- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2021This book is an imaginative, sometimes raucous, beginning of a LitRPG series. Cassidy Delgado is the product manager for a company called Lush Games. She enters an ambitious space-age game soon to be rolled out by her company to defeat a hacker who’s also threatening her family. She has a few allies, including her loyal boyfriend Joe.
In the game, there is plenty of physical action, including fights, spacecraft battles, and sexual activity, which is relevant to the story. The sexual activity won’t bother most.
This is a very enjoyable, quick read (189 pages) with plenty of excitement and twists. The author’s bio shows a history of cybersecurity employment. He puts his expertise to good use here.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2021Overall, this book was a fun read and enjoyable. There are a bit too many sexual jokes that fall flat at times. The story itself was good and the author certainly puts a lot of technical expertise into play. I found the repetitive listing of 'upgrades' detracting from the story. This is a good week-end read so long as the reader is comfortable with blatant sexual references bombarding them throughout the book. The formatting and editing was well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2021Blast Off was a fun read for me. The story centers around Cassidy, a game developer who gets trapped in a full body VR suit and has to find her way out while dealing with hackers and antagonistic NPCs.
I like how the author goes into detail about how the technology works. The in-game story is a bit silly and full of inuendo, but given that it is a videogame, that doesn't seem unnatural. The story also has a good amount of humor.
There is some explicit content, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story. I would say Blast Off is a worthwhile read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2021Just Not my cup of tea... I tried to finish this book and I just could not get through it.. very basic writing with a lot of filler....
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2021Full disclosure, this isn't my type of book. I try to read new things and stay open-minded but I couldn't get around the flat, ill-humored jokes. It was decently written. If you're a big fan of explicit content then this book will be for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2022I've never read a "litrpg" before and didn't know what to expect. I got this copy free and gave it a shot.
Amateurish and juvenile, full of typos. I will not buy the second book at .99 and would not read it even were it free.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2021Blast Off starts out with just enough seriousness to get your attention while keeping it light. You know you’re in for a fun ride.
Goodin’s debut into LitRPG is satisfying. He clearly understands storytelling and is in it for the long haul.
His experience in real computer systems really make the language believable; rather than just saying some random tech phrase, most of this is realistic, for what it is. I definitely got hooked once Cassidy logged in.
It’s quite immersive!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2023A thrill-packed journey into the world of gaming along with a lot of adventure inside the imaginary game. This book provides a lot of action and drama on both levels.
