- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2014Amateur radio was her new hobby, only going to be used in case of emergency, but little did Frannie know she would meet the man of her dreams over the airwaves! I was very much rooting for Pete to be ’the one’ for her.
With her ex-boyfriend Dave lurking about, and a sudden creepy stalker appearing in her life, things take some twisty turns. Pete has his work cut out for him in trying to keep his new gal safe. Things get a bit scary and Frannie must make a 911 call to the sheriff one night. I happen to have some ’hams’ in my family which was why this story intrigued me. The story is well done, well-written, and flowed nicely; kept me turning the pages. I give this book high marks and very much recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2014Radio Waves to Love is a great, passionate romance novel that left me feeling fantastic! Author McClatchey does a remarkable job crafting high drama and a love triangle unlike any I've read about before.
Meeting 'Mr Right' over the airwaves was a neat twist, but there are several twists in this intelligent, humorous, cleverly plotted novel.
I adore the heroine, Frannie and found myself immediately caring about her trials with Pete and Dave, You'll love the intriguing characters and all the unexpected turn of events in this different and refreshing romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2015Disclaimer - this is NOT the kind of book I would normally select to read. I was pulled into it because of the amateur radio operator (Ham) angle, which turned out to be pretty lame. I have seen other reviewers gush about how neat it was that the story was about a DJ, but I have to wonder what book they read because there were no DJs in this one.
I couldn't find anything to like in this book. The author homed in on Frannie's weight numerous times, even having a Bountiful women's convention in the hotel where Frannie worked, and noting often how each of the men in her life didn't have a problem with her weight. I don't see how driving this home over and over, from many points of view added anything to the story.
The characters were very one-dimensional and the conversations between them did little to grow the characters or give them any depth. Conversations were stilted, unbelievable, and generally did little to further the story line. Situations that occurred were unbelievable. <SPOILER> For example, when Frannie determines that someone has broken into her apartment, did she notify the police, or even tell her boyfriend? Nope, she'll deal with it later.
The characters rarely "said" anything. Almost any type of conversation was written with such flowery adjectives and adverbs that it became totally unbelievable. He gushed , he tittered , she sighed , she giggled, he smirked, she groaned, he laughed, he mumbled, he piped up, she teased, he commented snidely...and on and on. In just the last few sentences, they looked soulfully into each other's eyes, kissed his nose playfully, and smiled demurely. It often felt like the author was just trying to bump the word/page count with the language.
For me, this was basically a waste.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2015anybody that's read any of my reviews will see that I'm not a romantic reader, (unless my wife tells me I should read one that is. Love you baby.) this book falls into the latter. My wife said I would love this book because of unconventional love story and she was right on target. It was not only a great romance but it was a great story. Well written and I look forward to reading more, but only if my wife likes it first.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015Ms McClatchy, I can respect that you have written several books, however, you apparently don't respect your reader's. This book was extremely difficult to read. I found myself trying to rewrite sentences as I read them so that they made sense. As I said in my title, It could have been a good book. Please do yourself a favor and have your books edited before you publish them. This book read as a first run. Sincerely, Patti Johnson
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2016A light-hearted romance targeted mainly for women. Some may term this genre as "chick-lit" but whatever term a reader chose to call it, "Radio Waves To Love" is a fun read. I enjoyed it even though this is not the usual type of genre I go for.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2014"Radio Waves to Love" by Deborah McClatchey is a story that reads like a movie or TV special: it's fast, full of intercuts, amusing, and intelligently plotted. The story revolves around an amateur radio set meant to be used in emergencies only, but Frannie's brother trows the story into gear by convincing her she can use the ham radio to find Mr. Right. Frannie hears the sexy voice of Pete Lake and this story powers up from there. Of course, a real emergency isn't far away, during which Frannie and Pete met face to face. No simple love story, this. The course of true love is complicated by an obsessive admirer of Frannie's, from whom Pete may need to rescue her, and her ex-boyfriend Dave, who returns at just the wrong time.
Enjoy Frannie's adventures on the radio and off. I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015I bought the book based on all of the high ratings. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble agreeing. The author bounces back and forth with different points of view without clear breaks in the narrative. it is very easy for the reader to get confused. Also, the dialogue is very choppy and simplistic, and because of that seems very unrealistic and almost childish.
I also wish that more had been done to establish a relationship between Fran and Pete over the radio. The couple of brief conversations weren't very believable and didn't make the reader believe they were falling for one another.
This book has the strong feel of an Amazon self-published book. An editor with an honest opinion that is not friends with the author would've been very useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has restored my faith in romance!
I’ve been attempting to diversify my selection of reading material, and I’ll be the first to admit that chick-lit isn’t normally my first choice of genre, yet I thoroughly enjoyed this tale.
(Is this chick-lit, by the way? I’ve really no idea)
I’ve tried a few romance-type books, and for the most part the love scenes leave me cold. The guy always has deep blue/green eyes, an incredible six-pack, muscular chest and shoulders (without even ever going to the gym) and the obligatory impressive ‘length.’ I end up skipping over the pages.
Not so with Deborah McClatchy, whose writing is both skilful and absorbing. She intelligently builds her sub-plots around the main storyline which is admittedly the courtship between Frannie and Pete, and the hobby which first brings them together, they’re both radio Hams.
“♪♫ Ah, breaker one-nine, this here's the Rubber Duck. You gotta copy on me, Pig Pen, c'mon? ♪♫
♪♫ Ah, yeah, 10-4, Pig Pen, fer shure, fer shure. By golly, it's clean clear to Flag Town, c'mon ♪♫”
Now I’m English, and this is all new stuff to me, in fact the idea of being allowed to take radio calls whilst you’re driving a car or a truck is a little strange, but through watching American TV dramas where they use their mobile phone in the car I can only assume that this isn’t against the law in the States.
So we’ve got the radio Hams, Frannie and Pete’s love affair and one more element that is brilliantly written into the plot, that of the completely irrational, mentally unstable and very dangerous stalker. I’ve long believed that it’s entirely possible to function in the world; to hold a responsible position industry, even to keep a marriage together, and yet be completely barmy! And McClatchy characterizes this psychotic component of the human mind with skill, making for a very readable tale.
I’m not the kind of guy who snuggles up in front of the fire with a good book on a winter’s afternoon, but if I was ‘Radio Waves to Love’ would be my choice of material. It’s a cracking read!
Deborah McClatchy has restored my faith in romance.
