About the author

The author is a scientist on the faculty of the University of California and a big fan of California mystery novels. He taught a popular Freshman Seminar on California Mystery novels for several years at U.C. Davis. A quick search of Amazon will turn up more than just the Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series authored by Jerry. You'll also find several technical books and articles in biochemistry previously edited or authored by him. The fourteen novels in his Roger Bowman-Suzanne Foster Series are all available as Kindle e-books. Eleven of the novels are also currently available from Amazon in paperback versions. A novel-length anthology of short stories entitled Five Quickies For Roger And Suzanne and an Omnibus Volume Science Can Be Murder, as well as four shorter novellas, are also available on Amazon. All of the books feature Roger, Suzanne, and various other recurring characters from the series, and are available for free downloads from Kindle Unlimited. The books are all standalones, which can be read in any order. Reader feedback for all of these books is appreciated, so please take a few minutes to write a book review after you finish reading any of these stories.
Jerry has loved reading mystery novels, especially the P.I. genre based in California, all his life. He started writing mysteries several years ago when his wife Elaine suggested he needed to have something to do when he retired.
The settings and locales for all of the Latin American mystery novels, The Ambivalent Corpse; The Surreal Killer; The Matador Murders; Rum, Cigars, and Corpses; and The Origin of Murder are authentic; the author lived previously in Salta, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay for several months each, and selected several of the most interesting locations he found for Roger and Suzanne to visit. The Ambivalent Corpse takes place in Montevideo and several of the countries surrounding Uruguay. The Surreal Killer visits Northern Chile's Atacama Desert and Peru. The Matador Murders revisits Montevideo and also visits Santiago, Chile, where the author has been several times for collaborative research and teaching. The Origin of Murder takes place in the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean 600 miles west of Ecuador, with brief stops in Quito and Mexico's Sonora Desert, while Rum, Cigars, and Corpses is set in contemporary Cuba. The novelette The Body in the Bed (Montevideo) and two of the Five Quickies, The Empanada Affair (Salta, Argentina) and The Haunted Gymnasium (Fortaleza, Brazil) also feature South American locales.
Jerry and wife Elaine live in Northern California, where Elaine breeds prize-winning German Shorthaired Pointers who have served as the inspiration for Juliet and Romeo in The Deadly Dog Show, Hunter Down, Abra Cadaver, Roger and the Cancelled Czech, and Dangerous Drugs and Dexterous Dogs. - Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2025A good addition to the series. The story is easy to follow, with enough mystery to keep things interesting. Fans will enjoy where it takes the characters next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2025Excellent addition to one of my favorite series. I particularly enjoyed this one as I lived in Spain for four years when I was in my late 20s and this brought back many memories. As always, excellent characterization and very accurate, detailed background.
