Review

Renowned World War II historian, BRUCE BOLINGER, has included TRAIN Z in his list of ESCAPE AND INVASION BOOKSon his website.

Professor IAN F. HANCOCK, Ph.D., linguist, and Romani scholar has included TRAIN Z in the ROMANI ARCHIVES.

I enjoyed reading this historical-fiction narrative about the harrowing trek of a loving Roma (Gypsy) husband and wife. The book's main theme is its portrayal of heroes and heroines of the Resistance who fought bravely, many sacrificing their lives.

I love historical fiction and this compelling story takes you on a journey with a young Romani (gypsy) couple in Belgium during World War II. Did not want their story to end. Would make a gripping edge of your seat movie. Highly recommend.

This suspenseful thriller is so skillfully crafted that I found it hard to put down. Every line in the story contributes to advance the swiftly moving story. It is a faithful representation of the secret army's successful role in defying the Nazi aggressors in providing crucial help to the Allies.

It's a wonderful book. An aspect of history that we think we know (but there's more) with compelling characters and an exciting and complex plot.

About the Author

In 2013, I saw a program about the well-guarded 20th train from the Nazi's Mechelen Transit Camp in Brussels to Auschwitz. It was stopped by three Belgian resistance members who helped seventeen Jewish prisoners escape. That program sent me on a quest to research and write a story about Train Z, the only one of 28 trains from the Mechelen Transit Camp to have Romani prisoners onboard. I also wanted to salute the Belgian resistance and the Roma in this book who fought for freedom during World War II.

A perilous journey during Nazi occupation

A perilous journey during Nazi occupation
I enjoyed reading this historical-fiction narrative about the harrowing trek of a loving Roma (Gypsy) husband and wife from Yugoslavia who find themselves arrested in German-occupied Belgium during WWII and must find their way home. I would recommend this book particularly for young readers, as it is written in an informative matter, with explanations for terms and activities not common today. While the two protagonists are fictional, their journey places them in actual historical places and events behind German lines during the War. The author obviously spent an exhaustive time researching, as evidenced by the substantial bibliography and notes at the end. And the reader will doubtless find these sources invaluable for further reading. The book’s main theme is its portrayal of heroes and heroines of the Resistance who fought bravely, many sacrificing their lives, in the enormous effort of saving the lives of Jews and Roma (gypsies) from the Nazi horrors. This is an important subject, and this book does immerse the reader in the heart of that noble cause.

This book captures the timeframe beautifully and it also allows you to really fall in love with the characters and you get a feeling you are experiencing the fright that the couple shares as they are caught in the grasp of the horrible Nazi occupation. I am sure there are 1,000 of stories just like this. I felt like I was reading/watching a Netflix mini series. Great job, David.

During 1944, when young Roma couple Saban and Elsaveta leave Sarajevo to attend a family funeral in Brussels, they are captured and sent to a Nazi transfer camp in Belgium. Since they are Gypsies, a derogatory term for the Roma people, they are held in disfavor along with Jews by their Nazi captors and put on a train bound for Auschwitz concentration camp. in a suspenseful drama they must rely on Belgian resistance fighters and join their struggle in order to escape certain death.

David D. Bommarito’s suspenseful thriller is so skillfully crafted that I found it hard to put down. Every line in the story contributes to advance the swiftly moving story. Based on ten years’ research into actual members of the Belgian resistance fighters, this fictional account of the courage, determination and defiance of these Roma warriors rings true. It is a faithful representation of this secret army’s successful role in defying the Nazi aggressors in providing crucial help to the allies in their efforts to push back Germany’s aggression in Northern Europe.
