Bernie is an Iowa farm girl transplanted to Raleigh, North Carolina. When she isn’t writing, reading, or watching British Netflix series like Father Brown and Monroe, she sews. Recent creations include silly stuffed monkeys and sparkly mermaid costumes for her incomparably cute and clever granddaughters. She plays the harmonica without much success. Her husband Ken hikes the greenways taking nature photographs. Together, they enjoy travel— having been to Amsterdam last summer and hoping to take a Great Lakes cruise this summer. They will eat dinner out at the slightest excuse, are often seen at local writer events, and enjoy the variety of theater and music the Triangle offers, especially anything that includes tunes from the fifties and sixties.



Bernie’s Iowa childhood, her travels in the States and Europe, and her contemporary life in Raleigh influence her short stories and essays. She isn’t sure where the urge to write ghost stories comes from. Their source is a mystery. Very recently one of Bernie’s dreams came true when she was offered a publishing contract from Moonshine Cove Publishing for her debut novel, I Never Told You. Other writing dreams include publishing a collection of ghost stories, completing a humorous novel about travel adventures and misadventures, and creating a novella about a character she deleted from I Never Told You.



Bernie has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. One of her stories was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and another one will appear in an anthology of contest winners by Grateful Steps Publishing. She is a writer-in-residence at the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities and a member of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association.
