BIOGRAPHY

Christian Fantasy is my favorite genre as both a writer and a reader. There are enough graphic books and movies out there already, so I thought I’d do something different and write a wholesome series that families could enjoy together. You know, like stories and movies used to be.

Clean doesn’t have to mean dumbed-down or over-simplified, and Christian doesn’t have to mean “preachy”. My stories are layered with meaning and real three-dimensional characters that people can connect with and relate to. They love, they laugh, they struggle, and sometimes they fail, but they always get back up to try again…just like we do. I’ve put a lot of effort and research into making their world feel just as real as they are. Fair warning, though. Once you go there, you might not be eager to leave again.

If you haven’t read my series yet, I hope you’ll try it out. The very first book, Journey to Aviad, is free everywhere in ebook format.

      • They have changed it immensely, both for writers and readers! E-books are convenient and affordable, which makes books more accessible to just about everyone. E-reader technology and the ability to self-publish have also given writers opportunities to share their stories with people all over the world. As the publishing industry has gotten more profit focused (and political, too) e-books and print on demand services have given everyone the freedom to publish, and read, whatever they want, regardless of whether or not a publisher has deemed it mass-marketable. The "stigma" of self-publishing is quickly diminishing as readers continue to discover how many amazing indie authors there are. And successful indie authors are in no hurry to give control of their works over to a publisher. Excellence tends to prevail, and that's a win for both readers and writers.

      • I would choose historical fiction, because I love history--especially the personal, every day life kind. Even though I write fantasy, I do lots of historical research on the medieval period to make my world feel rich and authentic. There is lots of inspiration to be found in the past. Sometimes when I need ideas, that's the perfect place to jump start my imagination,

      • Not specific circumstances or people--I keep fiction and reality separate as much as possible! However, I do draw on my thoughts and emotional experiences, using them to make my characters real.

      • Yes! I absolutely read book reviews, and I appreciate them all. Good ones are so encouraging--sometimes I go back and read them again when I'm feeling down about my writing progress or when I'm experiencing those inevitable moments of doubt. They also tell me what I'm doing right, so that I can keep delivering what my readers like most as I continue the series.

Bad reviews are never fun, but on the rare occasions that I get one, I take it with a grain of salt. I ask myself, is their gripe valid? Have they noticed a failing in my writing that I can improve on? Sometimes that's the case and I take their criticism as an opportunity to grow. No one is perfect! On the other hand, sometimes my book (or genre) just isn't their taste, and that's OK too. I can't, and won't try, to please everyone--we all know that never ends well. Believe it or not, some of the negative reviews are encouraging too, like when a reviewer complains that there are Christian themes in my books. Considering that I advertise them as Christian Fantasy, that negative review tells me I must be doing something right. :)

      • The hardest part is not knowing if I've really succeeded in writing from an authentic male perspective, or if I'm writing what a woman thinks a man's perspective is, or should be. Have I romanticized him too much? Or erred in the other direction and made him too gruff and emotionally stunted? I strive to make sure that no matter what their personalities and backgrounds are, that the humanity of my male characters shows through. That's something we all have in common, male and female alike. Just to be sure I've done them justice though, I always seek feedback from male friends and beta readers before I publish.

      • Once I published my first book, I wasn't just writing for myself anymore, but for a growing group of readers I didn't even know. It was kind of humbling, really, and motivating. It still took me a long time to get out that next book--longer than I wanted. Partly that was because of my life circumstances at the time, but partly because I wanted to make sure I was producing the best piece of writing I could. I had worked hard to gain the trust of those first readers--I didn't want to blow that with a disappointing second book.

      • Taking the time to develop real, three-dimensional, relatable characters is crucial. If readers don't care about the characters, it doesn't matter how engaging the plot is. A good story also has layers of meaning, so that you can read the same book more than once and catch different things each time. For me, the best stories have an element of beauty and hope, but also plenty of mystery and suspense. I want to be moved by a story without being traumatized by it!
