      • I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a writer. When I was in high school, I always kept a journal and loved to write poetry. This helped me process emotions and feelings that I had as a teenager. I served as Student Council secretary, so taking notes and sharing information became second nature to me.

One moment in my AP English class in high school has always stuck out in my memories. After turning in an assignment, I told my teacher I wanted to be a writer. Her response was that I would never be a professional writer. I don't know if those words pushed me to work harder and hone my craft, but I certainly did not meet her expectations. I went on to major in Mass Communication-Broadcast and worked in radio news for more than a decade before moving into freelance writing for local magazines and online publications. I also taught ELAR, media, and yearbook to junior high students for seven years before resigning to write my first book and freelance full-time.

I have always loved to write and constantly strive to learn more and improve my skills. I think it is important to become a life-long learner, and I cannot wait to see what my professional career has in store for me in the future. And, I still keep a journal to jot down important life events.

      • I am so excited to say that I have written a book published by Ulysses Press! The entire process of signing the contract, researching, writing, editing, publishing, and marketing "The Little Book of Hermetic Principles: Heal Your Energy, Seek Enlightenment, and Deepen Your Understanding of Your Mind, Body, and Spirit" was awesome!

I do not think publishing my first book changed my writing process, but I learned more about the innerworkings of the actual publishing process. Once the contract to write the book was signed by both parties, I developed an outline that included what I planned to write for each chapter. Once approved by the publisher, I continued my research over the subject by reading some of Hermes Trismegistus' translated works and "The Kybalion." I also began to contact experts to interview for certain sections of the book. Interviewing has always been a strong skill for me. During the interviewing process, make sure you have a list of questions and then actually listen to the answers. Sometimes, the interview can move into a direction you did not consider, and follow-up questions are necessary.

There were only a couple of tweaks to the outline I had initially planned for the book. Once the book was written, it went to an editor and then back to me for review. The edited book was then reviewed by another editor and back to me for proofing. I asked to have one final review before publication, so I was able to see the final copy before it was printed.

The book was initially to be published in January 2022, but the date was pushed to March 1, 2022. That gave me a little more time to market the book. I did learn that marketing and publicity needs to start months in advance to get the word out about the new book. I am still learning how to publicize and market "The Little Book of Hermetic Principles," but I know the information will reach the right people at the right time.

      • I am a procrastinator. I have always been a procrastinator. If I had one tip for an aspiring writer, it would be to do it now! It is okay to take a break to refocus, but we should not put off until tomorrow what we know we should be doing today. I am still learning that process, but I am getting a little better at it.

I write lists to keep track of tasks I need to accomplish, and I strike through the task once it is completed. This makes me feel like I accomplished what I set out to do, and things actually get done!

I have found that when I do not do what my brain is telling me I need to do at that moment, sometimes, I actually miss opportunities. Listen to your intuition. If you get a feeling that you need to update your website, write it on your list and get it done! If you feel like you should stop watching that show you DVR'd and write the article you have been putting off, turn off the TV and write. Do not delay because you might miss an opportunity.
