Mama knew a secret about me...

My name is Sam Colter, and I am the misfit of my family.

Papa wants me to take over the family ranch. I don’t think I’m the right son. Will I disappoint him or figure out how to run it successfully?

Then my life turned upside down when a journalist showed up. It was my job to protect the ranch and I failed. Worse yet, I find myself falling for the woman who betrayed me.

Is she the one? Can I forgive her?

Only the good Lord, and maybe Mama, knows for certain. 1887 is gonna leave a mark.

The 1880s and 1890s bring dramatic changes to the Colter family in Prescott, Arizona Territory. Family secrets, secret identities, and blind ambition threatens to tear them apart and stretches their faith to the limit. Will adversity bring them closer together? Or will family dynamics scatter them as these five brothers move into manhood? Will they remain Colter strong?

I love writing. Whether it is contemporary cowboy romance or historical fiction set in my beloved state of Arizona, my novels always tell an engaging story of flawed characters in needed of second chances, redemption, or they must overcome personal trials. I love finding ways to weave real history and real settings into my stories.

My husband, Jim, and I live in Gilbert, Arizona with our two dogs, Bella and Daisy. We enjoy traveling throughout the state finding new adventures which often end up influencing the stories I write. We also are very active at Rock Point Church in Queen Creek, Arizona.

The Reluctant Cattleman is a wonderful western story of coming of age, finding love, and becoming a man in 1887. He was a bookkeeper for the ranch, the horse training facility and the butcher shop in town. To say the least he was smart when it came to numbers. But, the day E.M. Thatcher arrived to write some stories about the first wagon train that came to settle Prescott, they had referred her to Hannah and Will Colter. When she arrived they were expecting a man. Since they had five grown boys in the house, they put Ellie Mae in the cabin. She is clumsy so Sam walks her to and from the cabin to the main house to eat. His Papa asked that Sam keep an eye on Ellie Mae. He had fallen in love the first day he helped her off her horse. The more they are together and the more they learn about each other Ellie Mae gets that same feeling. Sam even writes to her father to ask if he can court her. Ellie Mae asks that Hannah tells her about coming to Prescott on the wagon train that started the town. When the children hear she was married to a doctor they had not ever heard of that. He died and she went to work at the boarding house. That is when she met Will that had came with a bunch of cowboys to find a place in Arizona to build a ranch. They built homes and barns and whatever buildings they needed in the daytime and spent the night by firelight. They even had to fight off Indians one time. But the big ranch was like a family compound and they referred to each other as family. Once the articles are finished, Elle Mae is asked by her editor to move back to town to work on other stories.

Ellie Mae’s articles are so good they ask her to do a story on the train. There are rumors about the train and the contract they signed to build the railroad had not been completed as they had not built a round house at Prescott as promised. Elle Mae is to ride to Seligman on Wednesday and back to Prescott on Thursday so she can ask the riders what they think of the train. To go to Seligman you ride backwards. Then you ride forward on the trip back to Prescott. James works on the train and they want her to interview him. He is altogether different from Sam so he asks Hannah to go with Ellie Mae on the train. Elle Mae gets a great story from the trip and when she writes the story she makes the hero Hannah where she stepped up and spoke her mind. The stories she got from the train ride lasted for several newspapers. Not long after that her family came to the Independence Day activities in Prescott. Her parents talked privately with Sam to see if he deserved their blessings to marry Elle Mae. Her father said he would write the answer to Sam. When weeks go by, Sam is worried. That is when Elle Mae gets a horrifying letter from a neighbor of her parents that changes Ellie Mae and her brother Grady’s lives forever. Sam steps up and with his Papa’s help they make arrangements to move both of them back to the ranch. A very heartfelt story that shows life’s difficult times and the changes young adults have to go through growing into the people they need to be to face life head on.

This is one of my favorite books by this author. This one was filled with a families love for one another even though there was stress between a couple at times. Adventure, tragedy, suspense, romance, complications, you name it. It has it all. I am anxious to read more in this series.

New to me author! I loved this story! Now this was a true romance. No conflict or overpowering angst. Sam and Ellie Mae’s story will stir your hearts.

    Lovely epilogue 🥰

I am so happy to have found and read these books. I actually started reading these books all out of order, by accident, but that has not stopped my enjoyment of them. This series is about the Colter brothers and their sister. My first taste of this series was with The Restless Wrangler, book four, and I read through that one pretty quickly. Then I started, quite by accident, The Roaming Adventurer. After that I quickly got myself sorted and read this one, second oldest brother, Sam's story and the first in the series.

I like how each of the brothers start off by telling us their story, and it usually begins with how they view their relationship with their parents. Sam is the one who is very steadfast, he likes to play by the rules. He acts more like the oldest child would, but he is not. He is the one who is taking over the ranch for his parents. He can also be one that can hold a grudge.

Ellie May is the woman Sam loves. She is a writer and to get around in a man's world, she does not advertise her full name. So when the Colters agree for this upcoming writher to do a series of articles on them, imagine their surprise when Ellie May shows up.

Sam is quite surprised not only that she is a woman writer, but also his attraction to her. But he is not going to show that to anyone. There are a few times where he lets his temper get the best of him. It was a give and take to watch their romance grow as they grew as characters too.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

A well written sweet romance. I has a good plot and is a page-Turner. I'd call this one an inspirational romance.
