Barbara R. Harrison Interview On 18, Apr 2019

"Barbara R. Harrison has been writing since she was a teen in the ’50s. She loved books like Heidi, The Secret Garden, Little Women, and the Bobbsey Twins. She writes in many genres and Lost Souls of Greye House is the only book she has written that delves into romance. She writes best when she is alone without distractions. Everything she writes seems to have a little bit of her in it. She writes best in the morning.
Her next book is about ten people who will have their lives transformed as they come together for a vacation in Italy."
Tell us a little about your background and some lesser known facts about yourself.

I’m probably older than most of the authors you interview and, although I’ve been writing since I was a teen in the 50’s, I only got serious about ten years ago. I grew up in Sebring, Ohio, a village of about 4,500 people, and moved to California just before my 21st birthday. I married, had two daughters, and now have two grown grandchildren and a precocious 7-year-old great granddaughter. I’ve been immersed in “new thought” philosophy since 1960, and much of my writing contains at least a bit of that philosophy. I have also explored the psychic realm, and my paranormal pieces often stem from personal experience.

What type of books did you read during childhood? Has your taste changed since you started pursuing a writing career?

I loved books like Heidi, The Secret Garden, Little Women, and the Bobbsey Twins. Books about animals were also favorites - The Black Stallion, Big Red, etc. Strangely enough, I don’t write anything like that. I concentrate on strong female characters and people who need/want to change their lives. My next book is about ten people who will have their lives transformed as they come together for a vacation in Italy.

What is it about the paranormal romance genre that originally captivated you? What, according to you, makes a really good romance?

I write in many genres and Lost Souls of Greye House is the only book I’ve written that delves into romance. Interestingly, I don’t read romance novels, although I was greatly absorbed in them as a younger woman. A “good”romance, to me, is one where both parties are sensible adults who seek to give as much to a relationship as they take from it.

Do you prefer to write alone and in a quiet atmosphere? Or in public with a lot of background "white" noise?

I write best when I’m alone without distractions.

How long do you plan to stick to writing? If you had to choose any other career, what would you pick and why?

I’ve had several careers already. My last job, after abandoning a successful real estate career, was as an event planner and fund raiser for the March of Dimes. It was my way of giving back to the Universe in gratitude for a good life. Now, I plan to write forever.

How did you begin writing your book, "The First Lesson?" How do you think the book has helped your readers to use positive thinking in their own life to pursue their goals and dreams?

I wanted to teach metaphysical principles in a way that would help people understand them without sounding like a preacher. Most people grow up with their parents’ philosophy of life and religion, and never explore other ways of thinking. I hoped to let people know it is okay to question everything.

Lost Souls of Greye House is a fun and interesting read. How did you blend romance and mystery together in the story?

I chose two main characters, who could work together to solve an intriguing mystery despite their differences. Laura is a psychic, and Greye is a non-believer.

Were the characters in The First Lesson inspired by anybody you know? Or perhaps a celebrity?

Everything I write seems to have a little bit of me in it. Paxton Michaels life has a LOT of me in it.

What sparked the idea for "Lost Souls of Greye House?" Who inspired the character of Laura O’Brien?

I stayed with a friend in a rented vacation house in Cambria, California, for a week. The owner provided a guest book for guests to write about their stay there. While reading through remarks by former guests, I discovered several entries describing a ghostly apparition and noted that the ones who had seen it had only been men. I wondered about the story behind it, and decided to make up my own. I have had many psychic experiences myself, so Laura’s character is based on a lot of those experiences.

We’ve just started a new year and I’ve seen lots of posts about new years’ resolutions. Do you have anything special that you’ll be focusing on this year?

I have two more books in the works, and I’ve been encouraged to write a series based on the various characters readers have met in Lost Souls.

If you could choose two characters from any of your books to invite for a dinner party, who would they be and why?

I think I’d like to invite Claire (Greye’s mother in Lost Souls) because she makes me laugh, and David, (First Lesson) because I’ve always wanted to converse with an angel.

How do you feel about the rise in digital books in recent years?

Personally, I like to hold a book in my hand and have the ability to underline passages I love, but I understand why people love their Kindles. I’ve sold more ebooks than hard copies, so I’m okay with that.

When are you most inspired to write? What are some things you do to motivate yourself when you're stuck in a rut?

I write best in the morning. I am involved with a critique group with four other writers, and I have to have at least one chapter written every week. They keep me on track and point out how I can improve what I write.

How many plot ideas are just waiting to be written? Can you tell us about one?

I have an idea for a book about a not-so-nice talk show host (another strong woman) who gets involved with solving a murder that she inspired. No romance in this one. No paranormal either.

When did you first find out about AllAuthor? How would you rate your experience with us so far?
