Review

A mother loses her child. A wife flees her husband. Kings die. A child is born. Somewhere in between all of this is love, gifts, secrets, hate, and a semblance of a life. The Adulterer by SJ Snel is a prequel in The Hidden Truths historical fiction saga. Set in the 1180s in Kerak, Jordan, the book tells the story of Aamina, a Muslim in this Christian kingdom. She works as a silk weaver for Lord Reynald de Chatillon, the Lord of Oultrejordain. It is this role that creates the atmosphere for her meeting with her knight in shining armor. What results from that simple encounter is a quagmire that sucks everyone in.

This is an amazing book that is so heart-wrenching that you will be unable to put it down. Be warned, though, as with everything else, the violence is also described in extensive, harrowing detail that might be a bit much for some readers. One of the strong aspects of the book is its short chapters. The way that they are written adds to the suspense and thrill of all that takes place. Because of the atrocities that will shock you and the heartwarming moments that will make you giggle like a schoolgirl, the short chapters allow the reader the time to process each event without being unnecessarily overwhelmed with information and action.

From the beginning until the very last page, this book will have you clutching at your pearls with shock and horror. It is relentless in that wonderful way, so come ready to have your heart put through the wringer as the experiences in the book leave every character forever changed and unable to revert to who they once were; as the story's reader, it is unlikely that you will remain unaffected. A book of experiences that leave every character forever changed and unable to revert to who they once were. Can you finish it unaffected?

I am a writer of historical fiction, with a particular interest in the Medieval period.

The memory of the moment I discovered my passion for writing remains vivid. As a young girl I accompanied my mother to London's Leicester Square to watch Gone with the Wind. The captivating story sparked my imagination. As soon as I got home I found the book on my mother's bookshelf and read it. I was twelve at the time. A tale of love, loyalty, and patriotism immediately made me fall in love with historical fiction.

While doing my law degree, I chose to take a module on the history of the English legal system, which revealed its origins with Feudal barons, the Magna Carta, knights, duty and King John. I couldn't help but be fascinated with this era, and "The Hidden Truths Saga" is set during this time.

Currently, I live and work from my home in Danbury, Essex, where I enjoy spending time with my three incredible sons and DIY-loving husband. I also have a border collie named Rocket and two chubby cats. When I'm not writing, I can be found walking Rocket through the ancient woodland surrounding my home, drawing inspiration for my next novels. Alternatively, I'm out with friends, often heading to London to catch a show while enjoying a glass or two of prosecco!

My aim is to delight my audience with captivating tales, transporting readers into a medieval world filled with diverse relationships and settings. While my stories are based on real events and feature historical figures, I also weave in fictional characters to enhance the narrative. Although some timelines may be altered for storytelling purposes, my main goal is to bring this fascinating era to life for my readers.

Interesting book that delves into Jerusalem during a period of conflict.

    Definitely worth a read

This historical fiction fantasy book was a good, if frustrating, read. Set during the Crusades, this love story was sad and heartbreaking. No matter how hard they try, or how good they try to be, women always get the raw end of the deal.

I enjoyed this book, and would gladly read more in this series. Hopefully in future books, some of the characters have happier endings!

The Crusades and Jerusalem are not my chosen era. I found this book to be lacking in history/development of the characters. I find it implausible that a Christian "king" would employ a Muslim weaver for his most important garments regardless of her skill. There is just something off about that. Make her a salve, sure but not someone trusted with that kind of work and then there's the whole sexual attraction part that if he wanted her he'd have raped her, period. As for the Crusader love affair, again his religious convictions would have totally prevented it from happening. After reading I found out there is a follow-up book that details what happened to some of the characters after the end of this & to be honest I have no interest in it.

This book delves into the culture of Jerusalem during the 1100's in which a silk weaver is brought to weave for the King. In the process, the silk weaver falls in love with someone not of her nationality, religion, or background including that the silk weaver is not honest in telling her love that she is already married.

This book definitely could have used a lot more character development that would have raised the overall rating. I received a free copy of this book via The Niche Reader.

The book was good, but at times the characters were childish. The further I read in the book, the more I felt that Aamina, Nevah and Reynard didn't want to take responsibility for their beliefs and actions and chose to believe that others were at fault. But, ultimately, Nevah's waring to Aamina came true and Aamina paid the ultimate price, only realizing it too late. Nevah surprised me with her actions and good choice at the end of the book.

I thought this book had a unique premise and setting overall in 12th century Jerusalem with the main character of a basket weaver. However, the characters were a bit flat throughout the story and not fully relatable. It was a great idea that fell a bit short for me as a reader.

While the premise was strong, the novel strongly lacked character development. The characters had no depth and their motivations were weak. The dialogue didn’t help- it was repetitive, anachronistic, and juvenile.

this was a strong start to the Hidden Truths Saga series, it uses the historical period in a way that worked overall and I was invested in what was going on. The characters felt like they were supposed to be there and wanted to continue the journey with them. Sj Snel has a strong writing style and I can't wait for more.

This was my first step into historical fiction and it did not disappoint. It was such an enthralling read. The idea it was a story weaved into an accurate historical background made it so vivid. The characters were so real to me and I found myself reading faster to get to the next chapter. Can't wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing in depth discovery of history & defying love

This era of history is not something I knew much about. I’d heard of the Knights Templar and the Crusades but not understood from the Muslim point of view. This novel, with its thorough, in depth research provided an educational back drop for a story of harsh reality & deep love. The authors descriptive & sometimes graphic detail brought me to tears on a few occasions. This first novel and the previous novella, The Redeemer, has left me impatiently waiting for the next in the series.
