The Fish and His Puffy Temper is a children's picture book written by Barbara Pinke, with illustrations by Alvin Adhi. The story follows Puffy, an angry fish trying to make new friends. Unfortunately, the moment he arrives at the sea playground, he gets angry, puffs up, and scares away the other fish. Puffy soon realizes that it is no fun playing alone and becomes sad. Seassy, a seahorse, confronts him about his behavior and discovers why Puffy gets angry and that he is willing to make friends. The unlikely pair decides to find solutions to help Puffy control his anger. They visit different fish that face intense situations daily and learn from them how they stay calm and let go of their anger.

The Fish and His Puffy Temper is a heartwarming and relatable tale that teaches children the importance of self-control and empathy. Young readers will learn that making friends requires understanding and patience. The message is delivered gently and engagingly, making it an excellent read for children to learn about emotional intelligence and social skills. Barbara Pinke uses simple words and a calming tone to narrate the story, making it easy for readers to understand and fitting perfectly with the story's theme. The vibrant and colorful illustrations bring the sea world to life with intricate details that transport readers to an underwater world. The inclusion of small details like underwater plants, bubbles, and other subtle elements adds depth and texture to the art, making the story even more fun to read. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend sharing it with your children or students to teach them to control their emotions.

Poor Puffy! He wants to play with all the other young fish, but every time he tries they are all frightened and swim away. However, one day something remarkable happened: one fish decided to stay and see exactly what Puffy's problem was. The little fish identified the problem and was willing to help Puffy overcome it. The problem didn't go away immediately: Puffy had to learn several lessons and then practice, practice, PRACTICE them! That is an important point that should be reinforced with our children. Don't give up! Keep trying, and you WILL succeed!

If you can stop gazing long enough at the amazingly colorful and beautiful underwater illustrations, you might learn something! This story gives kids the tools to be able to recognize, and eventually control, their emotions. Most importantly, it emphasizes the “if at first you don’t succeed - try, try again” method. It teaches them to learn from their mistakes and don’t give up! Highly recommend!

My second son has a bit of a temper and this was a great read for us to do together. I loved the different ways to help control your anger and so did my son. Having different ways, or tools, at your disposal can be extremely helpful. Just like not everyone can learn the same way, not everyone can react the same either. I would highly recommend this book for anyone needing to talk to their littles about their angry emotions.

I gave the children's picture book, "The Fish and his Puffy Temper," two stars for its potential. However, I strongly recommend against this book. Let me start with the best first.
The first thing I noticed was that this is not a book a child can read alone, as there are some words that might need explaining, such as "queue" instead of "line." Another example is giving the shark the name, Ms. Carcharodon and the crab, Mr. DeCapoda. The first is the genus name of the great white shark, while the second is an order of crustaceans. I wonder if most adults know that fact in order to explain to their children, but a simple internet search will shed some light. This aspect is admirable, encouraging learning in the reader and listener while instigating conversation and interaction between child and caregiver.
Next, though the illustrations are often expressive and cute, I noticed that the illustrations are also quite busy. For some children, this might provide more opportunity to explore as well as hold their attention. However, for children with sensory issues, this could cause overload. (Note: I applaud the illustrator for the clever touch of having the seahorse dad use a baby sling wrap as his pouch, in which he carries a baby seahorse.)
The theme of the story, teaching children methods to handle anger, is a good choice. Here, however, is where things get a little sticky. I feel the emotions were set a bit extreme, with Puffy "blowing up" over the slightest thing, yet this can be over looked as something minor and open to interpretation.
The real problem comes in when three methods of anger management fail to do the job. Mom Fish tells Puffy to put a band on his fin and snap it when he feels angry. This is a controversial method called Aversion Therapy, where an unpleasant or painful stimuli is created when an undesired emotion, thought, or action occurs. The unpleasantness or pain creates a negative association (aversion), causing the person to stop the unwanted behavior. This is a form of self-punishment and encourages self-abuse. As such, I have to encourage adults not to read this book to children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous art work. These illustrations are WOW!!!

The title of the book and it's gorgeous cover illustrations grabbed me. If you're looking for a book to help a child become aware of anger in him or herself, it's great by the way. And even if you're NOT (which is my case) it's a beautiful story of a puffer fish which blows up when he gets mad. Which is plain funny in itself.

Ok did I say that the illustrations are gorgeous!!!

What child doesn’t like blow fish? The illustrations are great and the tools suggested to curb anger are useful. I’ve never seen my son so serious about trying to learn behavior tactics (he struggles with anger and is saddened by it). He revealed this to me in a way he never has while going over this book.
