BIOGRAPHY

A.C. Ward is a little worried that her internet search history is on some sort of watch list. For the Abyss trilogy, she researched demonic rituals, exorcism, and lethal stab wounds. Her next work in process is only making it worse.

A.C. lives with her husband, daughter, and various pets – dog, cat, gecko, fish, and tarantula. When she’s not writing she’s watching Netflix or rereading her favorite manga. She’d love to hear from her fans. You can contact her at wardabooks@gmail.com. You can also follow her at A.C.Ward on Instagram and Facebook.

Amanda Ward Interview On 02, Jul 2021

"Author of multiple YA fantasy novels, A.C. Ward loves making up stories. She wrote a short story to cheer up her teacher who was depressed about turning 25. It wasn't until she turned 30 that she picked up writing again. She loves to read. She enjoys kicking others forward toward their goals."
What’s your happiest memory from childhood?

My English teacher in 9th grade was on the young side and I overheard her telling another teacher that she was depressed about turning 25. To her it seemed like the end of her youth, and a push into adulthood. I ended up writing a short story for her to cheer her up. It took so much gumption to actually give it to her, but when I did she was so moved. That was when I fully understood the power of storytelling.

What was your biggest dream as a child? Did it ever come true?

I wanted to leave everything behind and run off to New York and be a starving artist. There was something so artsy about it. But I had a free ride to college, and gave in to that instead. It wasn't until I turned 30 that I picked up writing again, and I feel that I am living my dream now (though without the starving part).

Who all are a part of your family? How critical are they of your writing?

My husband, daughter, and mother-in-law are my family. They are all excited by my writing, with my mother-in-law as my biggest supporter. My daughter is only 5, so more of a hindrance than a help. And my husband is probably most critical, as I don't write what he likes to read.

Have you ever read a book that changed your life? What book was it and what about it made you feel that way?

I haven't had this experience. I love to read, and I feel that books are an escape of life, and bring so many emotions, but then I return to the real world until I pick up the next.

What are the fantasy things that you still believe until now even though you've told yourself that it’s just a fantasy?

I fully believe in precognition. The women in my family often dream of something before it happens. I think that deja vu is proof that people can see into the future.

Did you plan all the books in the "A Samurai Fantasy" series in advance?

The first book had been on my mind for quite a while, especially the first scene. I am a planner, but only one book at a time. The characters like to move on their own at times, and this lets them tweak the story. For instance, in book 2, I hadn't planned on Katashi making any moves on Shou. He just couldn't resist.

If you put a knight and a samurai in a fight, who would win?

A samurai, definitely. Until a shinobi sneaks up on them both.

What inspired the plot of your novel, Sword of Compassion?

I love manga and anime, so those stories tend to stick with me longest. And then my subconscious twists all the thoughts around and the stories I write come from my dreams.

What do you carry every day in your pockets/purse you can't leave the house without?

Eye drops. I don't sleep much, and often I need them when my eyes get tired.

What tips do you have for making great pasta?

It's all about the sauce. I let my sauce simmer all day. Though I can't resist eating it that night, it's actually best after you freeze it and thaw it later.

How long can you swim?

I am not the best swimmer. I love the water, but I almost drowned before learning to swim, and it shook me up. So I like to keep my head above water while doing laps, and tend to go quite slow.

How do manage your pets – dog, cat, gecko, fish, and tarantula altogether?

Luckily a lot of them don't take much time to care for. The cat and dog fight over my attention, but the dog always wins. I love animals, and consider them part of the family.

Which was the last show you watched on Netflix?

I'm currently watching Lucifer. I don't tend to binge, as I don't have that much free time, so we've been watching a few episodes every week. Mazikeen is my favorite.

How many plot ideas are just waiting to be written? Can you tell us about one?

I have limitless ideas. So many random things can inspire a scene. I've been toying with ideas about the afterlife. One idea is from the perspective of the ghost that enters another girl's body. The ghost wants so badly to live, while the girl is over how hard her life is already. They have to work together to find the ghost's killer.

How long have you been with AllAuthor now and how have you been enjoying it?

I signed up for AllAuthor quite a while back, but upgraded this year. There are so many tools I love to use, and it's one of the easiest sites. My author friend, Armand Rosamilia, recommended it, and I haven't been disappointed.
