busy and making money. Then he meets Keri Glassman at a dance. He doesn't realize he met her before, she was just a little girl then, as there is a ten-year age gap between them.

Keri is a contract attorney. Another unusual job for a woman of that time, but one that started opening up to them. Keri falls in love with James and understands why he is waiting for her to grow up. When she does their romance moves rather quickly. She just wishes her mother was on board with it. She and James have to learn to adapt to the changing financial world, and through those ups and downs they fall even more in love.

Then on a trip to Chicago's world fair, James and Keri make a decision that changes their whole life. When they come back home, Keri is between a rock and a hard place. She does not want to disappoint her parents, but in the end, she may just end up disappointing everyone.

This was another good romantic addition to the Colter's family saga.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

James Colter is 10 years older than Keri Glassman. They met when they were young but haven' seen each other until they are at a dance together. She is only 16, too young to date. But they do start to court when she is 18. Her mother believes the age difference is too much, even though she, herself is 9 years younger then Keri's father. This story tells their ups and downs, with finally a HEA. I read a request from Karen Baney for readers to get a copy and post an honest review, of this and another of her stories. Not ARC's since the book has been out a while. I had only read one of her books before that and it was excellent, so I agreed. This is my own opinion. I also read the novella Hannah's Heart: James, a companion story to The Railroad Magnate, where Hannah shares some of her journal entries about James. It was very interesting. Thank you, Karen Baney, for these opportunities.

I honestly did not like James at all in the first story of this series (Sam), but he definitely had a life change!
That first time he encountered Keri almost gave me goosebumps! So romantic!

I enjoy Christian Historical Romance books and I also love reading books by "New to Me" Authors. The Railroad Magnate by Karen Baney is Book 3 in the Colter Sons series. I have not read the first 2 books in this series, although this book reads excellent as a Standalone book.

The setting of this book is 1891 in Prescott, Arizona. James Colter is a career-minded Railroad Industry Businessman. He LOVES his career, but he also desires to have a wife and family. He goes into depression as he sees his younger brothers getting married and having children. He just might have met the woman of his dreams when he dances with the daughter of an older friend. Keri Glassman wants to get married, have children, and have a career as a Contract Attorney. Keri is very excited when she is invited on a Train Ride by a Suitor. She goes on the train ride and now she feels very much in love. Keri has so much at stake as she doesn't want to disappoint her parents by not following in their career path. Will James Colter and Keri Glassman choose career over love? Do James and Keri finally decide to settle down and get married?

I was engrossed in this book from the very first chapter. I LOVE that the Book is centered around the RailRoad Industry and a Train Ride is involved. I admit James wasn't a favorite character as I began reading the book, but I LOVE how he matured throughout the Book. Keri wanted to please her parents by following in their footsteps. I LOVE how Keri finds the courage to be able to follow her dreams of becoming a Wife and Mother. James seemed like a "quiet Christian" in the book, but he clearly was a man of faith. This book is one of Family, Romance, Faith, and Suspense! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. GREAT BOOK!
