Widow and retired realtor, Rose Fairchild, is gifted with a sixth sense. Moving from Long Island to a community in South Carolina, Rose is reluctant to leave the house she shared with her husband Harvey and her cat Moxie before they died, but a strange vision of a disappearing kitten on the community’s website intrigues her.

When Rose arrives in the Meadows Lake community, she meets two singles her age: Grant, a real estate agent and widower, and Blake, the divorced Fallsview sheriff. She also meets the orange cat of her vision who introduces herself as Soup and claims to be sent by Rose’s husband as a guide for her new life.

Soon after, a murder takes place at the clubhouse. The victim is the restaurant cook who wasn’t well liked, and Rose becomes involved in the sheriff’s investigation, only to receive a written threat to stop snooping around. Will her visions help her solve the case... or will she need help from her supernatural kitten?

My name is Debbie De Louise. I’m a retired reference librarian from a public library on Long Island and the award-winning author of the Cobble Cove and Buttercup Bend cozy mystery series. I've also published standalone novels of various genres, a non-fiction cat book, and a collection of cat poems.

My first novel, a paranormal romance, CLOUDY RAINBOW, was written after my beloved cat, Floppy, died from diabetic and liver complications. The book was dedicated to him, and he is featured as a character in it. Previously self-published, it was reprinted by my publisher with fresh edits, a new cover, and a few updates.

My second novel, the first book of the Cobble Cove mystery series, A STONE'S THROW, is the story of a widowed librarian who visits her husband's hometown and finds a new love with the town's newspaper publisher but also discovers some alarming truths about her husband's death and its connection to the publisher and his family. The other books in my Cobble Cove series include BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, WRITTEN IN STONE, LOVE ON THE ROCKS, AND NO GRAVESTONE UNTURNED.

The Cobble Cove Stories, previously published as eBooks, include SNEAKY'S CHRISTMAS MYSTERY (winner of the Cat Writers' Association's Muse Medallion award), SNEAKY'S SUMMER MYSTERY, and KITTYKAI'S EASTER MYSTERY, are now included in a print edition along with a new story. The collection is called SNEAKY'S SUPERNATURAL MYSTERY AND OTHER COBBLE COVE STORIES.

My second cozy mystery series, The Buttercup Bend cozy mysteries, feature Cathy Carter who co-owns a pet rescue and animal cemetery in the small town of Buttercup Bend in the Catskills. In addition to her pet business, Cathy is also a photographer for the town’s newspaper, THE BUTTERCUP BUGLE, Her adventures include THE CASE OF THE CAT CRAZY LADY, THE CASE OF THE PARROT LOVING PROFESSOR, THE CASE OF THE LLAMA RAISING LIBRARIAN, THE CASE OF THE WHALE WATCHING WEDDING PLANNER and THE CASE OF THE REPTILE RESCUING RECEPTIONIST..

I've also published three standalone mysteries, REASON TO DIE, SEA SCOPE, and MEMORY MAKERS. My time-travel novel, TIME'S RELATIVE, won the Muse Medallion from the Cat Writers' Association. My non-fiction cat book, MEMORIES AND MEOWS, features full-color photos of my cats and is told from their points of view about feline health and behavior issues. MEOWS AND PURRS is my collection of cat poetry based on my current and past cats. It includes photos and notes about what inspired me to write the poems. My latest book, A MIXED BAG OF CAT TAILS, is a multi-genre collection featuring short stories that include cats.

I’m a member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters-in-Crime, the Cat Writers' Association, the South Carolina Writer's Association, and the North Carolina Writers Network and have published articles in Cats Magazine and Catnip (Tufts University Veterinary Newsletter). I won the Glamour Puss special award from Hartz Corporation for my Catstercom article, “Brushing your cat for bonding, beauty, and better health.” My short mystery, “Stitches in Time” was published in the CAT CRIMES THROUGH TIME Anthology. My poems are featured in the NASSAU COUNTY VOICES IN VERSE and the BARDS ANNUAL anthologies. I recently moved to South Carolina with my husband, Anthony; daughter, Holly; and our cats, Harry, and Hermione. We added a new kitten, Soup, to our household in September 2024. She's featured in my upoming mystery that will be the first of a new series.

This cozy mystery opens with a convincing account of the struggle faced by Rose as she copes with loss of her husband and cat and pressure to move to South Carolina. A reincarnated cat with teleportation and speech abilities makes for an engaging character. The mystery murder has several possible perpetrators, and the characters have some depth. Unfortunately, there are bumps along the road of this tale. Several events in the normal human realm are unbelievable (police procedure, having a cat in a restaurant and grocery store, golf club issues, moving to an empty house, giving a girlfriend your dead wife's clothes, a car is delivered without an appointment, and forgetting cat litter. Repetitions are another bump that threw this reader out of the story (the thrill of a man's touch, a bobbing ponytail, grocery bags, tuna cat food, even telling something twice to the same character). The third bumps for me were plot glitches: Rose knows a disturbance is a murder before being told, a character arrives with bouncing curls and cleavage, but she's wearing a sweatshirt, one moves into Meadows Lake community and is surprised by a lake. There's a good cat story here but be prepared for bumps.

"Murder at Meadows Lake Clubhouse" is the first book in the new paranormal cozy "Soup the Supernatural Kitten Mysteries" by veteran (and one of my all-time favorites) author Debbie De Louise. The plot features a recent widow who relocates to an over-55 community in South Carolina and the unusually gifted kitten she discovers in her brand-new home. Convinced to sell the home she shared for more than 30 years with her husband Harvey, Rose Fairchild decides to make a fresh start in a new setting and moves to Meadows Lake, South Carolina. But on her first full day in her new home, she is greeted by the news that there has been a murder in the community’s clubhouse: the victim being the head cook at the restaurant there. She is equally surprised when her new acquaintance, the local sheriff, asks her to accompany him on his rounds to question potential suspects. However, neither of those surprises tops the moment when she discovers her new kitten, Soup, has supernatural abilities and is able to talk!

Rose Fairchild is a sweet woman in her sixties, and while still deeply grieving her recently departed spouse, she is otherwise quite unflappable in the face of numerous shocking revelations. She is a kind and thoughtful person and quickly attracts the attention of two of Meadows Lake’s most eligible bachelors, real estate agent Grant Davis and Sheriff Blake Conor. Both are gentlemanly but have pleasant plans to spend time getting to know Rose. It’s going to be a tough choice for her in the future.

I liked the paranormal aspects of the story, as well as Soup’s fun personality, focus on meals, her ability to talk to Rose as well as animals, and her telepathic ability. Not only do they find comfort with one another, but they also make a pretty good team when it comes to getting answers.

The plot hits the ground running, with the murder occurring early in the story. Because the victim was universally disliked, there are several good suspects to cross off the investigative list. I enjoyed the story but thought the premise of the sheriff inviting Rose and Grant into the crime scene to view the body of the victim and for her to join the investigation shockingly implausible. But with one of the main characters being a resurrected, talking cat, how can one even start to draw a line for what’s plausible or not? Readers should be prepared to suspend their belief in reality, trust the process, and have fun.

I recommend MURDER AT MEADOWS LAKE CLUBHOUSE to cozy mystery readers, especially those who enjoy more mature main characters, amateur sleuths, and cat-centered stories.

This was remarkably engaging. Very well written.
With the current state of the world, it's hard to find something to hold my attention in a happy way, and this first of a new series did exactly that!
I'm looking forward to a hopefully long series.
I especially loved the cat named Soup.
