Sorceress Awakened: A Shadow Lake Novel (Shadow Lake Novels Book 1) Kindle Edition
A life spent in a small-town breeds unspeakable boredom, and with my twenty-seventh birthday just around the corner I want nothing more than to break out of the rut I’ve been in…I guess the old adage is true, be careful what you wish for.
Cue the mysterious stranger who shows up in our town just days before my birthday. Sure, he’s sort of a dick but damn he looks good while he does it. When my birthday hits, he’s who I’m going to need to trust as I watch my entire life go up in flames.
If I ever complain about my life being boring again? Just smack me.

About the author

Kimberly Stanton was born and raised just outside of Los Angeles, in bright and sunny California. If she isn't curled up with a cup of coffee and a book, Kimberly can be found out exploring the Hawaiian coasts with her husband and black labs, Koda and Cerberus. As a voracious reader, Kimberly wanted to create a character in Cassandra that was equal parts sass and badass with a heart of gold. Sorcerer Awakened is Kimberly's first book.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2025A fast paced urban fantasy reminiscent of what I love in contemporary fantasies! This is more of an origin story for our protagonist, Cassandra, as she yearns for more in her small town life, and learns of her powers on her 27th birthday, as well as the supernatural world she suddenly finds herself drawn into.
There’s lots of action, classic mythological creatures, and some romance, and Cassandra is a likeable protagonist. Her familiar is a 150-pound wolf named Koda (also, I want my own Koda!) and she has a tight friend group. This book is under 300 pages, so it’s a fast read.
This is told in first person from Cassandra’s POV throughout.
Ends on a cliffhanger, but this is book 1 of a series and I’m interested to know where it will go next.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2025Stanton delivers an intriguing narrative following Cass who's just discovered the magical realm, and that she's a part of it.
Working with her circle of friends, a new acquaintance Lex and her familiar Koda (my fav character), Cass discovers the world is much bigger than she's ever known and she may play an integral part in it.
Stanton delivers a cozy fantasy read and I'm looking forward to book #2.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2022Sorceress Awakened has a little bit of everything...romance without being the focal point, magic that isn't corny, and just enough action & suspense to make things interesting. Once I started, I didn't want to put it down because I needed to know what was about to happen next. I was a little disappointed at the cliffhanger the book ended with, but only for selfish reasons because I can't wait to see what's next for Cassie. Overall, a quick and easy read to let your mind escape from mundane life.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2024This book is a lighthearted romp through beloved urban fantasy tropes. I could have done with less exposition, and the romance fell a little flat for me, but if you're a fan of vampires/fae/shifters/magic users all in one small town, you'll probably find something to enjoy here.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022A overall thrilling book allowing the reader to get lost in an enchanting world of imagination. The author has created the ability relate to the characters at many levels. This book will keep you aching to know what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2025I liked Koda the familiar and the world building. I am a fan of elemental powers and was excited to see that in this book. I enjoy a FMC who is tough and unique among the supernatural community. Her friends were a close supportive group which was nice. Unfortunately, alot of the book felt repetitive and slow moving. The main character had to repeat everything to everyone all the time and the main conflict didn't really happen as much until the end and even then it was over very quickly. I know it is setting up for the next books though so I am mostly overlooking it. I enjoyed the magic and characters overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic, love and kicking butt!
I thoroughly enjoyed Cass's story, connecting with her on a personal level before we moved into her introduction to magic. Her passion and care for her friends really shone through, and I love that she's kept her humanity - emotions, stresses and all that - throughout despite learning just how powerful she is, really helps you stay connected to her story.
Can't wait to read what happens from here!
